Smooth camera movements are the bread and butter of high-production-value projects. Usually accomplished through massive rigs for large film cameras, it’s not difficult to fathom why those solutions remain exclusive to high-budget filmmaking. Logically, with the advancement of digital technology, smaller DSLR and mirrorless cameras should be able to achieve similarly smooth results on a much smaller scale because of their relatively diminutive size. We at B&H are happy to announce these Lynx products from Cinetics that aim to bring smooth tracking shots to smaller cameras.
The base of the Lynx system is the Lynx Slider, on 24" carbon fiber rails and a smooth-sliding carriage for executing manual tracking shots with cameras weighing up to 11 pounds. If you need more sliding length, a second set of rails can be screwed in. Motorized sliding can be achieved with the addition of the Lynx Slider Motor and the Lynx Controller. The motor is quiet enough to be used while recording sound, in many cases, so feel free to set up a moving camera during an interview or dialogue scenes.
Add the Lynx Pan & Tilt Motors to the motorized slider setup to upgrade to a full three-axis, motion-control system. Even though there are several components built onto the slider, the Cinetics solution is small enough, in fact, that you can carry it, assemble it, and operate it alone. Another option is to buy all the components at once as the Lynx 3-Axis Motorized Slider.
Regardless of how many motors you have set up, the Lynx’s app-driven interface offers an intuitive way to unlock advanced functions, including programmed slides, slides with real-time adjustment, time-lapse, and stop-motion animation options. The app enables you to program-in complex movements with keyframes, or control your camera’s positioning in real time, using the virtual onscreen joystick or your mobile device’s built-in gyroscope (tilt your device in the direction you want the camera to move). If you’re shooting time-lapse or stop-motion animation sequences, the Controller can also interface with many popular cameras to act as an automatic shutter release.
If you’re operating smaller cameras and looking to up your cinematic production values or to get into the world of motion control, stop-motion animation, and time-lapse, be sure to check out pricing and availability of the Cinetics Lynx equipment on the B&H SuperStore website.
