B+W 66-045615 overview

  • 1Description

The B+W 58mm Kaesemann Circular Polarizer MRC Filter helps to reduce reflections and glare by filtering out light that has become polarized due to reflection from a non-metallic surface. The light from the sun naturally becomes partially polarized due to reflecting off electrons in air molecules, causing the light to scatter into what appears as haze. A polarizing filter arranges, and filters, this directionally polarized light perpendicularly to the reflected light, allowing for the absorption of much of this light. This results in a noticeable reduction of glare and reflections from non-metallic surfaces and an increase in the saturation of skies and foliage.

A circular polarizer only differs from a linear polarizer in that it contains a quarter wave plane in addition to the linear polarizing filter. The addition of this quarter wave plane is to circularly polarize the linearly polarized light for the use of auto focus and exposure functions. Due to how the light is broken down and filtered with a linear polarizer, auto focus and exposure accuracy become skewed during use. When the light becomes circularly polarized, it permits the use of these functions.

Kaesemann-type filters feature greater optical efficiency than regular polarizing foils and are more neutral in color. The polarizing foils are cemented between plano-parallel optical glass layers, which are then precision-polished to achieve the most accurate plano-parallel surface. This edge sealing protects the filter layers from humidity and are ideal for use with high-speed telephoto and apochromatic lenses.

The Multi-Resistant Coating (MRC) is both an anti-reflection coating as well as a protective surface. It helps to increase light transmission by reducing reflections, scattered light, and ghosting. Additionally, it offers greater protection to the filter substrate and stays cleaner for longer than uncoated filters.

B+W filters are constructed from high quality Schott glass for increased optical clarity and color fidelity. They feature a brass filter ring for durability as well as jamming prevention.

Helps to reduce reflections and glare by filtering out light that has become polarized due to reflection from a non-metallic surface.
Polarizing filters arrange, and filter, directionally polarized light perpendicularly to the reflected light, allowing for the absorption of much of the light.
Clears up haze in distant landscapes and provides more saturated, vivid colors.
Strongest effect when used at a 90° from the sun.
Circular polarizers are ideal for use with digital cameras and autofocus lenses where a linear polarizer will often disrupt auto exposure and focus features.
Kaesemann polarizing foils provide highly neutral coloring and higher image quality than conventional polarizing foils.
Multi-Resistant Coating offers both protection to the glass and helps to improve light transmission and image quality.
Constructed from high quality Schott glass for optical clarity.
Brass filter ring helps to prevent jamming and provides additional strength.

58mm Kaesemann Circular Polarizer MRC Filter is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 48.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Why not the best? I'm no expert on optics, but when I pay about $2k for glass, why risk cheap protection/optical performance in front of it?I do a lot of cold weather (winter at altitude in New England) photography. The Kaesemann seal really appeals to me. The last thing I need is my optics frosting on me!Glare, especially in the snow, is a huge factor shooting in those conditions. The polarizing filter really helps there. But I need to know that I have the best possible product in front of my glass when I schlep it up about 4000 vertical feet during a 4-5 hour hike.I'll leave it at 4 stars until I've used it more and let someone else, who really knows their stuff, give it 5.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Product! I bought my first DSLR (Canon Rebel XSi with kit lens) a couple months ago and I'm trying to get into photography. I had it in my mind when I bought my camera that I wanted a circular polarizer, but I had my doubts about their usefulness, thinking whatever function they serve could be replicated during post processing. Well, I'll admit, I was wrong. Although I love the ability to turn the filter to vary the saturation of the skies, which can be replicated during post, to an extent, my favorite thing about it is the ability to cut down glare to see through glass. Most of my picture taking involves cars as the subject, and using this filter I can adjust to see through the windshield, rather than the windshield appearing as a glowing white sheet of glare, especially when the windshield is dirty. My only real concern about using this was the possibility of vignetting, but it hasn't been an issue at all. I haven't seen any vignetting in any of the pictures I've taken. The only not so great thing about this filter would be the cost, I guess. But, from past experiences with a variety of products, it often seems to be less expensive in the long run if you just spring for a better quality product in the beginning. In the case of photography equipment, particularly filters and lenses, lower quality products can negatively effect the quality of the pictures.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from excellent and worth the money. spend the extra money and just buy this. you won't open the package wondering how you got scammed. it has a heft, its smooth to operate, cleans easily, and produces excellent images. i'm using it in greece where salt water spray is a frequent issue. the filter has been excellent.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very high quality I don't have a lab for running optical tests, but I know if I buy B+W filters, I don't have to worry about the quality. Not cheap, but the best rarely is.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Reeks of Quality Excellent optics and smooth rotation. Solid German build. I keep a B&H wide angle hood attached to the front of the filter, which makes rotation easy, but vignetting begins to appear in the corners at 28mm. So that needs to be kept in mind when composing the shot.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great optics... so so manufactoring... The lens has a very good effect (especially when shooting landscapes). My only complaint is that rotating the filter is not smooth, it catches a bit. This is a minor complaint in an otherwise great filter.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Worth the Price A great example of solid German craftsmanship. Outer ring rotates smoothly. It takes care of the glare and reflections. Provides good saturation.
