The Tovatec Mera: An All-in-One Camera, Camcorder, and Dive Light

0Share

So, you’re on a dive and a beautiful sea turtle or shark comes swimming by. Your dive light will give you a good look at it, and you’ll have a memory to enjoy. Of course, if your dive light was fitted with a camera, you’d have an image or video to share with the world.

That’s the advantage of the Mera Light + Camera from Tovatec. It looks and feels like a standard flashlight-style dive light, but it’s equipped with a camera that shoots 1820 x 1080p HD video and takes 4MP JPEG photos. Unlike a conventional underwater rig that requires a housing for a dry-land camera, with its tray and handles and light arms (Tovatec says it’s “like alligator wrestling”), the 7.6 x 2.5" Mera doesn’t need anything extra like a housing or arms, can be carried and operated with one hand, and slips into a pocket on your BCD or belt when not needed—making it ideal for diving into wrecks or caves where space is tight, or just to make the dive experience easier with less gear.

Rated for use as deep as 197', the Mera Light + Camera is powered by a built-in rechargeable lithium-ion battery that will power the light for 2.5 hours on high (1,000 lumens) or 6 hours on low (500 lumens) on a charge. You can use the light as a primary dive light in the 12° beam angle spot, or switch to the 120° flood mode for video lighting. The camera will record 90 minutes of video with the light on and eight hours with it off, or take 10,000 still photos, before it’s time to recharge. The Mera Light + Camera is controlled with three buttons, easily reached with your thumb: one to turn the light on and select brightness and mode, one to snap the shutter for a still photo, and one to start and stop video recording. The switch panel lights up blue when the camera is turned on, flashes quickly red when shooting a still photo, and emits a slow on/off red glow when recording video. Your underwater images and video are stored on a user-supplied micro-SD card, Class 10 or higher, up to 64GB.

Naturally, the Mera Light + Camera works out of the water, too. It’s an easy-to-carry flashlight/video camera that could have applications in security, law enforcement, industrial settings and just around the home. But it’s first and foremost a tool for underwater exploration. You’ll be carrying a dive light anyway—why not carry one that records for your adventures in pictures and video, to be enjoyed for years to come?
