Already incredible compact cinema cameras, Sony's FX3 and FX30 just got even better. With the release of firmware version 3.0 for the full-frame FX3 and version 2.0 for the Super 35 FX30, there are a ton of new features for filmmakers to utilize. Included in this update is the ability to record in DCI 4K in a true 24.00 fps and anamorphic de-squeeze.
DCI 4K and True 24 fps Recording
Let's start with one of the coolest changes: the ability to choose DCI 4K (4096 x 2160) resolution. This feature has been on my wish list since the FX3 was released over two years ago and was noted again when I reviewed the FX30. In addition to this new resolution—available only in the XAVC S-I format at 240 Mb/s 10-bit 4:2:2—you will be able to select true 24.00 fps as your frame rate. This makes the FX3/FX30 much more sensible as B, C, or even D cameras on set that are using a VENICE 2, FX9, or FX6.
Now that I've had the chance to download the firmware on an FX3 and check out the actual menu, I have some notes on using the true 24 fps option. First off, ProRes RAW does not work at the moment. It seems that Atomos may need to develop a firmware update for the Ninja V, at least for full functionality. You also need to pop into S&Q Mode to access 48 fps if you want to shoot slow-motion video in a similar multiple.
But there's good news, too. Even though there still isn't shutter angle, Sony added a few more shutter speed options: 1/24, 1/48, and 1/96 second. This should get you as close as possible to that desired 180-degree shutter.
Breathing Compensation for the FX3
When the FX30 was released the Breathing Compensation function was baked right in. With the update, the FX3 now also features it. This should provide a nice, in-camera adjustment to account for breathing with select Sony lenses.
Anamorphic De-squeeze
If you are an anamorphic aficionado, you will now be able to properly preview your image right on the rear display. You can select between 1.3x and 2.0x squeeze correction. However, this comes with some caveats.
First, you will not be able to use this setting unless you are in a Log Shooting Mode (Cine EI, Cine EI Quick, Flexible ISO). Then, when the feature is turned on, you will be locked to manual focus and will not have the ability to turn on in-body image stabilization.
This is something to keep in mind. But if you have been wanting to ditch an external monitor for your shorter anamorphic shoots, this will help a ton.
Creators' App Support
If you didn't know, Sony is replacing the Imaging Edge Mobile app with the new Creators' App. This will provide similar functionality as before with the ability to transfer images, control the camera from your smartphone, and more.
You'll need to download the update to use the latest version of the Creators' App with the FX3 or FX30.
Miscellaneous Operation Updates
There are a few other smaller changes that will help the general functionality of the camera:
-
Slow & Quick and Movie Modes can now be set to a custom key
-
File names can now use the Long File Name format, like other Cinema Line cameras
-
General improvements to operational stability
This is a major improvement for the FX3 and FX30, so you'll want to jump on it. Here are the instructions and download links for the new firmware updates so you can install them now:

Hi, What is the maximum frame rate in DCI 4k?
Hi Sahara -
DCI 4K (4096 x 2160) resolution @ 24fps
Is flash color available with this update on FX3?
Hi William -
Flash color is not listed.
Very nice! But need same video related features in A7SIII as it video related camera and 1 to 1 match to fx3. Even price in my region was $4200 when i bought it
Thank you. Now how about a usable waveform with momentary full frame transparent overlay.
I prefer a super stripped down camera for a number of reasons. No external monitor (other than bluetooth to director's iPad)
The FX30 is a super small and low impact docco camera, I want to keep it that way.
Now if only we can get that desqueeze (1.8x!) on the a7siii :/
very nice Sony you keep updating fx3 cheap cameras! and for Sony a7s3 and A1 that are twice the price nothing !shame on you Sony for your grid....
