JVC GY-HM250: The Stand-Alone Streaming and 4K Recording Camcorder

0Share

It seems like every camcorder is advertising 4K recording or streaming of some kind, but what if you could have both in the same camera body? The JVC GY-HM250, introduced at NAB 2018, offers just that, and more, for producing high-quality footage on-the-fly.

If you need to produce content that's ready for broadcast, the HM250 offers improved recording formats over its predecessor, the HM200. Firstly, 4:2:2 chroma subsampling is available in UHD 4K modes in addition to HD, as opposed to the more common 4:2:0, for greater color detail, and broadcast compatibility. If you're looking to improve your recording-to-publishing time further, you can apply your own full-screen or lower-third titles, in camera, in full-HD recording modes without a switcher or graphics generator.

Like its predecessor, the HM250 can stream HD or SD video (depending on bandwidth restrictions) over Wi-Fi, or, with an optional modem, directly over a 4G cellular network. The titling options available in the HD recording modes of the HM250 are also available for streaming. Having ready-to-go titles during a streaming session means less setup time, and lower likelihood of missing the moment in the field. For multi-cam setups using the Streamstar switching system, the Zero Config capability lets the HM250 detect other JVC equipment on the same network, simplifying setup.

Whether you prefer to stream live, or record for the edit, the JVC GY-HM250 delivers the goods for broadcast 4K or HD, as well as HD streaming.
