B+W XS-Pro overview

  • 1Description

The B+W 77mm XS-Pro Kaesemann High Transmission Circular Polarizer MRC-Nano Filter helps to reduce reflections and glare by filtering out light that has become polarized due to reflection from a non-metallic surface. The light from the sun naturally becomes partially polarized due to reflecting off electrons in air molecules, causing the light to scatter into what appears as haze. A polarizing filter arranges, and filters, this directionally polarized light perpendicularly to the reflected light, allowing for the absorption of much of this light. This results in a noticeable reduction of glare and reflections from non-metallic surfaces and an increase in the saturation of skies and foliage.

A circular polarizer only differs from a linear polarizer in that it contains a quarter wave plane in addition to the linear polarizing filter. The addition of this quarter wave plane is to circularly polarize the linearly polarized light for the use of auto focus and exposure functions. Due to how the light is broken down and filtered with a linear polarizer, auto focus and exposure accuracy become skewed during use. When the light becomes circularly polarized, it permits the use of these functions.

Kaesemann High Transmission Circular (HTC) polarizing filters are fitted with polarizing foils which provide 99.5% light transmission that are cemented between plano-parallel optical glass. The resulting sandwich is then precision-polished to achieve accurate plano-parallel surfaces. Finally, they are edge-sealed to protect the foil against humidity.

To prevent internal ghosting and reflections, each glass surface includes multiple layers of anti-reflection coating. This Multi-Resistant Coating (MRC) also offers further protection to the filter substrate and helps it to stay clean for longer than with uncoated filters. The Nano coating associated with XS-Pro filters provides an additional eighth layer over the MRC, resulting in an improved beading effect when in contact with water for greater cleaning efficiency.

B+W filters are constructed from Schott glass for increased optical clarity and color fidelity. This filter features a thin brass filter ring to minimize the potential for vignetting while enhancing durability and jamming prevention. To further reduce the possibility of vignetting when this filter is in use, the filter ring's outside diameter is slightly larger than the actual thread size. This may prevent the use of some lens manufacturer bayonet hoods.

Clears up haze in distant landscapes and provides more saturated, vivid colors.
Strongest effect when used at a 90° angle from the sun.
Circular polarizers are ideal for use with digital cameras and autofocus lenses where a linear polarizer will often disrupt auto exposure and focus features.
Multi-coated to prevent internal ghosting and reflections while providing over 99.5% light transmission.
2 to 2.8x filter factor reduces exposure by 1 to 1.5 stops.
Constructed from Schott glass for optical clarity.
Nano coating provides an improved beading effect with water for more efficient cleaning.
Plastic filter case for storage and transport.

    B+W XS-Pro reviews

77mm XS-Pro Kaesemann High Transmission Circular Polarizer MRC-Nano Filter is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 110.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from A worthy addition... I have a number of 77mm polarizers from different manufacturers. I use them on any of several Nikon lenses. Each of those polarizers has its own personality that is expressed variously in terms of its overall density (affecting ease of viewing through the finder or live view), its inherent warmth or coolness (color temperature effect on the image), its overall polarizing effect (enhanced color, diminished reflections, etc.), and its ease of attaching, adjusting, and removing. I feel this B+W has delivered a sweet spot in polarizer character and quality. I am delighted at how much light it transmits while at the same time delivering the improved image quality I expect (hope for!) from a good polarizer. I'm tempted to buy more of these B+W high-transmission products in sizes that will fit my Zeiss lenses. While this polarizer is thinner than others I own, so far I find it easy to attach, rotate, and remove from my lenses.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Save your money I got this polarizer for my Cannon 70-200, 2.8, Mark II. I have never used a polarizer before. I have taken many shots with the sun 90 degrees off the sensor plane. The light blue sky never got any bluer. The grass never got greener. The reflections in mud puddles and streams never changed any. The shine on wet leaves never diminished any. There was no reduction in haze. I could twist the filter around and around and I could tell no changes at all. All shots were taken in wet conditions from rain. I used a Canon T2-I body . I thought that maybe the camera's sensor may not be of sufficient quality to be used with this filter ?

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Filter My original 77mm Polarizing filter was by Tiffen, but it would not fit on a new Canon 100-400 mm lens with the lens hood attached. This B+W filter has a smaller external diameter and will fit with the lens hood in place, allowing me to rotate it using the window built into the lens hood. The polarizing effect of this filter is very good, and image quality is outstanding. If I am now purchasing higher quality & more expensive Canon lenses, it does not make sense to use inexpensive and lesser quality filters in front of these lenses. This B+W filter is very thin, the outer ring rotates very easily, and it only darkens one stop, much better than my original filter. The B+W MRC Nano coating should protect this filter and allow for easier cleaning. Because this filter is much thinner, it is more difficult for me to remove from the lens, and I strongly recommend purchasing a filter wrench to assist with this process. This filter comes with a hard plastic rectangular case, which does not open easily and does not fit well in my gear bag. I recommend getting a soft filter case.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Polarizer Available After researching on line I chose this Polarizer to use with my Canon 5DS and L series lenses as the best available. I know that some think that using a polarizing filter is not necessary in this age of post processing and some believe that it creates an unnatural lookin image. However, I still am of the belief that composing the best shot in camera is the best approach. Thus filter is highly effective with no noticeable color shift. Highly recommended.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent high transmission lens I like photos that look natural, with a pleasant deep blue sky but not a garish poster paint blue. This filter does the perfect job of deepening the blue of the sky just the right amount, while minimizing the loss of exposure.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good filter and Great Optically So I first bought the F-Pro KSM HTC filter. It arrived with a butter smooth rotating ring, but at the same time this ring had a lot of play perpendicular to its rotation axis. This would make popping noises when rotating or when used on some lenses with moving front elements. It also had a slight coating defect along the edge of the front glass, which I was told were finishing marks on the filter that may have also not been centred perfectly in the filter. Odd. So I decided to replace that filter with the this XS-Pro KSM HTC filter, and it's certainly better built. No loose ring, rotates smoothly, be it a little stiff for my liking but nothing worth complaining about. Optically the HTC KSM filters are great. It's slightly warm, by about 200K. I really like this for most subjects. It leaves no Magenta/Green tint, unlike my previous Hoya and Heliopan. It lets in 0.55 stops more light than my previous filters, but produces the same polarising effect. A great bonus is that these filters are super easy to clean with 99% alcohol and a cleaning cloth. Much easier than my older B+W MRC filters. Five stars to B&H Photo as always.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent filter I've really liked this filter - it doesn't have too strong a polarizing effect (just enough) and images are sharp and clear without distortion. It rotates easily, smoothly, and evenly and doesn't work its way loose. The thin profile ensures I'm not catching the filter in the corner of my photos when shooting wide. It is hard to grasp to remove, but my lens wrench works fine with it, so not really a problem.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from thin profile, easy Purchased for use with our Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM lens, the B+W 77 mm XS-Pro has a very thin profile and the outer ring turns very easily -- easily enough so that we can make use of the filter adjustment window built into the lens hood of the EF 100-400mm for quick, minor adjustments. 1 to 1.5 stop loss, which is reasonable. (Remember to remove for nighttime shots!)
