Hands-On Review: Samsung EVO microSDXC Cards

2Share

If you have been around digital things long enough, you know that not all data storage is equal. Although memory cards might look the same, you’ll see a range of prices and specs from card to card. And, when it comes to storing your valuable images, you don’t really want to take chances—you need to trust your brand of memory card. Samsung has released the latest versions of its EVO Plus UHS-I microSDXC memory cards, featuring more storage and more speed than the previous EVO lineup.

The latest EVOs come in four flavors, with the EVO Plus UHS-I microSDXC Memory Card with SD Adapter available in 64GB, 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB storage options. All four cards feature read speeds up to 130 MB/s and a minimum write speed of 30 MB/s with UHS-I, V30, and U3 class ratings. These speeds/ratings show the cards’ ability to record Ultra HD 4K and Full HD video, as well as large raw and JPEG images in either their naked microSDXC format or as SD cards with the included adapter.

An SD adapter is included with each Samsung EVO Plus microSDXC card.

These are robustly manufactured cards that are designed to survive saltwater immersion for up to 72 hours, extreme temperatures (-13°-185°F), airport X-rays, drops from higher than 16', 10,000 swipes, and magnetism up to 15,000 gauss―in the event you accidently bring your EVO Plus cards into your next MRI session or come into contact with someone with an extreme magnetic personality. The cards are also covered by a 10-year limited warranty for added peace of mind.

I don’t think I am the only photographer who tries not to buy ugly memory cards, and the new Samsung EVO Plus cards pass my fashion-forward scrutiny. The company has updated the EVO Plus appearance with a clean white finish and crisp gray-and-blue text. The white finish, intentionally or not, makes the cards easier to see than other (usually black) cards when scattered on my not-so-clean desk—an added benefit when cleaning/organizing, looking for loose cards in your camera bag, or trying to grab some “film” quickly while rushing out the door.

Great specs, rugged design, good looking, and a great warranty—what else are you looking for in a memory card? Tell us in the Comments section.
