Rogue Photographic Design ROGUEXLPRO2 Overview

  • 1Description

Take control over your shoe-mount flash unit with the FlashBender 2 XL Pro Lighting System from Rogue. The system features the FlashBender 2 XL Pro Reflector photographers can shape and bounce the light from your speedlight by adjusting the positioning of the reflector itself. It easily attaches to most flash heads through a belt and buckle system. The entire system will fit into a 15" laptop compartment, or fold flat for storage.

Alongside this reflector are some accessories to further control the light from your flash unit. The Strip Grid utilizes diffusion material and a fabric grid that will produce a narrower light pattern. This setup also prevents light spill with a bottom panel. The Soft Box Diffuser attachment adds a front diffusion panel to soften light while reducing contrast and specular highlights. This also makes the light more directional than the base reflector, eliminating having to bounce and reflect light.

Included with the kit is a travel bag that will hold all of the items bundled in this system. In addition, the reflector has been redesigned with custom fabric to make it 20% lighter than its predecessor for improved portability.

Fits flashes with a head circumference measuring from 8-9.75"

    Rogue Photographic Design ROGUEXLPRO2 Reviews

FlashBender 2 XL Pro Lighting System is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 44.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great accessory to carry This is definitely a permanent part of my photo bag items. Upon arrival, I immediately had to take some test shots to see if its as good as they boast it to be. I shot straight flash, dome diffuser, pocket bouncer, flashbender reflector, flashbender softbox & flashbender grid. The flashbender rigs provided the best results. Softer light with little loss, spread out over larger area. BTW, the subjects were head shots and close up photos. It was very easy to attach to the speedlight. My only dislike was the price. Since you're buying the whole combo, I wish there would be a price reduction. If it wasn't for that, this deserves a 5 star rating. My other concern is how well it will hold up after heavy use and will it require frequent cleaning. The material seems like it can get dirty easily.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Small Size, Big Results Needed to find a solution to lighting taking up big space due to light mods and such. These seemed to help fill the solution to downsize space without giving up quality of light. Easy to set up, quick to make adjustments. The quality seems good and should last for some time. Should encourage you to shoot on locations more. I recommend getting a couple of these to start and see if it is a good solution for you. Between these with a couple of speed lights and going back to full size studio lights when you have the space, I think I'll be all set. As usual, B&H comes thru with exemplary customer service and everything in stock.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good for off camera flashes This has been pretty good so far for the limited amount of times that I have used it.? Still figuring out if I want a second one or not.? This IS NOT for on camera use.? It's big, heavy, and would be quite cumbersome for me on camera.? It obviously does not? diffuse the light as well as an umbrella or soft box, but it still does do a good job.? I am using a Godox V860II and a Flashpoint Zoom R2 with the FlashBender and the weight of it will cause the these flash heads to go to 90 degrees if you tilt the head much past 30 degrees.? Outside with a breeze and these two model speedlights would be going to 90 degrees easily.? What I did to remedy this problem was mount the product on the speedlight facing the opposite direction that the flash angles, put the whole thing on an adjustable umbrella/ shoe bracket and put it on a light stand.? I was able to control the angle of the light throw via the umbrella bracket. This product is quite portable.? breaking down is nothing more than folding the FlashBender itself in half lengthwise with the diffusion and strip panels folded up and put in fold of the main unit.? Slide it into the included pouch.? That's it.? Very nice for the backpacking and urbexing that I do. I have other Rogue products and like them a lot.? They all are a bit pricey (this particular one being quite pricey for what it is), but they are quality products that work well.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great flash accesory I really like the rim light grid accessory. Great for back lighting and rim lighting. The diffuser takes up very little space in my bag and goes on and off with ease. Controls shape of light very well. This unit is kind of expensive for what it is.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great but heavy Great light modifier but a little heavy for my flashes. I have a Canon 580EXII and the head tilt wont handle the weight midway. I also have a Nissin Di700A for Sony, with plastic hot shoe that broke within 20 minutes of use with this accessory.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Remarkably versatile tool that packs very easily With the 600EX II-RT/ST-E3-RT flash system and flash accessories like this, my travel kit has gotten much, much lighter. I haven't packed my studio strobes in months. The XL is incredibly versatile. It works great as a smaller strip light (hair light, rim light, etc.), is a really nice fill light with it's large surface area, and even works surprisingly well as a smallish soft box with the diffuser attached. It's quickly become one of my go-to modifiers. A couple of things to keep in mind if you're considering the XL... 1. It is NOT for use with on-camera flash. It's too big, too heavy, and too cumbersome to be used on-camera. I suppose you could use it on-camera in a pinch, but that way lies misery. It's a modifier for off-camera flash. 2. Your Speedlite MUST be kept in the upright, locked position. You can't tilt the Speedlite head forward as it will then be unable to support the weight of the XL and simply fall all the way forward. This is the source of all those it's too heavy for a Speedlite reviews. This isn't really a drawback since you're using it off-camera anyway. Just mount the Speedlite to a cold-shoe umbrella bracket and you've got complete flexibility and control of the Speedlite and FlashBender. I throw mine on a boom arm and use it regularly for overhead hair/rim lighting. With those two points in mind, I highly recommend this modifier.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Bend this! This Flash Bender is pretty cool, The reflector is the base to the soft box and the grid. Everything velcro's together with out too much hassle and really changes the light from my SB-800 Would best be used on a light stand because its pretty big. I want to get a smaller reflector too for on camera flash. Good product.

