Profoto B2 250 Air overview

  • 1Description

This B2 250 Air TTL Location Kit from Profoto is an ideal way to get into the game-changing battery-powered flash system that includes the B2 250 AirTTL Power Pack, Flash Head and tailor made OCF (Off-Camera Flash) accessories. The kit includes the pack, 2 batteries, charger, 2 B2 flash heads, padded Location Bag and a Carrying Bag with shoulder strap. Complete the kit and get full wireless TTL operation with the purchase of a dedicated AirRemote TTL transceiver for your Canon or Nikon Camera.

Intended for the road, the B2 250 AirTTL Power Pack measures 6.3 x 3.1 x 6.7" and weighs in at just 2.2 lb with its Li-Ion battery. The B2's twin outlets each have a dedicated thumbwheel that allows the pack's 250Ws of power to be distributed asymmetrically over a 9-stop range in full or 1/10 steps.

The digital LED screen that displays the power settings is also the key to the pack's many capabilities. The B2 boasts recycling times from 0.03 - 1.35 sec. and an action-stopping flash duration of 1/1,000 sec. There's also a Freeze Mode that selects a flash duration of 1/15,000 sec. at lower power settings - fast enough to "freeze" water droplets, spray and splashes. Bursts of up to 20 frames per second are possible while High Speed Sync allows shutter sync speeds from 1/4,000 - 1/8,000 sec., giving you wide ambient light control options. The pack's Li-Ion battery can be charged in or out of the pack, and will give you up to 215 full-power flashes on a 45-60 minute charge from a multi-voltage 2.8A battery charger or a trickle charge from an optional car charger.

At 1.5 lb, the sturdily-built B2 Off-Camera Flash Head measures 4" long, has a 3.9" diameter and fits in the palm of your hand. A barely-visible umbrella channel runs through the top of the head while its tethered 6.5' head cable can be lengthened with a 9.8' extension for large groups or for hanging in hard-to-reach places. An included stand or pole-mount with a ratcheting handle can be removed for mounting to a flash bracket. The B2's flashtube and 50W halogen-equivalent LED modeling lamp and flash tube are protected by a frosted glass plate while its 3.9" diameter housing accepts a line of optional accessories that includes OCF-tailored softboxes, barndoors, a snoot, and a grid set. They can also be used on the B1 battery-powered monolight.

Profoto B2 250 Air reviews

B2 250 Air TTL Location Kit is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 39.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from AMAZING What a unit!! Battery never runs outs. Easy controls. Powerful enough for location and then some. Flash duration SHORT. I froze airborne dancers. Having a small head on a stand is the ticket. I work alone. Imagine that? The videos show photo with assistants. Great. I've been doing location and studio work for 35 years and now enjoy less hassle, no more heavy monobloc heads. The carry kit is fast to set up and put up. I used the modeling lights a few times but honestly in a well lit room they are not needed, unless you are uncertain where to put your lights. 200s with two heads? need more f stop shoot iso 400. There is no unit that can do all. This is close enough. Pricey? Built like a tank. All tight and right. Worth every penny. Period.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome. Quick working. Sent in. Got back super quick. This is a killer tool. Killer. Smokes several speedlights and super easy to travel with. Not real good w anything larger than a 3' softbox but the smaller 4' strip box works well. For studio I purchased the larger 500watt B1 and 1,000 watt D2 and this gives you a nice range of power. If you're on a budget the D1 500 or 1000's are awesome too. ALL the light modifiers that work on the B2 kit can be used on the larger powered B1, D1, D2 etc. however they are designed for the smaller power of the B2's. Profoto has a killer youtube channel w the best resources out there. Had a power back issue w the B2 unit, sent it in and got it back in 1 week. Service is awesome!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Just keeps getting better I have been shopping for the right artificial lighting product for a few years and never saw a product that just seemed to fit with the way I shoot and my resources. Many studio lights are too bulky for me to store easily and a light that requires a full size C stand make storage and transport even more difficult. After working with the staff at B&H for about an hour and listening in as the Profoto rep helped someone who was obviously a big spender, I knew I had found the system that is right for me now. Easy to set up and tear down. Can replace a Quantum package if paired with a Promedia Gear Boomerang Bracket. I went whole hog but if you intend to but the B2s on stands by the extension cables. Also the light modifiers made for the OCF system are lightweight and high quality. So far I have only shot inside with them but with the warm weather I will be shooting outside as well. I also picked up a couple of spare batteries.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Love at First Light I've just had my kit for a couple of days but I've had a chance to try them out in a couple of different situations. I had a small arts event yesterday so I was able to try one light on a bracket. I should say I wanted these to replace my Quantum gear, which is complicated and kind of twitchy with a lot of little parts to put together. I was very happy with how quickly and easily I was able to pop this on a bracket and start shooting, getting great exposures every time. The kit bag itself is light and compact. Portability was important to me as I am not getting any younger. Today I tried it on location with a model and ran it through several different configurations with the @' OCF Octa, bare headed, grids, etc. and was blown away by the beautiful quality of the light. The TTL worked flawlessly. In manual mode, it was a piece of cake to make the power adjustments. The controls are very intuitive and opposed to the QFlash system which requires hours of study and practice to figure out the simplest changes. HSS worked great right out of the box. I shot some with the Octabox and some bare headed and loved both looks. The two things I was not thrilled about are: the umbrella slot on the B-2 heads are too smally for the shoot through umbrella I liked to use on my Quantum. My other issue is the cable lengths. The second light is essentially useless except in a clamshell setup. You can't separate them enough to do anything else with it. That's almost criminal. It's ok on one light since you can always hang the pack on your assistant or a light stand, but even that's not long enough to set the pack on the ground if you extent the lightstand where you really need it. So just know that you will need to shell out another $200 for the extension cable before you can really get any use out of the second light. This is why I only gave this product 4 starts. If not for this it would be 5+++

