Choosing the Modem
If you're setting up an internet connection, you're going to need a modem. These devices convert internet data into a signal that you can use to connect your computers and other devices to the web, either with a wireless router or with a network Ethernet cable. You can choose between a selection of different modems, including DSL and cable options.
Types of Modems
There are three types of modems available for internet access: DSL, cable, and dial-up. Choose one based on your needs and internet setup.
DSL
DSL is faster than a dial-up connection, and it connects through your phone line. Unlike a dial-up connection, you can use DSL internet and your phone line at the same time. If you don't want a phone line in your home, you can still connect through DSL using something called a "naked DSL" line. A naked DSL line is a service that allows you to connect your devices to the internet through a phone line but without an assigned phone number. DSL modems are perfectly capable of satisfying most of your internet needs.
Cable
If you're looking for fast internet speeds, choose high-speed cable modems. This method doesn't require phone service of any kind to operate. You can also set up everything quickly and easily. A cable modem is ideal for casual browsing and advanced tasks like online gaming. DOCSIS modems represent a step up from your typical cable modem. DOCSIS 3.1 modems are some of the fastest in the business, and they provide high connection speeds without the need to replace your existing coaxial cable networks. This system helps deliver download speeds of up to 10 Gbps and upload speeds of up to 1 Gbps.
Dial-Up
Dial-up modems share space with your landline telephone, like DSL, but you don't need any special cables or boxes to get online. You just need your phone line, a dial-up account, and the modem in your computer.
Connecting to a Modem Wirelessly vs. With an Ethernet Cable
All modems need to connect by wire to your wall socket for an internet connection, but you can connect your devices to modems wirelessly. Connecting to your modem wirelessly is very convenient, as there's no need for wires or cables. If you live in a large home, you can extend the range of your wireless router with a wireless range extender. On the other hand, connecting your computer to your modem with a network Ethernet cable reduces lag time, and typically offers faster connection speeds. Connecting your computer to your modem with an Ethernet cable also makes it easier to secure and protect your data.
