Apple Pencil overview

  • 1Description

Unleash your creativity with the Apple Pencil. This stylus connects to your iPad Pro or 6th Gen iPad via Bluetooth, giving you the ability to draw, paint, write, and draft with single-pixel accuracy. When in use, the Pencil and iPad Pro work together to determine the Pencil's position on the screen, the force at which it's pressed into the display, and the angle at which it is held. This lets you alter the thickness and shading of the mark you're making in a fluid, natural manner.

The Pencil can be used in a number of apps, including the Mail and Notes apps and a variety of third-party apps. It's designed for low latency and high precision, with the iPad Pro scanning its signal twice as often as when you use your finger. The iPad Pro can differentiate between fingers and Pencil, and both can be used simultaneously. The system also detects when you rest your hand on the display and ignores those inputs.

The battery lasts for up to 12 hours and is charged by removing the cap and inserting the Lightning connector into the Lightning port on your iPad Pro. A Pencil with a depleted battery can gain up to 30 minutes of usage time with a 15 second charge.

    Apple Pencil reviews

Pencil is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 215.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not recommended unless you NEED pen input. The pencil is cool and the input is very responsive, but I seriously doubt if I'll ever use it. If I had the iPad for use at work, it might be great for taking notes, but for home use... Keep in mind, there is nowhere to store the pend it when using the basic Smart Cover, so it will never be nearby when needed. Not surprisingly, it's completely round which ensures that it rolls away easily. Above all, however, the pencil is VERY smooth - to the point it is difficult to grip. It doesn't stay in my hand exactly the same way that Apple earpods don't stay in my ears! I suppose there's probably 3rd party grips...

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great with some very fixable flaws The pencil works great! Super sensitive and much more effective on the large screen of the 12 iPad. The flaws though are fairly obvious and somewhat easily fixed: - completely round pencil is prone to rolling off tables and is somewhat hard to keep track of--remedied by attaching the clip from a normal pencil/pen - weighting of the pencil is somewhat odd for sustained writing.. The pencil feels very long and hefty at the back. It would be nice if it was more front heavy - the small lightning port cap and charging adapter are fairly easy to lose... Can't wait for the Pense to fix this Overall though, this thing is great!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from amazing lines but some small oversights The Apple pencil is amazing for the lines it produces. I have tried many companies' stylus on the ipad, and this is far and away the best. It feels like a pencil and writes like one. But, as many others comment, Apple overlooked the need to attach the pencil and to keep track of the top while the pencil charges. They also overlooked the need to turn it off when it is not in use. Otherwise, it drains the battery of the pencil and the ipad while each waits for the other to do something. I am careful, so I don't expect to drop the pencil or lose the top. I am pleased with the pencil. But it could be even better.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Game changing functionality. Revolutionary design concept. I waited 30 days to get my Apple Pencil and now that I've used it for a month I can honestly say that it was well worth the wait. Currently it can only be used on the Apple iPad Pro, but I predict that this product, (and other versions like it from Apple in the future) will be compatible with any device that has 3D multi-touch technology i.e.; iPhone, iPod Touch... etc. (personally, I'm hoping they make it compatible with the iPhone 6s + in a software update... since I've decided that product is next on my list) A little qualification: I'm a professional musician (retired) and an artist/illustrator who has been drawing my whole life (64 yrs.) Let's say I've developed some pretty serious muscle memory around the physics of drawing. The first time I dropped the Apple Pencil on the iPad Pro and started to doodle in the Notes app... my jaw dropped, too. Except for the slick feel of the hard plastic tip on the glass surface, everything I would expect from a 2B or HB pencil appeared on the screen. I could rough out a form with light to moderate pressure. If I pressed a little harder, the line got a little darker (4B). A little harder it turned into a 6B. Then I put it on it's side and it became a woodless 8B slurry of gooey darkness. And there was no... repeat, NO LATENCY whatsoever. NONE. Apple calls it 3D touch technology, (I think,) because it appears to be translating location; pressure; and angle (tilt) all at once. (That's really something) So, if you think this device is pricey... think again. The competition has been much more expensive with less precision for years. (Please read the specs carefully, this thing is accurate down to 1 pixel and is scanning 240 times a second) The only complaint I've had is it seems slippery, and it is completely round, making it possible to roll off a table. (but the rolling and slippery was cured by using UHU tac (a.k.a. earthquake putty) on the forward third, right where my fingers grip. Now it is a joy to hold, and feels secure leaving it on the table to charge. Pairing with the iPad Pro is easy. Just plug it in the lightning port. A cable and adapter is provided to charge, (and if you're stuck without it, you can connect it to your iPad for a few seconds to get 30 minute quick charge.) Yes, I would recommend anyone interested in drawing or painting BUY this device. If it's on backorder... it's worth the wait, and B&H is the very best (and usually the first) at getting new product deliveries. I been waiting for this product since 1984, and I can honestly say that... because of the performance of the Apple Pencil (on the iPad Pro) it's been well worth the wait.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Essential for anyone who wants productivity! Apple Pencil made my experience with the iPad Pro much more productive and interactive. I use the iPad very much for drawings and sketches of my work. It was very annoying to do them with your finger. With Apple Pencil, you can easily draw whatever you want. With the pressure sensor, at a single risk I can thicken and sharpen the stroke, giving more richness and detail in my work. The load of the Apple Pencil is fast and lasts a lot, I'm unconcerned with it while working, it never left me in the hand during all those days with the use. The Apple Pencil is indispensable for anyone who uses the iPad Pro to work in Design, Fashion, etc. Making everything easier, faster and more productive.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good Tool - needs software I'm having fun with this but I wish I knew about more software to exploit its full functionality. Without 3rd party software, I'm finding I can only use the Apple pencil with the Apple Notes software and that's too rudimentary for most of what I want to do (even when taking notes at a meeting). Also, in notes I wish I could bet a broader line for simple handwriting. So -- no complaints about the pencil itself (although I did order a separate lasso of sorts for the tiny cap and charger connection since they are so easy to misplace). However, now SOFTWARE is the issue.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great new opportunities provided by the iPad pencil. I wasn't sure it was worth spending the money for a glorified stylus, but it was worth it. I have arthritis, and no longer have the manual dexterity I used to have. The pencil makes it a lot easier, and I am enjoying the ability to write and draw on my iPad Pro. I would be even happier if it was not so expensive.....

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great for Note-taking I mainly use this pencil for note-taking on my iPad Pro (12.9). It's very accurate and the delay is negligible/imperceptible to me. Build quality is exceptional and the battery lasts all day. Length and weight feel just right.
