The Blackmagic Design HyperDeck Studio 2 is a file-based deck that features the same functionality and control of professional tape decks. It records uncompressed video with 4:2:2 color sampling at 10-bit in Quicktime format, and also records video using either ProRes or DNxHD codecs. With two SSD slots, you can record almost endlessly as one SSD becomes full, recording automatically continues on to the other. The HyperDeck Studio features one 3G-SDI input and three SD/HD/3G-SDI outputs plus a loopthrough output, and one HDMI input and one HDMI output. All outputs, except the loopthrough SDI, are always active, so playback is available on both the SDI and HDMI outputs no matter what input it was recorded from.

The Studio 2 is a 1RU rack mountable unit, with built-in rack mount ears. It features illuminated front panel button control and a jog/shuttle wheel for analog scrubbing. RS-422 control is supported for external control. You can also control the unit using either the USB port or over Ethernet via the RJ45 connector. An integrated LCD on the front panel allows you to monitor the video, and display timecode and transport information.

File-Based Recording
The HypeDeck Studio 2 records to uncompressed Quicktime at 10-bit with 4:2:2 color sampling. It also records to ProRes 422(HQ), Avid DNxHD and Avid DNxHD MXF
Two SSD Bays
The unit incorporates two 2.5" SSD slots that allow you to record almost endlessly as recording seamlessly switches from one SSD to the other as the first one fills up.
Video Signals
The HyperDeck Studio 2 features separate dedicated input & output connectors, and supports SD/HD signals over SDI and HDMI. In addition to NTSC and PAL signals, 720 x 480p and 720 x 576p signals are only supported over HDMI.
VTR Style Controls
The HyperDeck Studio 2 features VTR style front panel controls for record and playback. With illuminated buttons, for working in dim locations or settings, while a built-in jog/shuttle wheel provides analog style control over your playback.
  • The HyperDeck Studio 2 features one HDMI, two SDI, and one SDI monitor out which are always active, no matter what the original input signal is. The exception is with 480p & 576p signals over HDMI, these signals will only play back over the HDMI output.
  • The unit also features a loopthrough SDI output that only passes the signal from the SDI input, and does not output recorded video from the SSDs.
The unit is controllable via RS-422 control and over the Ethernet or USB port.
Built-In LCD Monitor
The unit's front panel also features a built-in LCD screen that allows you to monitor input or playback video as well as timecode, format, and audio levels.
SDI Connectors
The unit's SDI connectors are 3G capable, but currently the unit only supports HD video up to 1.5Gb/s (HD-SDI).
Included Software
The HyperDeck Studio 2 includes HyperDeck Utility.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works like a champ We bought the unit and installed it in the rack, then while I was setting up audio my technical director pulled out the owner's manual and got the unit working and ran a test before I was finished with the audio set up. We commenced capture of two days of shooting and shooting and switching. The SSD records to one side and then the other without stopping. We recorded continuously for 10 hrs the first day and 8 hrs the next day. Looks and sounds great!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nice gear, solidly built Very impressed with the quality of this product. Buttons/switches seem to be of high quality. Once SSD is formatted it plugs in and is recognized easily. In using the unit it feels just like using a VTR - all functions essentially the same, the only difference is the recording medium. I also picked up a ATEM switcher to go with this unit and the two compliment each other really well.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Solid Hardware Weak Support Reliable operation. Delivers the performance needed at a reasonable price. There are several minor issues that cost it at least a star, however. The case was cosmetically damaged (very minor). Case part appears to have been damaged before assembly, so poor quality control there.Documentation for programming the unit is sparse. One pinout for RS422 is not identified. They do not have a USB to RS422 converter accessory, and third party converters do not match pinouts on the unit, which requires some do-it-yourself wiring for connecting to a computer through a USB port. (RS422 pinouts on a DB9 do not have an industry standard.)Details of the Ethernet programming command set are sparse. Required a lot of trial and error programming to write software for the unit. If you are not writing code for the unit you won't care about this.Technical support is poor. You have to send a technical support request and then sometimes they get back to you (many days later) and sometimes they don't. Follow up questions are equally poorly handled. The slots for the SSDs are significantly oversized in height, making it difficult to line up the SSDs when inserting. My 240 GB SSDs flop around in the slots, flexing the connectors as the SSDs sag on the connectors. The SSDs are 7 mm high while the slots are 12 mm. This is the worst technical flaw of the unit.Despite the minor flaws still worth the money. I just hope the SSD connectors last!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nice, Affordable Deck Pros: Easy to use Has a few different formats to choose from Affordable Relay records so you don't run out of disk space Cons: No power cord included (Seriously, BlackMagic, we're spending close to $1000 on a piece of hardware- you can include a $5 power cord.) Every 107GB or 2 hours, 7 minutes and 29 frames it creates a new file. It's super annoying when you're trying to record a baseball game and wind up with 2 files that you have to edit together. BlackMagic said this is normal but had no rhyme or reason for it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great for signal recording!! I already had one of this, but I need to back up another signal to, so I bought the same machine again. It's great to record a backup signal for real. I need to record the clean feed and program for a 30 hrs show and this machine made it easy and precise. Great machine for the price!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Inexpensive Deck I have 3 of these decks for recording 1080i content to with the hdsdi input. They are solid and work great right out of the box. *I would recommend checking firmware upgrades when you first get them and syncing them with the correct time.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great recorder Just purchased this as a new primary recording in a church broadcast environment. Works really well. I was able to set it up easily. Love the display on the front and the ease of use. I haven't found any negatives yet.
