B+W
B+W 82mm XS-Pro Kaesemann High Transmission Circular Polarizer MRC-Nano Filter
Key Features
  • Circular Polarizer Filter
  • 99.5% Transmission, Kaesemann Foils
  • 2 to 2.8x Filter Factor, +1 to 1.5 Stops
  • Helps to Eliminate Reflections and Glare
The B+W 82mm XS-Pro Kaesemann High Transmission Circular Polarizer MRC-Nano Filter helps to reduce reflections and glare by filtering out light that has become polarized due to reflection from a non-metallic surface. The light from the sun naturally becomes partially polarized due to reflecting off electrons in air molecules, causing the light to scatter into what appears as haze. A polarizing filter arranges, and filters, this directionally polarized light perpendicularly to the reflected light, allowing for the absorption of much of this light. This results in a noticeable reduction of glare and reflections from non-metallic surfaces and an increase in the saturation of skies and foliage.

B+W XS-Pro Overview

A circular polarizer only differs from a linear polarizer in that it contains a quarter wave plane in addition to the linear polarizing filter. The addition of this quarter wave plane is to circularly polarize the linearly polarized light for the use of auto focus and exposure functions. Due to how the light is broken down and filtered with a linear polarizer, auto focus and exposure accuracy become skewed during use. When the light becomes circularly polarized, it permits the use of these functions.

Kaesemann High Transmission Circular (HTC) polarizing filters are fitted with polarizing foils which provide 99.5% light transmission that are cemented between plano-parallel optical glass. The resulting sandwich is then precision-polished to achieve accurate plano-parallel surfaces. Finally, they are edge-sealed to protect the foil against humidity.

To prevent internal ghosting and reflections, each glass surface includes multiple layers of anti-reflection coating. This Multi-Resistant Coating (MRC) also offers further protection to the filter substrate and helps it to stay clean for longer than with uncoated filters. The Nano coating associated with XS-Pro filters provides an additional eighth layer over the MRC, resulting in an improved beading effect when in contact with water for greater cleaning efficiency.

B+W filters are constructed from Schott glass for increased optical clarity and color fidelity. This filter features a thin brass rotating filter ring to minimize the potential for vignetting while enhancing durability and jamming prevention. To further reduce the possibility of vignetting when this filter is in use, the filter ring's outside diameter is slightly larger than the actual thread size. This may prevent the use of some lens manufacturer bayonet hoods.

Polarizing filters arrange, and filter, directionally polarized light perpendicularly to the reflected light, allowing for the absorption of much of the light.
Clears up haze in distant landscapes and provides more saturated, vivid colors.
Strongest effect when used at a 90° angle from the sun.
Circular polarizers are ideal for use with digital cameras and autofocus lenses where a linear polarizer will often disrupt auto exposure and focus features.
Multi-coated to prevent internal ghosting and reflections while providing over 99.5% light transmission.
2 to 2.8x filter factor reduces exposure by 1 to 1.5 stops.
Constructed from Schott glass for optical clarity.
Nano coating provides an improved beading effect with water for more efficient cleaning.
Plastic filter case for storage and transport.

I notice no color shift or loss of sharpness using this filter. I have no complaints.

You have to have this with the 14-30mm f4 Nikkor

This lens is nice for landscapes but really like the polarizer for this application. The high transmission is good for cloud cover/early/late pics. Well worth the price.

Typical B W High Quality

After decades of trying other brands of filters - a number of other top-name brands included - I've settled on B W because they consistently get both parts of the filter right: The optical part and the physical mount part. The XS-Pro line has great coatings and glass as well as brass mounts that don't bind in the lens threads. The two parts of the polarizing filter don't bind either. Both are problems experienced with other filters, even other big- name filters that use anodized aluminum instead of brass for mounts. And B&H is the only place I'll buy B W filters since some very large non-photo-specialist retailers have had defective counterfeit filters branded as B W.

Good filter, no vignetting with my Sony 16-35 GM @ 16mm, no color casting and minor light degrading, easy to rotate and not rotating by itself.

Expensive but worth it

It's been snowing here so I haven't had the chance to use it much, but from basic indoor shots it seems great. When used with B+W Nano UV filters the additional vignetting is acceptable.

Clear, consistent, and smooth

I have only used this B+W filter for a couple of weeks, but it is very consistent and clear. I specifically shot images across the full range and do not see significant evidence of color shift or patterning that I could ascribe to the filter itself. The ring turns with good, smooth friction and I don't feel any grinding or stickiness from the threads when taking it off or putting it on (which would imply the coating will flake or end up binding. I have not tested intentionally for flare, but have shot in some reflective environments and do not notice any internal reflections so far. It's very, very clear. I'm really impressed with this polarizer.
