This is an Impact 30" white satin umbrella with removable black backing. Umbrellas soften, broaden, and diminish the light output of any tungsten or flash light source. Umbrellas with a white interior will soften and weaken light more than an umbrella with a silver lining. A white umbrella without a black backing may also be used as a makeshift softbox, although the use of the light will not be as efficient as with a softbox.
Choosing umbrella size is determined by the size of the subject, and the strength of the light supply being used. Choosing an umbrella surface is as subjective as choosing a paint and brush.
This size is perfect for a 1 person head shot, or a 2x3 ft product setup.

Comments about Impact 30" Convertible Umbrella:
I bought this to use for pictures of my kids. My Canon 430EX was giving off a very harsh flash, and I bought this to help soften and give a more natural light. I like shooting with the flash behind the umbrella and going through the white material - gives a great soft effect.
Note that I'd recommend the stand and bracketing to go with this so you don't have to hold it.

This is a bit small but since I'm using it outdoors it catches less wind. I started putting lots of weights on my stands which also helps....a lot. Love the fact I can peel off the cover and shoot through it.

Comments about Impact 30" Convertible Umbrella:
First off I'd like to say that I love ordering at BH. [...] the product always comes as described.I needed a compact umbrella with the possibillity to convert it to a shoot throug to bring along on an upcoming Europe trip as part of my mini studio. And that's exactly what this product is. Its build quality for the price is above average and when handled with care you should get more than your money's worth. This umbrella is sort of a dichotomy, it is small in size so it's incredibly portable which is why I bought it but do to it's small size you loose a bit of softness in the photos but depending on your creative skills you can still get a very acceptable amount of softness in your portraits, a lot more than using direct, on camera flash. I have tested it in various setups indoor and outdoors and I'm very impressed with it's ability to light up a subject outdoors as well which was also a requirement for me.All in all, a good product to have for it's very affordable price.

Easy to remove the black cover.
I'm a newbie to photography so I don't have a standard to compare it too. For me, it does the job
It's a bit smaller than I thought it would be (I use metric measures and didn't calculate very well ) So I ordered a 43'' right after

I use these umbrellas for weddings and they wrk fine. The are a little small which can be fixed by where the lights with the umbrellas are placed.
