Blackmagic Design URSA Mini 4K overview

  • 1Description

Now in a smaller, more handheld-friendly form factor, the URSA Mini 4K Digital Cinema Camera from Blackmagic Design can record cinematic images with its Super-35mm 4K, global-shutter sensor with 12 stops of dynamic range. The ergonomic body design is balanced and can be used for many different styles of filmmaking. The EF-Mount is compatible with a plethora of popular lenses, opening different aesthetic options. A rosette on the side of the camera accepts the included side handle, which can control Start/Stop via a LANC connection.

To produce cinematic images, the URSA Mini can record raw sensor data in the CinemaDNG format onto CFast 2.0 memory cards at up to 60 fps. The raw files preserve the full dynamic range and color tonality output from the sensor, so you can have greater control over the look in post-production. However, data-heavy uncompressed raw files aren't always easy to deal with on set, so in addition to uncompressed raw recording, the 4K URSA Mini provides compressed raw recording at a 3:1 compression ratio to save space while retaining post-production flexibility.

The URSA Mini also records UHD 4K (3840 x 2160) and 1080p video using ready-to-edit ProRes files in many different flavors within the 444 and 422 chroma subsampling variations, depending on your workflow. Starting at the high end, UHD footage can be recorded in ProRes 444 XQ at a rate of 312.5 MB/s all the way down to 1080p in a ProRes 422 Proxy file coming in at a relatively paltry 5.6 MB/s data rate. Since the camera accepts dual CFast cards, you can record for long periods of time by having the camera switch cards when one is full.

Power for the URSA Mini can be supplied via a 4-pin XLR jack at the rear of the camera. With an optional plate, the URSA will accept professional V-Mount or Gold Mount batteries on the back. Once connected to power, the URSA can even distribute power through a second 4-pin XLR jack.

Camera Features

Compact Handheld Design
Sizing down the familiar URSA shape enables the URSA Mini to fit into feature and indie film, broadcast TV, commercial, documentary, and music video workflows with crews of any size. Using the optional shoulder mount with a built-in quick release plate, the URSA Mini can go from handheld to shoulder to tripod in a matter of seconds. Despite its size, the URSA Mini still fits essential I/O for professional workflows.

The body is made from magnesium alloys to keep the URSA Mini lightweight at 5 lb. To make the camera more acceptable for handheld usage, a side handle is included. With the optional shoulder mount, the handle can be extended off the side of the camera to be used in a doc-style configuration.
4K Super-35mm Sensor
The 3840 x 2160 native resolution censor uses a global shutter so that it will be free from the motion artifacts and flash banding experienced with rolling shutter sensors. It features a wide, 12-stop dynamic range to help ensure detail is retained even in the shadow and highlight portions of the image, and to provide more information to work with in color correction. The sensor size makes it possible to recreate the shallow depth of field look popularly associated with film. At this size, it is slightly larger than the APS-C DSLR format, and will accommodate most lenses that cover an APS-C image circle
Touchscreen Control
In addition to more traditional button-driven menus, the URSA Mini features a foldout 5-inch, 1920 x 1080 resolution capacitive touchscreen LCD monitor. Using the easily navigable touchscreen menu, you can see and change all camera settings, view timecode, histograms, audio levels, and focus peaking, as well as add shot metadata with an on-screen keyboard.
Professional Connections
The URSA Mini features multiple connections such as 12G-SDI out, HD-SDI monitoring out, two LANC inputs, balanced XLR audio with phantom power, timecode-in, and reference input. On the front right side of the camera, the 4-pin XLR DC and HD-SDI monitoring output are located in the perfect position for connecting to an optional viewfinder or on set monitor. The 12G-SDI output handles up to 2160p60 using a single BNC cable, and switches to 6G-SDI or HD-SDI depending on the shooting format.
Quality Sound Recording
With high-quality built-in microphones and professional audio recording features, you don't have to carry around extra sound equipment. You can use the built-in stereo microphone to record natural location sound or connect professional microphones using the two XLR mic inputs. The XLR connections have 48V of switchable phantom power, so you can plug shotgun or wireless lavalier mics for capturing more detail. You can quickly adjust levels using the physical knobs, while monitoring the audio using the onscreen audio meters and headphones.
Multiple Power Options
On its own, the URSA Mini includes a 4-pin XLR industry standard power connector that works with 12 to 30V external power supplies. That means it's easy to use the camera with existing professional power supplies and batteries. The camera uses the same battery power connector and mounting points on the rear of the camera as used on the original URSA, so you can use the same range of battery plates from a wide range of manufacturers such as IDX, Frezzi, Anton Bauer, and more. You can also add the optional Blackmagic URSA V-Lock Battery Plate for using popular V-Mount batteries.
DaVinci Resolve Software Included
Included with the camera is a DaVinci Resolve USB dongle, which contains a license to unlock the full feature-set within the software. The full version of DaVinci Resolve is compatible with Mac and Windows, and can be used for editing, color grading, media management, mastering, and delivery. DaVinci Resolve can easily handle the 12-bit log RAW images from URSA Mini so you can take advantage of the URSA Mini's amazing image quality and wide dynamic range. DaVinci Resolve features advanced, multi-layer timeline editing with powerful trimming tools, along with the industry's leading suite of creative grading tools

