Sand bags come in a variety of shapes and weights. They are used for securing the bases of light stands and set walls. Many have handles, for hanging on hooks or risers. Some have two wings, to allow draping over light stand legs.
Most are cordura nylon, some are vinyl covered and waterproof.
Some models of sandbags are shipped empty, for convenience and economy. They can be filled with sand, or any type of weight you provide, and emptied for storage, or transport.

Comments about Matthews Senior Boa Weight Bag - Black - 15 lbs:
I'm back to using lighter weight stands for location shoots instead of C-stands. I just didn't need 25 to 40 pound sandbags anymore. The Matthews BOA bags are perfect for lighter weight stands. They're also perfect for middle-aged backs and although they aren't cheap, they are a lot cheaper than a physical therapy bill for lugging around a ton of heavier sandbags. I use them on all my stands for video shoots. Because they're smaller, they're easier to pack and store. First rate build quality and like their name implies, they do indeed grip like my old pet boa constrictor.
