We at B&H are pleased to announce the Steadicam Volt from Tiffen, which combines a mechanical balance type stabilizer with 3-axis electronic gyro stabilizer in a compact package, suitable for smartphones. Steadicam, which innovated camera stabilization, and has long been known for the mechanical balancing of cameras to create smooth, floating camera moves, has taken its time moving into electronic stabilization. The result is the Steadicam Volt, which combines the best of both worlds, creating a mechanically balanced hand stabilizer with a built-in gyroscope.
This combination creates exceedingly smooth camera moves—the gyroscope enhances the capabilities of the mechanical gimbal. The Volt features two different gyro-aided operating modes: a Sport mode and a Movie Mode. Sport mode is enabled by default and employs inertia in panning movements. Movie mode employs inertia in both pan and tilt movements for more traditional Steadicam-style shooting. Just as important as the operating modes is that you can use an Android or iOS app to fine-tune your setup for optimal performance. The stabilization that the mechanical balancing brings eases the load on the batteries, and allows the stabilizer to function even if you manage to drain the internal battery pack.
