Mackie CR3 overview

  • 1Description

The Mackie CR3 - 3" Woofer Creative Reference Multimedia Monitors (Pair) are a compact and portable solution for providing audio playback in home and studio environments for multimedia work such as mixing music or doing sound for film. The pair consists of one passive un-powered speaker and one Class AB amplifier powered speaker that connect with an included 6' stereo cable. The monitors use 3" polypropylene-coated woofers and a rear port tube for the low end and 0.75" silk dome tweeters for the highs to deliver a frequency response of 80 to 20,000 Hz with a maximum SPL of 97 dB.

A switch allows you to select whether the powered speaker will function as the left or right speaker which is helpful when having to position the speakers near power outlets or when deciding which side is preferable for the volume knob. A front panel LED power ring illuminated on/off switch and volume knob allows you to control level and a dedicated front panel headphone output that defeats the main speaker output can be used to expand the system's monitoring versatility.

A front panel 1/8" stereo input and included 1/8" to 1/8" cable allows you to connect your smartphone or other mobile device directly to the monitors. Other equipment such as audio interfaces, CD players, or mixers, can be connected to the rear panel 1/4" TRS, 1/8" TRS, or RCA inputs. The monitors also come with an 1/8" stereo to RCA cable for connecting to a computer as well as isolation pads for reducing the transmission of structural vibrations and allowing the monitors to be tilted slightly up or down for a better listening angle.

    Mackie CR3 reviews

CR3 - 3" Woofer Creative Reference Multimedia Monitors (Pair) is rated 4.3 out of 5 by 26.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Impressed active speakers I have Audioengine D1 amp and I want to find a pair of good speakers. After comparing with several pairs of high end active speakers, I decided to go for Mackie CR3. It doesn't consider the high end, but close to the high end class. The build of the speakers are solid. Cable connecting is easy as 1-2-3. I did not use the included cable/wires for connection. I brought a monster RCA cable and 1/4 phone adapters for a little bit better sound. Bass is not very thick in this speaker, and yes, most people commented this as well. Mid-range and treble are pretty balance and decent. If you want a pair of speakers for your desktop but doesn't want to spend more money, this is the pair for you.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Amazing for the price My first pair of studio monitors and I am BLOWN AWAY! I don't think I can go back to normal PC speakers. I like that I can control power by both a back switch and the volume knob. Input flexibility is quite nice. Obviously they're way bigger than normal speakers. Since I use multiple monitors, I had to get wall mounts and angle them downward. You obviously need the right angles to get the best sound out of them. I work with what I got. They sound great for media and audio/video editing. Best audio investment I've made in a long time. No obnoxious pops or electrical noise when powering on.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Ummmm I use the speakers as reference monitoring devices for a video editing workstation. Although I cannot compare them to another speaker set, I believe they color the signal a bit. I may send them to my TV as better than stock audio speakers. Calling them reference monitors may be misleading.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Sound, As Expected I use this for personal use in a 200 square foot room attached to my computer with no DAC (to be fixed soon) or amp. I typically use it or music, but will also watch the occasional movie or YouTube video. This is perfect for my needs. Fits well on my desk, produces MUCH better sound that the cheaper an much older Logitech 2.1 system it replaced. I decided to take these over the CR4s because space was a concern, and I didn't think I needed all that bass response. That was almost entirely true. My only complaint about the sound is that a bit is missing on the low end. As well, the isolation pads that came with the speakers left a bit to be desired. I thought they'd be sloped so that I could angle them upwards to my ears. That isn't the case, but I made a workaround. That being said, everything else is top notch: build quality, ease of setup, inputs, and response int he mids and highs. Highly recommended for a small room or office.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great speakers for the $$$ I was turned on to these by a friend and I use them in a small home recording studio. They, work, look and sound great and I like that they have the 1/4 outputs on the back. It made it very easy to add them to my mixing board. The speakers didn't come with those cords but they do come with others making them an easy add to a computer or mobile device.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from They do what I wanted There is nothing spectacular about these, but they do what I needed, speakers to run fairly high sound cue levels during a theatre play rehearsal. One speaker has the amp in it. The other is passive and connects to the powered speaker with the supplied zip cord -- not my preference, but ok for my use. Three inch woofers will always be limited in the bass sound. (The play will be making use of the subwoofers installed in the space), but smaller speakers than these would have been pretty thin sounding for the rehearsals. If you really need good studio monitors, you should go with larger woofers. But, if space is limited, these could be your answer. They come with foam isolation pads to decouple the sound from the surface they are set on. Worth the money for me and my uses.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great value for the money Grabbed these for 99 bucks and they sound great. They come with all you need to set them up in most instances. I use them as tv speakers mainly because all stock tv speakers are horrible. Major upgrade in that respect. I also use them to connect to my phone for music (by cable, as these are not bluetooth), and they sound great! Finally, I use them as an output for my guitar (through the headphone output in a small guitar fx unit), and that sounds decent also. The only reason I'm not giving them 5 is they are built fairly cheaply. One of the tweeters came with a dent in it. I only just noticed it, and I don't know that it affects the sound much, so I don't think it's worth returning. I took a straw and sucked it out, but the structure is weak and upon a light touch it goes back in.
