Manfrotto has announced two exciting FAST series tripod leg models and accessories, plus the highly upgraded Lykos 2.0 compact LED light. The FAST tripods are designed to set up and break down quickly and very easily so they can be used efficiently when combined with compact fluid heads and cameras. Two models were released and share many similarities.
The 635 Fast Single Leg Carbon Fiber Tripod features a 75mm bowl base and has a unique twist leg-locking system. One twist of the leg loosens/locks the entire leg, allowing you to make quick adjustments on the fly. This compact tripod supports up to 44-lb loads.
The larger 645 Fast Twin Leg Tripod is available in carbon fiber and aluminum versions. The 645 has a 100mm bowl base and includes a 75mm bowl adapter, allowing for compatibility with a wide range of tripod heads. It supports a payload of 55 lb. This one also has an efficient leg-lock system consisting of an L-Lock lever that controls the entire leg at once.
Both tripods have a high-precision angle selector system that lets you nearly instantly set a leg to one of three angle positions. Both models support an optional spreader that can be attached as either a ground spreader or mid-level spreader. Both also include rubber overshoes that attach to the native spiked feet. The lighter-weight 635 model additionally offers Manfrotto’s EASY LINK accessory attachment system on the side.
The tripods are available individually or sold in kits with the fairly recently released Manfrotto 608 and 612 nitrogen piston fluid heads. These heads have a flat base and 3/8"-16 mount so that they can be switched easily between a tripod and slider or similar camera support. They make a good match with the efficient FAST tripods.
As for the new light, the Lykos 2.0 is an on-camera LED light that incorporates daylight and tungsten color temperature. A great capability of this light is that it can be controlled completely remotely from an iOS/Android device using the Manfrotto LED app. Moreover, the app can control up to 13 units at the same time, allowing for a comprehensive setup that can be controlled by a single operator standing in one place.
The Lykos 2.0 uses the more power-efficient and longer-lasting SMD LEDs and is designed with many other key improvements over the original release. Color rendition has increased and the light beam is narrower. The light produces no visible hot spot on the subject and it provides a smoother transition from the light center to the perimeter of the light cone. The compact light is also water resistant. Though it’s not waterproof and can’t be submerged in water, it can be used safely in rainy conditions or environments where water might splash on it.
