B&H Photo News Roundup: Week of March 23, 2025

We have a wide variety of products to cover this week, so let’s jump right in! Canon released the PowerShot V1 and EOS R50 V cameras. RED added a new firmware update to the KOMODO cinema camera. Thypoch made some upgrades to its Simera lens design.

Additions to Canon’s V-Series Launch

Canon is bringing two new compact cameras to their robust lineup sure to please both amateur hobbyists and content creators. The PowerShot V1 is a point-and-shoot digital camera taking inspiration from the PowerShot V10 and enhancing its video and still-image performance. A 1.4”-type CMOS image sensor captures up to UHD 4K video. An integrated 16-50mm equivalent zoom lens covers most focal lengths needed in portraiture and street photography. Dual Pixel CMOS AF II technology provides precise autofocus and subject tracking for efficient content capture.

The EOS R50 V takes some of these characteristics and brings them into a mirrorless camera body with an APS-C sensor optimized for vloggers. A 24MP APS-C and DIGIC X processor allow you to shoot cropped 4K60 or full-size 4K30 footage. Slow and Fast shooting modes provide increased control over frame rate and playback. Subject detection elevates autofocus performance including a Register People Priority mode. Advanced video features seen in other cinema EOS cameras are now housed in a lightweight, compact camera body.

It also sports a multi-function accessory shoe that can help you record high-quality audio directly to the camera with compatible devices or utilize an external flash. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity on both models expedite image transfer and facilitate remote control. Not to mention another 3” vari-angle screen for easy self-recording.

Two lenses are also a part of this release, one of which being a dedicated kit lens for the R50V: the RF-S 14-30mm f/4-6.3 IS STM. The lens is a 22-48mm full-frame equivalent and has power zoom capabilities, built-in stabilization, and a lead-screw type STM motor. The other is the RF 20mm f/1.4 L VCM which is a hybrid wide-angle prime lens with manual controls. Multiple lens elements and coatings help correct chromatic aberrations and glare.

The 1.8.3 firmware update brings some of the refreshed KOMODO-X features to the base KOMODO model. The onboard LCD screen now has user pages for streamlined access to camera settings. Calibration time is reduced so getting your KOMODO up and running is faster. Toggle key functions faster for more efficiency in the field. All of these updates, on top of the KOMODO’s global shutter, REDCODE RAW recording, 6K resolution, and compact form factor make it a limitless tool for filmmakers.

Thypoch Enhances the Simera Primes

Thypoch has updated two of its Simera prime lenses, giving us the Type II versions of the 28mm f/1.4 and 35mm f/1.4 ASPH. Both have been redesigned for a more ergonomic form factor, providing a comfortable focus tab for single-finger operation. Aspherical elements and three high-refractive elements in each lens reduce color aberration for improved images. When you turn the focus ring on either lens to 0.7m, a dampening mechanism will alert you that the focusing distance is going to exceed the limit of the camera body. Retro-inspired square lens hoods give you a touch of nostalgia while blocking out unwanted light.
