Get In, Get Out, and Get Good with Klark Teknik DI Boxes

Widely known for making sturdy hardware for use in live sound reinforcement, Klark Teknik has released the Pro DI series, a line of passive and active direct boxes designed to solve common I/O problems and enable easy connectivity in a variety of live events. When a performer on stage has an instrument, such as a guitar, bass, or keyboard, or a line-level source such as a DJ mixer or laptop, they need a reliable, simple, and high-quality way of hooking up to the mixing console or PA system. That’s exactly what these Klark-Teknik DI boxes—the stereo-to-mono DI 10P, the stereo DI 20P and DI 22P, and the mono DI 10A—are built to do! Though they share some common ground (low noise, high headroom, linear performance, and custom-built Midas transformers), each one functions for a different purpose.

First up is the DI 10P, a passive DI that sums a stereo source to a mono output. It accepts an unbalanced input via a 3.5mm stereo mini jack or a pair of RCA coaxial connectors, and provides adjustable level for the left and right channels. The stereo input is summed to mono, then fed to a balanced Neutrik XLR 3-pin output, which offers a selectable ground lift to minimize hum from grounding issues.

Next is the DI 20P, a passive stereo DI made for 1/4" sources. Plug in a stereo synth or separate mono instruments (e.g. a guitar and bass) to the 1/4" TS inputs, each of which features a selectable pad to attenuate overly hot input signals. Outputs include 1/4" TS thru jacks and balanced Neutrik XLR 3-pin male sockets. As with the DI 10P, a ground-lift switch is present on the DI 20P.

Like the DI 10P and DI 20P, the passive DI 22P requires no batteries or power supply. This stereo direct box allows you to route a stereo source to the 3.5mm mini jack, RCA coaxial ports, or 1/4" TS sockets. A single selectable pad ensures that clipping the DI can be avoided, while ground-lift switches for the input and output eradicate noises from ground loops. Stereo balanced Neutrik XLR 3-pin outputs ensure standardized connectivity to your console or stage snake.

Last up is the DI 10A, an active DI intended for mono instruments. Being active, it requires a power source, which can be +48V phantom power or an internal 9V battery (available separately). In the event of a phantom power failure, the DI 10A will automatically switch to battery power for uninterrupted operation. It sports Neutrik XLR and 1/4" inputs, a 1/4" thru jack, and a Neutrik XLR output. In addition to a rear-panel selectable ground-lift switch, the front panel features a switchable pad, capable of attenuating the input 20 or 40 decibels.
