DJI Osmo overview

  • 1Description

The Osmo system from DJI combines the Zenmuse X3 camera/gimbal with a detachable handle, bringing the benefits of stabilized 4K shooting to a handheld form factor. The camera features a 1/2.3" CMOS sensor that enables up to full DCI 4K (4096 x 2160) video recording at 24 or 25p as well as 12MP photo capability. Basic controls for the camera and gimbal are provided on the handle itself, including a joystick for manual pan and tilt. For monitoring and more advanced operation, there is a Wi-Fi link allowing Osmo to be tethered to a mobile device running the DJI GO iOS and Android app. An included smartphone holder effectively turns your smartphone into an on-board monitor. The Wi-Fi features a range of up to 85', so you can operate the camera and gimbal remotely as well.

Ergonomic Handle
Providing a grip for easy handheld operation, the handle incorporates a joystick for panning and tilting the gimbal. There is also record start/stop button and a shutter button, putting the essential controls right at your fingertips. A trigger allows you to toggle modes. The camera/gimbal assembly can detach from the handle for storage or use in other applications
Remotely operate the gimbal and view a live feed using the GO App for iOS and Android. A Wi-Fi link in the camera allows you to tether your mobile device, and supports a range of up to 85'. In addition to basic operation, the app allows you to change camera settings and access advanced features
Detachable Mobile Device Holder
A rosette attachment allows you to connect the included mobile device holder. This enables you to use your smartphone as a monitor to view a live image - streamed via Wi-Fi - from the camera. It can be rotated to achieve an optimal viewing angle. The mobile device holder disconnects so that you can use Osmo with other mounting accessories, such as the extension rod
3-Axis Gimbal Stabilizer
The camera system incorporates three motors which serve to stabilize the camera as well as move it manually in relation to the handle. Using the handle's joystick or the app, it can be panned over a 320° range, tilt down 35°, and up 135°. It can pan or tilt at a rate of up to 120° per second
Panorama Mode
The Automatic Panorama mode is designed to make shooting 360° panoramas as seamless as possble. Just hold the Osmo up above your head and tap a button. The camera will rotate, capturing images as it goes while staying completely level
Time-Lapse Recording
Osmo simplifies recording the passage of time. Whether standing still for a stationary timelapse, or moving through your world for a hyperlapse, you can create smooth videos automatically and without a tripod
Tripod-Free Long Exposures
Take sharp long exposure shots even without a tripod. The stabilization system in the Osmo keeps the camera almost totally still so you can freehand capture stills of up to 2 seconds. With practice, you may be able to achieve even longer shots

    DJI Osmo reviews

Osmo Handheld 4K Camera and 3-Axis Gimbal is rated 3.9 out of 5 by 266.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Not what I expected. The good: Gimbal is steady and the overall design is pretty solid. Footage was very nice for the size of the sensor and price. The bad: Buggy software takes several minutes to establish connection. Horizon does get off after a bit of use and Osmo needs shut off and restarted. Manual camera controls are terrible, by the time you get everything set, you probably lost the shot you were trying to get. The point of this purchase for me was a quick action camera I could use on the go. It is anything but quick and the fuss you have to make over the thing to get it going was a deal breaker for me. Bottom line: Not worth it, sent it back.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Incredible I'm a regular, pro shooter/producer/director/editor and rarely have I been this impressed with a piece of equipment. This thing works like crazy - literally right out of the box. It will be an extremely useful addition to almost anyone's toolkit. For quick tracking, booming, following shots it works like a charm. The app fired up without a hitch, turning my phone into a nice little monitor, and allowing for control of all camera features. It is extremely easy to use and intuitive. My only complaint is the fixed focus ( not surprised - I knew the camera's features and limitations ahead of time) but anything closer than 3 or 4 feet or so will be soft.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from DONT BUY!.. HERES WHY I am a professional videographer on my second OSMO. The first was returned because it never would WiFi connect with my smartphone. After five months of use, I had an assignment where I shot maybe 100 scenes and only got 17 back on the card. I sat there and watched the red light come on and the recording counter march up the second shot. The shots I lost were totally random, but basically I lost all my first shots and most of the middle. After spending most of my day with four different DJI techs, I have no resolution. I will return the unit for refund and await GoPro or someone else to make a relieable unit.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Just Fantastic Have been looking forward to the Osmo for some time. While for many projects a Super 35 sensor or bigger delivers desired field depth and bokeh, the small sensor ensures that everything is in focus. That's perfect for one-man-band work, making following the subject the only thing to worry about. The final image is clean, well-colored, and stable. The Osmo isn't great in dark shoots, but it's not an issue if you keep your shots well-lit. The only downside of this is the lack of weather sealing and plastic exterior. However, for the price, it's hard to ignore. Get additional batteries as the camera lasts about 40 minutes per battery.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from It's great, but,... So the Osmo is a great little camera. It works exactly as anticipated, with one exception. It's glitchy. At times the screen will scramble. Other times the screen will simply go black. One final issue, is it will occasionally freeze while filming, which will show when reviewing the shot. That being said, I have full confidence that DJI will get these issues solved in future updates (past experience provides me with this confidence). I am pretty patient and if I have to reshoot something, I'm okay with that as the time it saves me from getting a full rig set up to get the shot, still puts me way ahead on time! So far, I am loving this new device!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Android users beware After five hours with a techician, I am still unable to use the OSMO or even link it with my Samsung Galaxy S4. First, the Gratis Group technician (doing DJI's dirty work) said there is a known problem with Android uses paired with the OSMO. Android users are not able to pair the unit App with the OSMO through WIFI, but only with a cellular signal. The Galaxy only has WiFi, not cellular, so I am out of luck. For now, I will probably be returning the OSMO and await GoPro's entry into to market with maybe a dedicated screen. I have wasted an entire workday simply trying to get the unit to work, what a waste!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Problems right out of the boxq I bought the Osmo for an important shoot I had coming up. The unit arrived a week early so I was thinking I was going to have plenty of time to practice using the Osmo. What I wasn't expecting was being back and forth with DJI support team trying to figure out why the unit was shutting down after only a minute of recording. After 2 days of going back and forth they finally told me to return the unit. But it turns out that B&H will not actually do a return unless DJI approves it. Needless to say, I did not have the Osmo for the shoot, and now I am waiting for DJI to send me a replacement. Apperantly this is an ongoing issue with this product.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Amazing! ... If it would work The first two times I used the Osmo I knew I would be in love with this device. And then I turn it on for a third occasion and the gimbal no longer works. The camera turns on and everything but the gimbal is limp. The whole point of the camera doesn't work. Even if I replace the device I'm worried that the same issue will happen again. I didn't drop it or shake it. There's no firmware update. I'm baffled and pretty disappointed as I am leaving on a trip and wanted to bring the Osmo. They're not ready to release this product.
