Sony A7 II Overview

By B&H Photo's
Sony a7 II Mirrorless Camera
Full-Frame Alpha Stabilized
Sony has taken their line of full-frame cameras to the next level with the a7 II Mirrorless Camera, which features 5-axis SteadyShot INSIDE image stabilization with 4.5 stops of compensation. Operation of the 24.3-megapixel series has been streamlined with a redesigned grip, shutter release button, and customizable controls; the a7 II also features a moisture- and dust-resistant design with a magnesium alloy body and a more robust lens mount. And, with refined algorithms and better utilization of the BIONZ X image processor, the a7 II has an enhanced Fast Hybrid AF system that is about 30% faster than the previous model along with a 5 fps burst rate with continuous autofocus.
Full-Frame Sensor, BIONZ X Processor, and Stabilization
Incorporated into the a7 II's redesigned body is a full-frame 24.3MP Exmor CMOS sensor, which offers a wide dynamic range with minimal noise and rich, subtle gradations. The sensor also offers an ISO range of 100-51,200 which can be expanded down to ISO 50. Coupled with the BIONZ X processor, this camera also supports fluid performance for high-speed shooting applications, including the ability to shoot continuously at up to 5 fps and record Full HD video at up to 60p
5-Axis SteadyShot INSIDE Image Stabilization
Packed into the svelte a7 II is a 5-axis SteadyShot INSIDE image stabilization system, which compensates for five types of camera shake encountered during handheld shooting of still images and video. This allows users to confidently use any lens, even adapted lenses, for critical imaging without encountering blur from camera shake. This system will compensate for approximately 4.5 stops of shutter speed for working with a huge variety of subjects.
Enhanced Fast Hybrid AF
Utilizing 117 phase-detection and 25 contrast-detection autofocus points with a wide area of coverage, the a7 II can smoothly and quickly track fast-moving subjects throughout the frame. It optimizes for both speed and accuracy with an enhanced algorithm that improves performance by about 30% when compared to previous generations. This just-developed algorithm will more accurately predict subject movement for tracking that is 1.5x more accurate. Also, Lock-on AF tracking will analyze more information from the scene to provide dramatically improved accuracy and stability and Eye AF can prioritize a subject's pupil for excellent portraits even with a shallow depth of field.
Video Recording
Full HD and XAVC S Format
Shoot Full HD 1920 x 1080 video at frame rates of 60p, 30p, and 24p with the high-bit-rate 50 Mbps XAVC S format. This results in excellent image quality with minimal noise and artifacts without requiring a large amount of disk space. Additionally, the system uses linear PCM sound for high quality audio.

When recording internally, users will record video with a 4:2:0 sampling at 8-bit, however, to even further improve image quality the a7 II has clean HDMI output for use with an external recorder. This allows users to capture 4:2:2 uncompressed video and save in an edit-ready format.
Customizable Color Profiles and S-Log2 Gamma
To make sure the a7 II is able to use its extensive dynamic range while recording video it incorporates extensive customizable color and gamma controls. Users can adjust the gamma, black level, knee, color level, and more. Also users can use the same S-Log2 Gamma Curve that is found on high end Sony Cinema cameras that squeezes up to 1300% more dynamic range into the video signal then traditional REC709, for increased post-production flexibility.
Audio Input & Headphone Jack
The a7 II features a 3.5mm microphone input jack for compatibility with external microphones. And for users needing more the a7 II is also compatible with the Sony XLR-K2M XLR Adapter for recording professional balanced XLR audio signals with phantom power and adjustable mic/line inputs. For monitoring audio the a7 II features a 3.5mm headphone jack as well as real time audio levels for a visual reference.
Body Design
Refined EVF, LCD, and Ergonomics
 • High-resolution 2.36m-dot OLED viewfinder offers a bright, clear means for eye-level viewing.
 • Rear LCD now features a higher 1.2m-dot resolution along with a versatile tilting design that moves upward 107° and downward 41° for working from high and low angles.
 • Featuring a larger, more refined grip shape, users will find the a7 II to have a more secure feel even when large lenses are mounted.
 • Shutter release button has been reshaped and moved forward for a more natural shooting position and a decrease in camera shake.
 • Button customization is available with the ability to assign any of 56 functions to any of the 10 customizable buttons for a more personalized setup.
Magnesium Alloy Construction and Robust Lens Mount
 • Well-built design includes a magnesium alloy top cover, front cover, and internal structure and the lens mount has been redesigned with greater strength and rigidity for extra security when using larger or longer lenses.
 • Improved weather sealing for greater dust and moisture resistance, providing more protection when shooting out in the elements.
 • Optical filter on the sensor has an anti-static coating and there is an anti-dust mechanism to prevent dust from adhering to the sensor.
Connectivity
Wi-Fi and NFC
Built-in Wi-Fi connectivity enables the a7 II to instantly share imagery to mobile devices for direct sharing online to social networking, via email, and to cloud storage sites. NFC (Near Field Communication) is also supported, which allows for one-touch connection between the camera and compatible mobile devices; no complex set-up is required. Once connected, the linked mobile device can also display a live view image on its screen and remotely control the camera's shutter.
Sony FE 28-70mm f/3.5-5.6 OSS Lens
A Versatile Standard
A top pick for users looking for a lightweight all-around zoom, the FE 28-70mm f/3.5-5.6 OSS Lens from Sony is a great go-to for full-frame E-mount shooters. The lens has a compact, portable design that is ideal for everyday, walkaround use and its versatile wide-angle to portrait-length range suits working with a variety of subject types.
Optical Design
 • One extra-low dispersion glass element is featured in the lens design to help reduce chromatic aberrations and color fringing for improved clarity and color neutrality.
 • Three aspherical elements are incorporated in the lens design to reduce astigmatism, field curvature, coma, and other monochromatic aberrations.
 • Rounded seven-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality when employing selective focus techniques.
Autofocus, Image Stabilization, and Design
 • An internal focus mechanism and linear motor contribute to faster, more responsive system and easier handling.
 • Optical SteadyShot image stabilization helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake for sharper imagery when shooting handheld with slower shutter speeds. This stabilization system can be combined with select camera's sensor-shift type image stabilization for more effective control of camera blur.
 • Dust- and moisture-sealed design better permits working in inclement conditions and rubberized control rings benefit handling in colder temperatures.

