SmallHD 702 Bright overview

  • 1Description

The SmallHD 702 Bright On-Camera Monitor is not only very bright (at a 1000 cd/m² brightness) but also very sharp with a Full HD 1080p display and 1000:1 contrast ratio. Moreover, the LCD features optically bonded glass with anti-reflective coating. All this adds up to highly more accurate daylight visibility in high image quality, on a fairly large 7" screen.

In addition, the 702 Bright is housed in an aircraft grade aluminum unibody, and has a slim and trendy design. The design also offers an industry-first battery support solution -- dual integrated battery plates each support both Sony L-Series and Canon LP-E6 batteries. If you have an L-Series battery, just snap it at the top of the plate. If you have an LP-E6 battery, snap it in instead at the bottom of the same plate. And feel free to mix and match.

The 702 Bright offers HD-SDI and HDMI inputs and outputs, as well as a headphone jack for monitoring audio. It also has a store of monitoring features, including Waveform, custom LUT support, anamorphic de-squeeze, and audio meters. On top of everything, it runs on SmallHD's Page Builder OS, which is designed more like a production assistant than operating system. This system allows you to create up to 12 pages of favorite features and to toggle between these pages with the flick of the joystick button.

More resolution, less reflection, rugged and modern build, powerful processing, and intuitive interaction -- these are the words that describe SmallHD's well-thought-out 702 Bright On-Camera Monitor.

    SmallHD 702 Bright reviews

    702 Bright On-Camera Monitor is rated 3.8 out of 5 by 44.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Worth the money! I really like this Monitor for all types of shooting. It has a great pages feature so you can scroll through different setups. You can view the thing in direct sunlight, its super bright...but never looked washed out due to that brightness. They have some built in LUTS so you can give a scene a certain kinda look or feel while shooting. And I love having focus peaking on a screen this large...I can shoot at a very low F-stop and still nail the focus of the shot....F2.8!!! Its exciting that a monitor can do more than just monitor. Its going to allow so much more flexibility in my set-up! oh oh... and build quality its built like a tank but isnt heavy like one.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Wait to buy if your camera has interlaced output I bought this because I work with a bunch of different camera platforms and wanted something that would work well with them all, SDI or HDMI. I did a good amount of research on the product but never saw that it can't handle interlaced footage as of yet. Interlaced footage from HDMI, like from a Canon C100 will have a vertical jitter, making it difficult to find critical focus. Customer support said there will hopefully be a firmware update in the future. The joystick feels a little cheap, which is surprising since the rest of the build is top notch. Other than that, it looks great and is very bright.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Battery mount broke, couldn't be fixed I really liked the user feel of this product, but for some reason it bricked on me. I would plug a battery up and I could feel the unit heat up, but it wouldn't light up. I eventually found out that this was a known issue at SmallHD with the battery adapter. I tried to get a replacement but they didn't have the inventory. Instead of sending me a refund immediately it took several months. A nice lady at the company eventually sent me a 702 Light (after I purchased it) so I could accomplish the work I needed. They had me ship the Bright back for a refund because they said they didn't have stock. They said all of their recently manufactured models were for distributors. Eventually I feel like they squared up with me, but in the end I did not end up with a working Bright. Seems to me like the normal issues of a growing company. I don't take offense to it, but it's important to realize that if there are any issues, you're taking your chances. (Also, it's rather strange that my original review was removed by B&H)

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Motion Stuttering and Bad Service We received this monitor and noticed that the motion was slightly stuttering, no matter what source of video was put into it. We contacted smallhd who RMA'ed it for us and then we had to call 5 times over a month to get any idea on what was happening with it, even though it said it would be back within 5 days. When the fixed monitor returned, it was still showing the stutter. B&H was nice enough to replace the monitor with a brand new one and that also showed the stuttering issue. We will be buying a different monitor because this is unusable.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Some issues... The first Bright 7 in monitor I received was DOA. Wouldn't fire up at all. I had to send it back, but to B&H's credit, they had me a new one the next day...but for a while I had to carry the financial load for two monitors until Paypal refunded my purchase price. The 2nd unit powered up just fine, but on first use, was very very yellow right out of the box, with some other strange hues far different than those shown in the EVF, LCD on camera, or to the naked eye. In subsequent uses, that has evened out a bit. Weird. Not a huge fan of having to use a dummy battery adapter instead of just a D-tap to mini plug, but that's workable. The front bracket they sell in the Bright 7 accessories section must be for the 701, because it doesn't even remotely fit the front of my monitor. That's going to have to be returned. They backordered the sun hood...but when it arrived, coupled with the anti-reflective screen cover accessory...it makes this unit really nice to use outside, which was kind of the point of the whole thing. Overall, the monitor is starting to grow on me, after a rough start. Huge improvement in visibility outdoors over my smallHD DP6.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very very Good! Good color - Agrees with mySony FS7 stock VF and Gratical HD eye piece. It has all the scopes you could ever need. Good ones. All graphs are clear and easy to read. I got the kit with the screen protector and it is clear and easy to see through - just take off the film from BOTH sides of the cover screen. This film is very thin and its easy to be convinced that you Got it all off.... I'm using the 702 Bright as an on camera monitor and yes, its just a bit on the TooBIG side of the scale but get it mounted on an arm and... somehow at what 7? ...its less bulky then a 5 BlackMagic Video assist and you can see the screen, outside!.. as advertised! Odd thing: There are intermittent vertical blue streaks on screen but so few that I'm still investigating... Changing cables and alike.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Strips audio signal from SDI output?! Nice looking little monitor, its bright and no hood is needed. Not having a power input jack is at times a drawback. The real issue is that the sdi output strips the audio signal. This makes the monitor's sdi pass through feature worthless on big sets where you need to daisy chain multiple devices off of the sdi. Anytime I need to use this on a multicam I now have to put it at the end of the chain so everyone can get the audio signal on the SDI. This is the only SDI device I have ever owned that has done this and I'm totally surprised that for the price you don't get full audio on the sdi channel. I asked SmallHD about this a year ago and they said it would be added but nothing has happened and the new 502bright I've learned does the same thing!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Small HD 702 Offers Big Results This monitor is amazing. I use it with our C100 in direct sunlight and it's worth every penny. It's just the right size for field use indoors or out. Our still photographer was looking at the screen during our last shoot and asked to plug it in to his 5d. Long story shorter he just ordered one for his high-end real estate shoots. No more using his loupe outdoors! The only downside is the bright screen output uses up batteries far faster than our SmallHD 302, but that's a small trade off for the performance.
