Panasonic DMC-TS30 Overview

  • 1Description

The blue Lumix DMC-TS30 Digital Camera from Panasonic is a compact "tough" camera that can shoot photos and HD video in extreme cold temperatures underwater or on dry land. The TS30 is dust, water, shock, and freezeproof. Its 16.1MP CCD sensor provides clear, well-defined images even in low light and a Lumix DC Vario lens offers focal lengths from wide-angle to telephoto at 25-100mm in 35mm format. An 8x Intelligent Zoom function offers even longer digital zoom reach when needed. 23-area Autofocus and Quick AF combine to provide fast and accurate autofocus.

The camera can shoot HD 720p video and has a dedicated one-touch video button. Shooting a still photo while shooting video is supported and MEGA O.I.S. (Optical Image Stabilization) compensates for camera shake in photo and video, offering clear images in low light or when shooting at telephoto lengths. Intelligent Auto Mode is available for point and shoot capability with all assistive features engaged and Scene Mode provides predefined settings to shoot certain types of scenes (Sunset, Starry Sky, Night Scenery, etc.) with the ideal camera adjustments. The camera also can shoot up to eight frames per second in High-speed Burst Mode, shoot time-lapse images and offers Creative Control Mode in both standard and panorama dimensions so you can add specialized effects to your photos. A 2.7" TFT LCD screen with 230k-dot resolution provides composition and playback viewing.

The "tough" features of the TS30 allow it to go underwater to a depth of 26'. It is also shockproof from a drop height of 5', freezeproof to a temperature of 14°F, and dust and sand proof. When dirty, the camera can be easily washed off with water. The TS30 features Advanced Underwater Mode which compensates for the red colors often lost when shooting underwater providing more natural looking underwater images. The camera also contains a continuous torch light when shooting video underwater or at night and it can be simply used as a flashlight when you are not shooting.

Creative Control / Creative Retouch
Creative Control in recording mode and Creative Retouch in playback mode give you the power to turn ordinary situations into highly expressive images. Creative Effects include: Expressive, Retro, High Key, Low Key, Sepia, Dynamic Monochrome, Impressive Art, High Dynamic, Cross Process, Toy Effect, Miniature Effect, One Point Color.
Creative Panorama
With the Creative Panorama function, you can shoot and overlay consecutive horizontal and vertical images, then add filter effects with Creative Controls.
Underwater Shots
The red color reproduction of Advanced Underwater Mode compensates for the red tones lost in underwater shooting to create more natural underwater images. Additional action modes include Sports, Snow, and Beach and Snorkeling.
MEGA O.I.S. (Optical Image Stabilizer)
MEGA O.I.S. automatically compensates for blurring caused by hand-shake. Even slight hand-shake movement is detected instantly by a sampling frequency of 4,000 times per second to produce sharp, clear images.
MP4 HD Video Recording
Recording dynamic MP4 HD video in 1280 x 720p starts with the simple push of an independent motion picture button, and you can switch from video to photo shooting and back again instantly.
Time Lapse Shooting
Position the camera to record stationary observation for flowers coming into bloom, scudding clouds and other subjects. A series of successive images can be combined in-camera to produce time-lapse video.
Torch Light
A built-in torch light helps record videos in dusky underwater environments or in low-light situations. When camera functions are inactive, you can turn the light on to illuminate subjects.
220MB Built-in Memory
When the camera's SD card is full, built-in memory automatically provides 220MB of additional storage, enough for up to 34 images.

    Panasonic DMC-TS30 Reviews

Lumix DMC-TS30 Digital Camera (Blue) is rated 3.9 out of 5 by 51.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great compact sports camera This camera was a replacement for a Nikon Coolpix AW that needed repair twice and finally packed it in. The Panasonic Lumix is considerably less expensive, but performs as well or better. It goes in the pocket on trips and give respectable performance as a point and shoot. The panorama function, as well as some special setting like food, night building, night portrait, and underwater are easy to use and work very well. The limits of the zoom, no view finder (the LCD screen can be tough to use in really bright conditions), and lack of ability to manipulate manual settings completely remind you it's not a DSLR, but for 98% of photos it does a great job. For the price, this is a great vacation camera which can go right along with you on water activities.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Intelligent Auto (IA) gives very good results & is easy I have had mine for over a year & leave it on IA Intelligent Auto mode most of the time. This lets you zoom in nicely without losing much quality. The video is a little disappointing being only HD instead of full HD. The video is steadier but worse quality than I get with a S3 Galaxy. The photos about the same. Having the internal zoom means you don't have to worry about bumping the zoom lens. In bright conditions the photos look really excellent to me. It's not a fast camera of course & its burst mode is way worse than a smart phone. Overall I am very happy with it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very good value for the price. Of course this isn't a professional underwater camera, but for a hobbyist or vacationer on the water, it takes excellent quality photo and video, and has surprisingly good audio quality as well. I leave my expensive nikon at home and carry this one in my pocket and have been saltwater snorkeling several times. Never had a problem, and have been very happy with the images. One really impressive feature (that I do NOT recommend testing) is that if the safety lock disengages, the smaller latch will maintain water proof. Somehow while digging it out of my pocket underwater, I discovered that the safety lock had been opened for some time. Fearing the worse, I was happily surprised that the small latch kept water out the whole time, even down to about 12 feet. For the money, I have been very, very happy with this camera.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Ok inexpensive camera I bought the camera to replace an Olympus tough guard Both my prior olympus' screens blew out between 3-5 years so I thought I'd try something new and less expensive I set the camera up to autofocus auto select mode I paddled 3 days at the okeefenokee swamp and took 387 photos The biggest complaint is there is no lens cover which means: pro it boots up way faster Cons water moisture on the lens causes blurry photos I seldom had this problem with the Olympus Bring a lens coth or two A lot of photos were overexposed Overall I am glad I chose this since waterproof cameras especially exposed to saltwater don't last too long I view the camera as a way to remember the adventure which it served it's purpose The Olympus were about twice as expensive so it makes sense they take better photos

