Sigma announces its highly anticipated 85mm f/1.2 DG Art lens alongside a new 20-60mm f/2.8-4 DG Contemporary lens, both for L-Mount and Sony E-mount full-frame mirrorless cameras.
The new 85mm f/1.2 lens enters the Art lineup as the label’s third f/1.2 lens and the company’s premium option for high-end portrait photographers, while the 20-60mm f/2.8-4 lens brings an ultra-wide-angle option to the standard zoom lens category in a compact, lightweight form factor.
The 85mm f/1.2 DG continues the quality of both the Art lineup and its f/1.2 lens options, competing both in resolving power, bokeh, and size. The 17-element, 12-group construction effectively arranges the lens’s aspherical elements to make it the smallest and lightest 85mm f/1.2 lens on the market. Thirteen diaphragm blades produce near-circular bokeh when used with the f/1.2 aperture’s characteristic shallow depth of field.
In addition to the aspherical elements, the optical design also uses two SLD elements to control axial chromatic aberrations, flaring, and ghosting.
The lens employs Sigma’s dual high-response linear actuator (HLA) system for its autofocus system, moving the lens’s larger, heavier f/1.2 optical elements with quiet ease for fast and accurate AF in both stills and video applications. The autofocus system combines with the optical design to suppress focus breathing when recording video.
Like other Art lenses, the 85mm f/1.2 DG boasts premium materials like aluminum and TSC for its build, offering dust- and splash-resistant structure alongside water- and oil-repelling coatings on the front element. The lens is also equipped with two customizable AFL buttons, an aperture ring lock, and a switch to de-click the aperture ring.
Sigma’s other lens announcement is the 20-60mm f/2.8-4 DG Contemporary lens, a compact standard zoom with an ultra-wide-angle 20mm focal length that also combines optical performance with portability. The palm-sized body is just 2.8” long and weighs about 13 oz while still offering uncompromised sharpness across the whole frame.
The lens also offers modest macro capabilities, with a minimum focus distance of 6.3” at 28mm and a maximum magnification ratio of 1:2.3 at 35mm.
The lens achieves autofocus with a linear motor HLA (high-response linear actuator) delivering fast accuracy, tracking performance, and minimal focus breathing. Due to its wider perspective and depth of field, the lens excels in video applications, especially those requiring a gimbal. The lens is also well-suited for e-commerce, webinars, and other corporate scenarios.
The lens joins Sigma’s other high-quality Contemporary full-frame lenses, employing the same dust- and splash-resistant build and water- and oil-repellent coatings. Given its size, build, and value, it makes for a distinctive all-day, everyday lens choice.
