Photography was an escape for me. I had a pretty poor and tough family life growing up—alcoholism, drug addiction, prison—that I had to get away from. Almost anyone can get a camera these days and, if you’re talented, you can get pretty far with just a camera... photography helped me get away.
My grandpa’s life was totally different; he was a photographer in Maine/Massachusetts, had gone to work with Native Americans as a teacher and photographed them, as well. He always carried a camera when he came around and he showed me how to use them. When I turned eighteen, he basically said, “Get it together because you’re gonna be a photographer.”