I'm a canon guy but it fits every flash I have because of the adjustable strap so i'd say yes.

Without using the grid it is a 12 x 13 soft box. Using the grid it becomes a 6 x 13 strip light.

    question

the description of the product says that it's lightweight. however, some of the reviews say that it's too heavy for their speedlight, even a particular canon speed light. what's the verdict? is it too heavy? was the earlier version the heavier one?
    Asked by: Anonymous
I use this with Canon Speedlites, in particular the 600EX II-RT. No, this is not too heavy. If you follow the directions included with the XL, and keep the Speedlite in the upright, locked, position, there are no issues. To tilt it forward, see my next paragraph.Keep in mind, this is NOT designed as an on-camera flash accessory. It's far to large and cumbersome for such use. It's to be used off camera on a light stand, and there it excels. Since the flash head must remain in the upright, locked position, you tilt the XL forward using a light stand mount (cold-shoe umbrella mount, for example). On a mount like this, with a boom arm, it's a fantastic strip light for hair lighting in portraits, for example.

    question

How many stops of light is lost with the reflector? and with the Diffuser on??
    Asked by: JOSEPH
Sorry i do not know exactly how many stops of light are lost. However in my experience while you do loose some light with the diffuser and reflector they do a great job of softening and spreading the light. I find them to give a much more natural and flattering look to portraits.

    question

How does the 2 XL compare to the large, and can you also fold it into a snoot?
    Asked by: Ivo
The XL Pro Reflector is the largest FlashBender with a reflective surface that measures 12 x13 , compared to the Large Reflector's 9 x10 reflective surface. The XL Pro is packaged in a kit that also includes a carry bag and two additional diffuser attachments that allow you to modify the reflector into either a strip grid, or a soft box. You can shape the XL Pro Reflector into a large snoot, however due to the way most people use snoots we believe the Small Reflector and Large Reflector are better suited for this application. If you have any other questions please contact us directly. question

Is this large enough for a full length portrait?
    Asked by: David
A lot depends on the venue and circumstances. I purchased this device for garden wedding or studio social portraits of no more than 2 persons and no more than half length body exposures. I like the device because of the even light distribution understanding its job is to function as a fill in. Since it is light weight I can carry it in my case if I travel and does not need a long winded explanation to the TSA inspectors.I have not tried a full length portrait although I feel that it may not work as well as equipment designed for that job. Considering the price and assuming you may have a few $$$ to spare it may be worth the purchase just to experiment and see if it works for your application. Considering what Photoshop can accomplish maybe a little computer magic just may do the trick. As with all photography there is no one best way to solve a problem. I wish you well.-Phil

    question

Is this a new item? More importantly, is it made in the manner of the new L versions that your site describes as 20 percent lighter than older models?
    Asked by: April W.
Hi April -- this is an update of the old XL. I do not have experience with the old one, but this one is fairly light and works well for me.