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing These are amazing, small, powerful lights. Worth the profoto price if you can afford it and way less cumbersome than dealing with a bunch of canon 600's or 580's! Batteries do run fast if you're actually trying to do a studio set up somewhere so you need extra batteries on hand or an outlet. The bonus is that the batteries charge super fast.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The B2 Kit is Awesome, should have purchased it first. Finally ! the perfect On-location lighting Kit | though expensive! It is SO worth it. I am so disappointed that I didn't choose this kit as my first choice over the B1 solution. I could have saved myself a lot of time and money experimenting with cheaper less efficient systems. I love this system, it is small and compact, flexible and portable. Wireless and compatible with my primary Canon gear, and even when TTL is not available with my Sony gear the Profoto Air Remote works GREAT! and all the other features are still available. Oh and don't let me forget FAST, the recycle time is amazing. The cost of the extension cord is a bummer, so I will purchase an additional pack and battery for additional convenience Thanks Profoto.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Worth It Bought the B2 Location Kit to supplement my two B1s. Expensive, but they work as advertised and integrate with the B1s/TTL perfectly. The extension cord, which is another $200.00, is necessary. Battery recharges very fast. Carrying case is well made and functional. If you can get past the price, well worth the investment.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Finally have the ProFoto durability for travel and heavy use We highly recommend this ProFoto B2. The light weight & solid build with the endurance for our heavy travel. We've used it in both TTL (w/Air Remote) and Manual mode. Most important is it functions when we get to the job! So many times we've arrived with faulty equipment, UGH! Never again will that happen. We've owned four different Einsteins and they are fantastic when they work. I personally need a more durable product. The Canon Speedlite 600EX-RT Essential Two Flash Wireless Kit is really good for travel but that set-up doesn't recycle fast enoughl. Great pics if you give them plenty of time to recycle but certainly not a PRO solution for taking lot's of pics at our assignments. Heads up regarding the latest HSS firmware for MAC users. Go to ProFoto website and register your products so you can get these updates otherwise you will not have the high-speed sync. I uploaded the firmware update(s) into my B2 Power Pack and Air Remote using OS 10.9- (Mavericks). Using 10.10- (Yosemite) will not work yet as of 6/3/15. It took me a while to figure this out. I'm an pro action-sports photog and instructor(s) so using the High-Speed Sync is a must. We bought a car-charger, two of the extension cables (expensive!), two extra batteries, two soft boxes w/speed-rings & an extra AirTTL so both me and a 2nd photog can shoot at the same time which we haven't tried yet. BTW according to the instructions you can charge to the battery while using the B2. You can't do that with the B1 500. Interesting feature. The crystal ball says having the B1 500 in a year as an add-on to this kit is very likely ;) Rick & Josh
