Sirui continues to provide anamorphic innovation with their new Saturn V2 series, 1.6x-squeeze T2.9 cine lenses with full-frame coverage and support for both horizontal and vertical anamorphic shooting. The lenses weigh under 500g and have neutral flaring that adapts to the color of the light source. The initial set consists of a 35mm, 50mm, and 75mm, and is available in Sony E, Canon RF, and L-mount.
In addition to their impressive weight (437-494g depending on mount and focal length), the lenses are only 4-4.5” long, ideal for gimbals, sliders, travel or anyone trying to stay light. Expect the classic oval anamorphic bokeh, as well as low chromatic aberration and well-controlled distortion. All three focal lengths have 120° focus throws, 3’ minimum focusing distances, 62mm filter threads, identical gear positioning, and a 45mm image circle. They’re manual focus only, and come with a custom-cut hard case.
The big draw of the Saturn V2 lenses is their unified look across the series and the flexibility with aspect ratios, as the lenses can rotate 90° via an in-built switch to match the desired stretch orientation, then lock in place. Using them in horizontal mode on a 16:9 sensor gets you a 2.84:1 widescreen look post de-squeeze, while a 3:2 sensor turns into a 2.4:1 final image. Shooting in vertical mode, 9:16 turns into 0.9:1, and a 2:3 image stretches to 1.07:1, a useful size if you’re cropping to multiple deliverables.