Blackmagic Design URSA Mini 4K reviews

URSA Mini 4K Digital Cinema Camera (EF-Mount) is rated 3.2 out of 5 by 82.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Excellent camera for the price Although I did not end up keeping this camera, it is a fantastic camera for the price. I needed something that was run and gun. I already own the full size URSA, which I use for interviews in the studio. It is much more portable than the larger URSA. My decision was based on the Cfast media option mostly. I have had some problems with Cfast and I feel more secure with the SD cards honestly. Also, my camera had issues with blacks which would flash, could be a rolling shutter issue. I have owned a Red camera and this produces the same quality I believe. If you need a Cinema camera this is the best value. With the right lens and enough lighting you cannot beat this camera.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Random Horizontal Noise I was so excited to receive this camera after 5 months wait. The build quality is great! Soon, I noticed the horizontal noise in the video, both in raw or prores. The horizontal noise I saw is not the white noise you normally see in a low light situation. They are lines, and no way to get rid in the post. (De-noise will also degrade the quality of the video.) A camera reboot will make the horizontal noise goes away, however, it comes back again randomly when you power on next time. I contacted BMD, and sent them original DNG files as requested. They asked me to send the camera back, and send me a new one. The whole RMA process is fast. after 5 days, I got a new URSA Mini 4K. Same problem as the first one. I contacted the BMD again. They told me that this issue is known, and asked me to wait for the firmware update.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The more we use it, the more we like it. There is no benefit in repeating the praises or countering the criticisms of this machine. Used with the right lenses and the right format settings, this camera has done everything we ask of it. Our lenses are Canon Cine 24 & 35 1.4's, and Canon DSLR EF USM 1.4-1.5 lenses in 16, 24, and 35mm. We have never had to shoot above the the cameras 400 default, whether we are lighting or using only ambient. No issues with noise or horizontal banding and the global shutter is certainly a noticeable plus. For us, the camera's high performance has been a result of the right combination of camera, lens and experienced operator.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Horrible, Horrible noise! Do not buy yet. Not ready. Please understand. I am an audio engineer, new to video. But I have had fantastic results with the BMPC,BMCC, and the pocket camera. All have made beautiful product for me. I still own the Cinema and the Production Camera with a set of Rokinon lens. So was very excited to purchase the Ursa Mini. Shot my test footage outdoors. more than enough light and got horrible mosey footage back from my ursa mini. I am sad to say i must return the camera and the cast card and the cast reader and the gold mount plate and the 2 gold mount batteries. Sony here i come!. Still will shoot with my Cinema cameras. But i will wait till Black Magic works out the kinks in their new line up.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Amazing performance for the price I use the 4K EF for corporate work, commercials and short films. The image is great and the overall ergonomics of the camera are a nice update from my previous DSLR workflow. People expecting insane low-light performance from this camera are naive or uninformed as to its best use. Blackmagic has already issued updates for this camera to address some of the issues with the initial firmware. I am a very happy customer and can strongly recommend this camera. One of my only complaints is the location of the power button for gimbal work. It's behind the LCD screen which is usually hard to reach once installed on a gimbal. I'm hoping one of the function buttons can be assigned to this in a future firmware update.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from I was expecting so much more So I knew this camera wouldn't be as good as the other cameras I own, but I thought it would be a great backup. unfortunately I was horribly wrong. the camera image isn't even usable. The noise is horrendous at low ISO (asa200) Now I thought I had a bad sensor so I exchanged it and a long two weeks later I received another. and this camera has the same issues. it needs a major firmware update or something. Pros: Build quality seems to be ok. Cons: -Noisy Image unable to correct in post due to the horrizontal lines. -Fan Noise -XLR's are extremely tight and seem like they'll break easily. -The Camera drops frames at 120fps even with approved cards. -camera will shut down at random (only happened around 4 times)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing camera! Is it the same as a RED? No. Is it worth the $3K starting price? Absolutely! I shoot in RED a lot ($13K Raven rig). On this camera you get a good dynamic range, 4K 60fps, and dual card support. A built out kit with this camera is about $6K after some lenses, batteries, and recording media. Also it's incredible that this comes with the full Resolve software. Now with its new editing capabilities it's matched with Final Cut Pro X on top of being an insane color corrector on all platforms. Will definitely be looking out for Blackmagic's future products. Next step is to get a Ronin for this beast.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Horizontal lines bug at ISO 800 I'm using the 4K EF version. As per what @sunnyspeed_studio commented, the horizontal lines were present at ISO 800, especially visible in low light situation. I tried with a fast len (50mm T1.5) and it kinda reduced the lines, but it was still visible. I'm still giving it a 5-star as the image quality at native ISO 400 is simply mind-blowing. Taken it for some outdoor ENG projects already, and the pictures blew my clients away. Do take note that during harsh sunlight you will need ND filter. 120fps was great but will only work under very good lighting condition. This is because you will have to switch the sensor to Windowed mode, which reduces the latitude. Opening the shutter to 360 will bring you more light, but you'll get a bit of motion blurring. Hopefully BMD keep up their reputation (of being quick at addressing and solving issues with their gears) and give us a firmware update soon :)
