New Zeiss 21-100mm Universal Zoom Lens for the Super 35mm Format

Zeiss has just announced a 21-100mm/T2.9-3.9 T* Lightweight Universal Zoom Lens available in five different mounts (EF, F, E, MFT, and PL). Like other Zeiss compact cinema glass, the mounts are interchangeable with five mounts available (also EF, F, E, MFT, and PL), though you may need an optical bench to get the calibration just right. Zeiss has designed this lens for the Super 35mm format, and although it’s a zoom lens, it can be used comfortably with even the compact Super 35mm cameras because it weighs only 4.4 lb. True to Zeiss’s style, this LWZ.3 lens offers a 294-degree long focus rotation, high-quality build materials, calibrated scales (available in feet or meters), consistent imaging quality across the entire image field, no vignetting, and efficient reduction of reflections, thanks to the famous ZEISS T* anti reflective coating.

The LWZ.3 lens features an impressive 11-blade diaphragm and a T2.9 - 22 aperture range. It measures approximately 9" long and is designed with 22 elements in 18 groups along that length. Close-focusing distance is 2' 8", which is fairly close for a zoom lens. The horizontal field of view is 61-14 degrees for Super 35 formats, 55-12 degrees for Academy 35, 56-13 degrees for APS-C, and 45-9 degrees for MFT.
