Ilford Galerie Gold Fibre Gloss Reviews

Currently the best paper to print my work on

Not quite as wonderful as the old Galeriee Gold Fiber Silk but the best around. Warm tone but more like a matte paper. Very thick and the tonal range is fine.

It's how much a sheet?

This is beautiful paper, very substantial. Two important issues though: 1. Cost. At over $6.00USD per sheet it can only be realistically can be used by wealthy individuals. 2. Surface Flaws. After I opened the package and was looking at the surface, there was a void in the coating, like a pinhead size which would have ruined the print if I hadn't noticed it. What happened Ilford?

Can someone who has printed extensively on Gold Fibre Silk describe any differences between that and this new Gold Fibre Gloss paper other than the heavier weight? Is paper base around the same level of white? Is the surface any different looking/feeling?

Hi, I’ve been examining this really closely and have made lots of test prints on GFG and on my remaining supply of Gold Fibre Silk. Looking with magnifying glass and also comparing GFS and GFG with Canson Baryta Photographique II. (CBP). I’m mourning the loss of GFS which was the best non-matte paper I’ve ever used for both color and b/w and wanting to find the closest match I can. So they are really close, all three are almost imperceptible from each other in terms of results. I find GFG is a little less bright than GFS, I think it has less OBAs than GFS, but highlights suffer by a MINISCULE amount. Also GFG feels a little more natural in the back, a little more “rag cotton” feeling than GFS. Not sure why they called it “gloss,” as the surface is really identical to GFS. The Canson again is really close (and less expensive in the larger sizes). Surface texture is a tad more interesting than the Ilford papers but really close, not pebbly, or textured really, or anything like that. Brightness of GFG and CBP are really close as well. Shadow detail ditto. What I finally decided after numerous tests on my Canon ProGraf Pro-1000 is that I wish I didn’t have to give up my GFS because I still picked out those prints as best consistently in blind “taste tests,” but given that Ilford has unfortunately bailed on GFS, I’m probably going to go with GFG. For a while, it depended on what day you asked me, but I think I’ve settled pretty much on GFG. As much as I’d like to penalize Ilford and go elsewhere with my business, for the sake of the quality of my fine art prints, I’m going with Ilford’s own replacement. After all this, though, you still might want to get a small box of both the GFG and the Canson, since your subject matter, and taste, may differ from mine. Hope this helps. I’ve spent several weeks on this as well.
