Korg VOLCASAMPLE overview

  • 1Description

The Volca Sample from Korg is a digital sample sequencer that allows for sequencing up to one-hundred samples. The step sequencer is designed for ease of editing and to allow parts to be inserted or removed "on the fly." Sixteen step-keys enter notes while maintaining visual confirmation of the timing of the notes in a measure. A performance can be recorded in real time. Up to ten of the sequence patterns created can be stored in internal memory.

The motion sequence function records any time-varying changes made to the sound using the knob movements. An active step function allows for skipping steps during the sequence, and the step jump function instantly plays just the key-pressed step. A swing function adjusts the swing playback position, generating the distinctive groove of dance music styles.

A frequency isolator applies changes to the sound by boosting or cutting the low/high ranges with the isolator implemented as an analog circuit. The built-in reverb effect can be switched on/off for each part, and it is possible to save up to six song patterns, each combining up to sixteen sequences. Additional samples can be loaded using the volca sample's dedicated iOS app (the internal sounds are overwritten).

    Korg VOLCASAMPLE reviews

Volca Sample Digital Sample Sequencer is rated 4.9 out of 5 by 7.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Fun and relatively easy to use I am a novice with musical equipment, and this unit is certainly suitable for me. A straightforward workflow gets you up and running really quickly. I was also able to record and load my own sample using my Android phone. So no concerns there. My only qualms are that there are some functions that I'd like to use, and I know are on the machine, but there is no easy way to discover how to use them. You pretty much have to watch youtube videos or search online to find anything, and even then, descriptions are cryptic or use language for more advanced users... which I am not. A great unit nonetheless and will be fun for years.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Welcome Addition to the Volca Line-up Boy does this thing add a load of flexibility to any setup. In conjunction with the Korg Volca Beats, Bass & Keys this thing rocks, by itself this thing rocks. So many ways to edit, alter, and modify samples right on the front panel. I was one of those who was initially a little miffed that Korg only released a sample editor for iOS, but thankfully they then released a SDK for all other users. I jumped on purchasing one once it was up for pre-order. If, like me, you will be using Android for samples be sure to get the free Caustic Editor for the Volca Sample, it alone adds a ton of features that bring sampling back to a fun physical act like in the good ole days. Whether you own the other Volcas, or are just looking for a sampler/sequencer for the price you can't go wrong with this little unit.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Pro sound from a cheap toy I'm using this as an electronic drum kit / sampler, and it does exactly what I need it to do. It is very light weight and feels like it could break, and the knobs are only mostly responsive, but it generally works as advertised. Also some of the functions involve combinations of holding down the various buttons on the right, and it hinder my workflow. Nevertheless, I'm very happy with this purchase and would recommend it highly.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing I got the Volva Sample to add sampling capabilities to my live rig, and what an inspired step it was! The Vsample allows easy and intuitive manipulation of short samples that can be used and abused in any way imaginable. You can reverse, chop, slow down, speed up, pitch up or down each sample and create variations on the fly. A fsvorite trick is to build an entire track out of one sample, wich can be manipulated in a way to provide bass drum, bass, lead, etc... This might seem complicated on paper, but really, you can get up and running in a matter of minutes. There are plenty of youtube tutorials available and their number is growing by the minute as the product is getting more available. You don't need to already own the other volcas, but if you do, then you've got a pretty complete live set at your fingertips. The addition of a speaker is great and since it's battery operated with a very small footprint makes it a great portable music making device. It can accept midi and gate (from external instruments) so can easily be slaved to your setup, or can be synced to the other volcas as well. It comes preloaded with a vast collection of one shot samples ranging from drum sounds to bass and keyboard hits as well as SFX and spoken words. You can replace any of the samples using an iphone or android device or even your pc. You can do this in different ways: 1- record your voice using the iphone app by Korg (auidio pocket) then hook the headphone output to the sync input (cable provided in the box), select the slot you wish to record to and hit 'transfer.' The sample will replce the slot you selected and can be used immeditatly afterwards. 2- Since Korg made their SDK publicly available, third party apps allow to use androis for the same effect. One of them is 'Caustic' which is cross platform so this option is available to anfroid as well. 3- You can use any wav sample you already have from your collection on your computer. You can use the PC or Mac version of caustic to transfer to the Vsample from the computer as well. The interface is exactly the same as the phone app, so learning curve isn't steep at all. This is not a sampler, but a sampler player, so don't expect to have a microphone or line input on the device. All in all, this is a great device that can add a lot of peps to your performances, and the unique built in sequencer allows for great unexpected rhythmic results.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The go-to sample sequencer! The Volca Sample is easily the most inexpensive, user friendly sample-playback device with a built in 16 step XOX style step sequencer on the market! For the price you're getting way more than you bargained for. This Volca could easily be your own custom drum machine loaded with 100 of your own personal favourite drum samples. The memory slots recall 10 samples of your choice for each memory slot. Each save will play back your samples exactly as you saved your pattern, with every recorded parameter tweak minus tempo & swing! The ability to reverse samples & pitch your sounds up & down makes this machine perfect for creating fresh, creative beat structures. You can even choose to upload samples of recorded synthesizer hits, vocal clips or anything inbetween to keep things interesting. This is a must buy for anyone who is not satisfied with every sound on their current or dream drum machines. I've combined the sounds from the EMU Drumulator, MFB Tanzbr, & Roland TR-707 all together with no second thought. This device was created for experimentation, so go nuts on it!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Endless Creativity Right out of the box, if you posses any creativity the possibilities are endless. The built in samples are more then enough to create for days. Using the apps available for IOS or Android make it where you can use any sample you'd like even things you record on your own. The volca series is great but the Korg Volca Sample is the all star!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great sound in a small package Incredible digital sound quality with analog aspects (the two isolating knobs) and handheld size make it a huge winner! The sample memory is small so pitching up vocal samples helps immensely to get them into the 4MB memory.
