Quiet announcements appear to be the calm before the storm, with new releases scheduled for next week.
Week of April 30, 2023
Last month was loaded with a great deal of product news, thanks to NAB and many top brands getting in on the fun. By contrast, this week may feel somewhat dull. But one thing we want to touch on briefly is the trend of virtual production. We also have a new product to talk about—a revised Peak Design Everyday Backpack made in collaboration with Logitech G, for gamers.
That may be all for concrete news but, while we don't yet have details to share, Nikon and Sony announced that they will be revealing new products next week. Nikon is asking "are you ready?" for what is presumably something substantial, and Sony's XPERIA smartphone division is saying "the next ONE is coming."
Virtual production stole the NAB show
New, fun products are on display at NAB every year, but this year the defining demo was often the displays themselves. Virtual production is rapidly becoming a fixture of the TV and filmmaking industry because it allows for a much more immersive shooting environment—even when the locations themselves aren't real.
Nearly everyone had a virtual production stage on display, including B&H. If you haven't seen them yet, we have a nice primer on LED volume stages, but the gist of it is that instead of traditional green screens, productions are now using large displays to provide a real-time feed of a chosen location on set. Your studios can now be anywhere you want them to be, without traveling to a location.
By integrating video game engines, video productions can even connect the camera's position to the virtual space and have the background image adjust in real time to create an incredibly realistic move. This can make post-production much easier, and it creates a much more immersive scene for the actors to play against. It is a serious improvement over green screens and adoption is quick.
If you want to see more volume walls in action, you should check the B&H YouTube Channel this Sunday. We will be publishing a video highlighting our display at NAB and discussing the tech itself.
Peak Design x Logitech G modify the Everyday Backpack for gamers
Peak Design is well known for making great technical bags, mainly for cameras. Logitech G has been well known for making great gaming tools and accessories. Now, Peak Design and Logitech G have joined forces to create a bespoke backpack for games and tech enthusiasts: the Peak Design x Logitech G Everyday Backpack Zip.
From the outside, the Everyday Backpack looks like all the rest of Peak Design's 20L Everyday Backpacks. Inside, however, you'll find a completely different configuration. Instead of rigid, adjustable dividers, you'll find more specialized pockets and pouches in which to stow your gear.
Modular FlexPockets will give you options for storing a mouse, keyboard, headphones, and other common PC accessories and the pockets can be arranged to fit your needs. The adjustable sleeve will also hold a powerful laptop up to 15" and a slip pocket has space for a 12.9" tablet. You can always squeeze in documents, as well.
All your miscellaneous everyday carry items will fit in cozily alongside your tech devices. It's looking like a great modification to an already great bag and it's nice to see a specialized collaboration from two top brands.
