Metabones MB_SPEF-BMPCC-BT1 overview

  • 1Description

The Canon EF Lens to Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera T Speed Booster from Metabones adapts Canon EF lenses to Micro Four Thirds mount, while using custom optics to increase the angle of view and the maximum aperture of the lens. It is designed specifically for the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera and features built-in electronics which let you set the lens aperture using the controls on the camera body.

The Speed Booster works by shrinking the image circle of your Canon EF lens down to better fit the smaller sensor of the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera. This has the effect of making the angle of view of the lens 0.58x wider or, in other terms, reducing the crop factor of the camera from 3.02x to 1.75x. This adapter features improved internal flocking for reduced internal reflections compared to the previous version.

When the Speed Booster concentrates the image circle from a lens, the brightness of the image is increased by 1 2/3 stops. This yields a maximum output aperture of f/0.74 when using a Canon EF f/1.2 lens. In addition to lens speed and angle of view, the Speed Booster also increases the lens' MTF, or how faithfully the lens transfers detail from the object to the camera sensor. These increases in MTF are seen in the corners as well as the center of the images.

To reduce strain on the Pocket Camera's MFT mount, the Speed Booster includes a removable Arca-type tripod foot to help support the weight of the adapter and lens. In addition to being compatible with Arca-type quick-release heads, it also has a 1/4"-20 threaded hole for mounting to other tripods, rigs, or quick-release plates. The built-in electronics are powered by the camera body, so no additional power supply is needed. To reduce the drain on your camera's battery, the Speed Booster uses an efficient switched-mode power supply, which continually switches between on and off states, only drawing power when it needs it.

Note: This Speed Booster is NOT compatible with the Panasonic GH4 or other MFT mount cameras. This is for use with Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera only. When the Speed Booster is used with other MFT mount cameras, its rear element may cause damage to the camera.

List of Manual Focus Lenses Which Require MODIFICATION to be Used with Speed Booster
Many manual focus lenses have rear protrusions (spikes, levers, other appendages) which can damage the optics and/or housing of Speed Booster. They need to be modified before they can be safely used on Speed Booster via third party adapter rings. Check and make sure there are no rear protrusions from the adapter/lens combination before using on Speed Booster. The following is an incomplete list of lenses known to be incompatible without modification:

Leica R
  • Super-Elmar-R 15mm
  • Elmarit R 28mm f/2.8
  • Elmarit R 35mm f/2.8
  • Summicron R 50mm f/2

    Metabones MB_SPEF-BMPCC-BT1 reviews

Canon EF Lens to Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera T Speed Booster is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 13.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from You need this. The BMPCC has some short comings, crop factor being one and lack of low light. This adaptor gives it a wider field of view, going from 2.88 to 1.7. So my 24-70 Canon is now a 38mm at the wide end rather than 70mm. Plus it brings in a lot more light helping with the lack of low light power on the BMPCC. The build quality is amazing and bring able to remove the foot is nice. I would suggest you check lens compatibility in case you have some tricky lens. I am in Australia and could get this adaptor faster and cheaper here than in Sydney, which is sad. I want to support local traders, but I can't afford to throw cash at them for the honour of wait longer.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Surprisingly good I can't stress enough how important this speedbooster is to your BM. It reduces the crop factor to 1.7! Making it ideal to shoot with any lenses, just like a DSLR. PLUS, it gives you even more light! I don't have any complains about this product except for the price, but I must tell you... THIS IS A MUST FOR FILMMAKERS. Ps. I haven't noticed any loss in sharpness, but that's just my opinion.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Turns the camera into Christmas I was a happy owner of the Cinema Camera but at some point I found it needless to carry around such a heavy camera as I would rent an Ursa Mini or a Red for the bigger studio projects anyway. So I ended up having that camera for projects with no/smaller budget that didn't make much sense to carry 5kg of cameras and rigs around to begin with. I was also tired of the crop factor, trying to fit things in and having to throw in so much light to get anything pleasant out. Needed a lighter and easier solution but I definitely didn't want to downgrade with a highly-compressed, in-camera denoised, non flat, jelly DLSR image. So after a little research, I thought to sell it and pick up a used Pocket along with this Speedbooster as the costs were similar. I knew what to expect already but oh boy is this even real?! With a little pull of the plastic base I managed to fit in my Canon EF-S 17-55 IS 2.8f that was my home lens all this time. With the speed booster, the lenses became f1.7 and almost as wide as Super 35. It was like I was shooting on an Alexa with a set of fast primes but all of them in one sharp IS zoom lens that I could take out, shoot video with and not even being noticed. I can now shoot dances in small studios, scenes inside cars and truly bokehlicious close ups. All that, with the lens I already owned, a used pocket and this Speedbooster. Super 35, super fast, 13DR, RAW or high-bitrate Prores in your pocket. It literally transforms the camera completely and anybody that owns a pocket without it should get what I'm saying. Stop spending money trying to find that perfect 10mm or 8mm lenses. Get this and all your current lenses will become wide. Did I mention fast? If you own a pocket camera, buy this.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect Companion! My Speed Booster is now bolted on to my Pocket Cinema Camera. This adapter is absolutely phenomenal, from usability, to image quality, everything is top-notch. It changes the super 16 sensor size of the Pocket (which I love) into a super 35 sensor (or APS-C, as it's known in the stills world). While I love the super 16 sensor size, it's a burden to have to buy a whole new set of glass to utilize it. This adapter takes the EF glass I already own, and turns the Pocket Cinema Camera into a familiar sensor size for most folks using digital cameras these days. Not only that, but I now have a full range of lenses that work across both of my cameras, rather than having two separate sets. As EF glass has become a new standard in the cinema world, this adapter is a true no-brainer. I can't recommend it highly enough, especially if you have a wealth of EF glass, or use Canon cameras elsewhere in your arsenal.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A must have for BMPCC users Very expensive when compared to the actual camera, unfortunately, Metabones is the only supplier of a speed booster specific for the BMPCC. If you're looking for a super 35mm look this is a must. It also helps with the poor low light ability of the camera, but also requires an ND when shooting during the day. The only real negative is the price.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Does exactly what it should! The BMPCC is quite limited when it comes to camera lenses because of its mount size, but this product was able convert my Canon lenses flawlessly. You get the best of both worlds with a wonderful film camera--the BMPCC--and the ability to use a Canon lense that is excellent in quality.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from EF Power for the BMPCC Works awesome with Canon EF glass, but be aware it WILL NOT work with your EFS lenses due to a slight lip on the EFS ring. There is also a slight give in the speedbooster, when you move it side to side there a little give seems to work fine though.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera T Speed Booster by Metabones The fitting between the camera and the adapter is a little looser than I'd like. It does definitely help with the crop on EF lenses. I've found it to work with my EF-S lenses (11-16 Tokina) and (17-50 Sigma).
