Since Nikon acquired RED Digital Cinema last year, we’ve seen a couple collaborations on the software front, but now the brands have unveiled their first hardware collaborations, new iterations of RED’s popular V-RAPTOR [X] and KOMODO [X] cinema cameras, now with locking Nikon Z-mounts. Releasing alongside these models are new Z-to-PL mount adapters, some with electronic ND filters, as well as conversion kits for shooters who want to add a Z-mount to existing V-RAPTOR [X] or KOMODO bodies. All these products come in a variety of kits and configurations, so let’s dive in.
In related news, Nikon officially released the NIKKOR Z 28-135mm PZ, their first lens for professional video production.
The V-RAPTOR [X] 8K VV made waves throughout the film industry as the first camera to pair a global shutter with a full-frame VistaVision-sized sensor. It’s the flagship of RED’s DSMC3 fleet, sporting IP connectivity, 17+ stops of dynamic range, and high frame rates like 8K120. The camera originally came with a locking RF-mount, but will now be available with a locking Z-mount. You can buy this new version by itself, in a Production Pack with Gold Mount or V-Mount batteries, or in a Starter Pack with a 7” touchscreen and V-Mount batteries. Alternatively, you can purchase a Z-Mount Conversion Kit for existing V-RAPTOR [X] bodies, or a Z-Mount Upgrade Kit if you have older V-RAPTOR iterations like the V-RAPTOR 8K S35 or 6K S35.
The KOMODO-X 6K sports a global shutter as well, alongside a Super 35-sized sensor and a more compact body. You’re still getting high frame rates like 6K80 and 4K120, plus IP connectivity, an integrated micro-V-Lock, and 12G-SDI out. Like the V-RAPTOR [X], the KOMODO-X originally shipped with a locking RF-mount, so this new Z-mount variation should prove popular with filmmakers interested in using Nikon glass. The Z-mount body is available by itself, in a Production Pack with Gold Mount or V-Mount batteries, or in a Power Zoom Pack with the versatile Nikon Z 28-135mm f/4 PZ lens. This fill-frame power zoom lens is custom-built for video and ideal for in-the-field shooting, covering a wide focal range with a consistent aperture and 11 different zoom speeds. There is also a Z-Mount Conversion Kit available for existing KOMODO-X owners.
Complementing these new cameras are four fresh Z-to-PL adapters that support Cookie /i lens communication and record triggering. These V-RAPTOR [X] and KOMODO-X adapters are available in standard configurations or with a dial-in 2-7 stop electronic neutral density filter. You can adjust the ND by ¼, 1/3, or full stop increments via integrated buttons on the adapter or through existing RED control protocols on monitors and apps. These Z-to-PL adapters include support brackets to ensure even heavy lenses won’t damage your mount, and the ND filter iterations come with a clear filter to slot in when you don’t need any neutral density.