Sony a7II Mirrorless Camera Kit Review

Rated 5 out of 5

For this to be a kit lens it is very good especially with the variety of shooting that can be done. As much as there are higher models for this camera, the only main difference is the 4k quality. Other then that this camera can be used for a variety of photography from studio to concert.

Great all-around camera

This is a fantastic deal. The price point is unbeatable for the features that come packed in a small camera. The autofocus could use a slight improvement, but it's old so I can understand the limitations. In-body stabilization works great. Picture sharpness and quality is also superb.

Older but Affordable

Yes this camera is older than others out now and that's a given. The nice thing about cameras now days it they're are starting be more like film cameras used to be. There was always a newer, brighter, more advanced film camera coming out year after year, but the older cameras where just as fictional as the newest ones were at a fraction of the cost. They had been tried tested and thrown together kits, made affordable due to the more expensive shinier camera. They become the everyone's camera, the good old trusted it gonna get the job done and you'll be happy with it. Looking at for the reasons I personally bought it, this a great camera for people with weight restrictions and/or neck mobility issues like a DSLR might, without restricting the use as much as a point shoot camera.

You Get What You Pay For (and then some)!

If you've done any research before buying your camera you know what you're buying. A full frame reliable Sony Camera, capable of giving you high quality images. And they threw in a free camera bag and SD card. Can't really ask for more. 4 stars because I;'ve only had it for a short time. But no problems since.

Takes getting used to

Coming from my trusty, albeit crop sensor, Nikon D5100, I really have yet to perfect the mirrorless experience. As time goes on, I'm getting used to it. The good news, is that the files it gives you are huge. Full of detail, and large. The downside is, you have to take time to make sure your settings are correct before you shoot, our else your picture is shot, unlike the Nikon, which is much easier to quickly check.

How does the A7II compare with the Nikon D7200? I take mostly landscapes and nature shots but I don't do a lot of video recording.
Asked by: Quang
The A7II is a Full Frame Camera, compared to APS-C on the D7200. For landscapes the larger sensor will allow for wider shots.

question

Video length
Asked by: Khanh Duy
Sony states on page 88 of the instruction manual that continuous video shooting is possible for approximately 29 minutes (a product specification limit). The table on page 88 lists the estimated length or recording that may be captured on a memory card of a given size, but the longest time for a single clip would be 29 minutes. Pages 88-90 lists more information referring to recording times.

Do you offer extended warranty for purchase?
Asked by: John
They offer some really good plans from $100 to $400 or so. I believe it’s through square trade. If you break it they will fix it and send it back. The more expensive plans will overnight it back and forth from anywhere in the world the $100 plan I purchased is 3 years of fixing it if it breaks but it’s US only and slower turn around time. For professionals that need the repair quick the $300 plan is best.

question

which lens adaptor do you recommend for using Nikon lens on to the Sony Alpha 7II body? thank you
Asked by: Anonymous
I'm using the Fotodiox Pro and it focuses faster than the Metabones which I also tested. But the Metabones firmware can be updated in the future via USB and the Fotodiox can't. Still for 1/4 the price I felt it was worth it, especially since it focuses faster.

question

Does the A7II have full pixel readout video like the A7SI & II? If not how would the pixel binning compare to the cams with full pixel readout?
Asked by: Denis T.
Unfortunately it does not have the full pixel readout or 4K HDMI output of the A7S. The pixel binning method employed on the sensor seems similar to before, which results in occasional aliasing and some moire too.
