Aimed at high-end, cine-style productions, the new NIKKOR Z CINEMA 50mm T1.9 VV Lens is part of an upcoming nine-lens series covering larger than full-frame sensors. Compatible with RED V-RAPTOR [X] VV cameras, these lenses feature high optical performance and a precise autofocus function. Continuing the fusion of Nikon engineering and RED DIGITAL CINEMA recording/color science, Nikon has also released v2.00 firmware for Nikon ZR Cinema Camera users. This update provides several functions geared towards popular video workflows as desired by seasoned videographers.
Nikon envisions the NIKKOR Z CINEMA prime lenses enabling both filmmakers and content creators to benefit from the Nikon/RED synergy. Like the rest of the series, this Z-mount 50mm T1.9 lens combines superior visual rendering, fast autofocus, and a robust build with 0.8 MOD gears, all compatible with widescreen full-frame or VistaVision image capture.
Since acquiring RED in 2024, Nikon has developed the R3D NE format to bring the RED raw architecture to Nikon cameras. The v2.00 update now supports Log3G10 and REDWideGamutRGB for H.265 recording, letting you capture content that blends compact file size with high-latitude color grading. In addition, it addresses a high-ISO noise reduction issue noted by users when recording in H.265 log, with creators now able to select the level of reduction instead of it being a fixed value. The v2.00 firmware update also enables focus peaking while recording in R3D NE, an often-used function that wasn’t previously available with that codec.
For improved broadcast-style capture, RED has updated its RED CONTROL and RED CONTROL PRO remote-control applications, including remote capabilities for the Nikon ZR camera.
As part of its goal to provide firmware updates that are responsive to user needs, Nikon is also working on frequently requested features like open gate capture and anamorphic de-squeeze, with the aim of releasing that ZR Cinema Camera firmware in 2027.
