Designed as the compact camera to accompany you on all your adventures, Olympus has just announced the newest member of its aptly-named series of durable, rugged point-and-shoots: the Stylus Tough TG-870. Succeeding last year's TG-860, the new TG-870 improves upon an already tested set of features through the inclusion of a brighter LCD screen for easier visibility in daylight conditions, AF Lock for more accurate subject tracking, a trio of modes dedicated to enhanced nighttime shooting, and a baker's dozen of Art Filters.
At its core, the TG-870's most distinguishing attributes revolve around the environmental conditions it can endure: waterproof to 50', shockproof to 7', crushproof to 220 lbf, freeze proof to 14°F, and dustproof. These specs alone make the camera an ideal companion for your vacations to the beach, snowy wintertime expeditions, or even just a well-protected option to withstand everyday mishaps.
In regard to imaging, the TG-870 is no slouch, either. It sports a 16-megapixel 1/2.3" CMOS sensor and TruePic VII image processor to avail versatile stills shooting and movie recording capabilities, including continuous shooting up to 7 fps, Full HD 1080p video recording at 60 fps or HD 720p at 60 fps, and a top sensitivity of ISO 6400. The sleek 5x lens covers ultra-wide to short-telephoto perspectives, equivalent to 21-105mm in 35mm terms, and is benefitted by 5-axis Hybrid IS that blends both lens-shift type and digital stabilization methods to render sharper photos and movies.

Added to the robust physical construction of the camera, this new model can make use of a unique Monitor Boost function that ups the brightness values of the 3.0" 920k-dot LCD by 2.6x for notably better visibility when working underwater or outdoors in sunlit conditions. This screen also features a 180° tilting design for easy selfie compositions, and the body integrates a programmable front button that can be used to release the shutter, begin recording video, or activate Monitor Boost, a front LED light for close-up shooting, or Super Macro focusing capabilities down to 1cm. Among the other shooting capabilities of the TG-870, Live Composite has been added, which automatically combines numerous sequential exposures into a single frame to both build up overall exposure without losing detail in the shadows or highlights. Additionally, Nightscape Movie and Night Timelapse Movie modes are optimized for recording during nighttime shooting sessions. Rounding out the camera's feature set is built-in Wi-Fi for wireless sharing of imagery to and remote camera control from linked mobile devices, as well as an integrated GPS module for in-camera geo-tagging.
The Stylus Tough TG-870 is available in black, green, or white finishes.

Complementing the Wi-Fi connectivity, an integrated GPS module can quickly locate your position and also enables on-board geotagging and landmark-tagging capabilities. There is a built-in GPS antenna, so Wi-Fi is not required for using the geo-tagging features.