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy to use The TS30 is easy to use and creates sharp bright pictures. I was able to take close up's of ants in a rotting tree. This was a pleasant surprise in such a low priced camera. It's portability means that I have a camera on my belt and ready at any time. No more lament about the missed shot or worry about the camera getting wet. Everyone needs this Lumix. Jude Tomaski Gainesville, Florida

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best all around in this price range The TS30 produces high quality images, has a wider view than most, and is a perfect tough camera to throw in a pocket and go have fun outdoors. It has survived freezing temps, being dunked in the pool, and always shoots great pictures. No issues to be found, simple menus, easy to hand over to a kid even to shoot some video or stills on a trip. If i had to wish it would be for a optical viewfinder for bright days when you have to shade the screen to see your shot, but that would be a camera that costs much more!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Very compact and lot of camera for the price I did not believe that such a small sensor as 4.7 x 6.2 mm with 16 Mpixels (3456 by 4608) could be very good. The TS30 proved me wrong, or at least not entirely right. Out of the box, the camera can produce decent, if not great, photos at low ISO ratings. The big surprise was that post processing with a high pass filter using Photoshop or the sort can do wonders to improve the quality of the images, at least up to ISO 400. I was not prepared for this level of performance, at least at the low ISOs. These photos are quite decent. Make no mistake, however, size does matter, and the TS30 cannot really compete with a 4/3 format or larger sensor. If you are somewhat demanding of image quality, you will not be happy unless you are prepared to do some post processing of your best shots. If you are less demanding, the out of the box performance will be satisfactory. I would give the camera 4 stars if the user is willing to do some post processing but only 3 stars otherwise. Strengths Very compact Good quality central image Good range of zoom 4.5 to 18 mm (25 to 100 mm equivalent for 35 mm camera) Has 5 axis image stabilization Good controls for a general-use camera Well thought-out automatic settings Rugged - withstands MIL STD drop test Can be used on the beach or under water A lot of camera for the price Weaknesses Poor image quality at edges and corners; much radial smearing Small sensor limits optical performance. Has 16 Mpixels, but image quality cannot match a 4/3 or larger sensor 16 Mpixel camera, even at the center. Very aggressive noise reduction rapidly degrades resolution and makes ISO 400 on the edge; ISO 800 is not very good; ISO 1600 is only for desperation and/or very small pictures (e.g. 1 Mpixel) Needs post processing of images Poor shadow detail at ISO 1600 Not so good in weak light, because of small lens aperture, although camera does have image stabilization Difficult to see the screen to compose in sunlight, even standing in the shadow

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Surprising Little Camera I bought this camera as a "fun" point and shoot. The quality of the still and video has been remarkable. On one outing recently, this was the only camera I had to video a surprise cannon shot exercise. Hand held (not even a monopod), the video had movement, but picture quality and audio? (on a windy day) were surprisingly good. The link to this video is?https://youtu.be/t1jwmXDtcf8. All of the cannon firing? sequence and the stills were? done with the Lumix DMC-TS30.? (Other video was with a Sony RX-100 IV and Sony Action Cam) Battery life is excellent , the menu is intuitive and the controls are easy for my clumsy hands to use. And, gosh, the thing is waterproof to 25 feet and easily fits into a shirt pocket. I would have much preferred to have had my regular full frame camera on tripod for this video, but heck, this is an example of what can be done with this little pocket point and shoot camera on the fly. This does not have a viewfinder which I like in bright light, but the screen is good enough for framing. Not too bad for a carry along hobby point and shoot.

    question

    What is in the box?
    Asked by: pamela T.
If I recall the only extra thing you will need to provide that is not in the box is a memory card. I bought it on a holiday sale a year ago so one may have been included as a special deal. I did buy an extra battery and a wrist float strap as extra accessories but no case as it was bought as gift for a backpacking / outdoorsy relative.
