FUJIFILM has announced its latest instant film camera, the INSTAX MINI 99, a stylish, all-black replacement for its decade-old stalwart MINI 90. While maintaining a similar form factor and functionality, the premium MINI 99 introduces several in-body creative controls that make it attractive for those who want to play, unencumbered, with one-of-a-kind prints.
The MINI 99’s expanded options are evident in its tactile design, with new twin dials controlling five brightness levels and seven color settings. Three more control buttons on the camera’s backside toggle the five shooting modes, the variable flash, and the self-timer. The camera also boasts twin shutter-release buttons, each situated for maximal convenience when shooting in portrait or landscape orientation.
The camera’s lens remains the same fixed 60mm focal length and f/12.7 aperture as the MINI 90, while introducing three areas of zone focus for landscapes, standard distances, and close-ups and selfies. The lens also has a Manual Vignette switch that narrows the aperture for the added artistic effect.
The MINI 99 makes shooting easy by calibrating the exposure automatically. Its seven color settings are split between a normal setting for a “real” look and six Color Effects, powered by color-changing LEDs located inside the camera, for the more experimental. The five shooting modes―Bulb, Indoor, Double Exposure, Sports, and Normal―optimize exposure in specific environmental scenarios. The camera includes a battery, battery charger, and a base grip with tripod mount.
It's clear that FUJIFILM is encouraging its INSTAX users to enjoy and experiment without bogging them down in the process. How do you see the MINI 99 fitting into the current instant film landscape?
