Panasonic 100-400mm f/4.0-6.3 overview

  • 1Description

A Micro Four Thirds lens with a not-so-micro zoom range, the Leica DG Vario-Elmar 100-400mm f/4-6.3 ASPH. POWER O.I.S. Lens from Panasonic offers a truly expansive 200-800mm equivalent focal length range, yet retains a relatively compact stature to suit the Micro Four Thirds system. Characterized by its Leica branding, this sophisticated optic employs aspherical and extra-low dispersion elements to significantly reduce chromatic and spherical aberrations throughout the zoom range for a high degree of image clarity and sharpness. Also benefitting image sharpness, a POWER O.I.S. system, which is compatible with Lumix G camera's Dual I.S. function, helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake for sharper handheld shooting at longer focal lengths.

Benefitting both stills shooting and video recording, a 240 fps high-speed AF motor is both quiet and precise, and a focus limiter function can be employed to constrain the focusing range for even quicker performance. Additionally, the physical design of the lens utilizes a gapless construction that renders it both dust- and moisture-resistant for use in inclement conditions. And while its lightweight, compact form factor is suitable for handheld shooting, the 100-400mm f/4-6.3 also features a removable rotating tripod collar for fast switching between horizontal and vertical shooting orientations when working atop a monopod or tripod.

Telephoto zoom designed for Micro Four Thirds system cameras, this lens offers a 200-800mm equivalent focal length.
Designed in collaboration with Leica, the 20 elements, 13 groups optical design incorporates one aspherical extra-low dispersion element, one Ultra Extra-Low Dispersion element, and two extra-low dispersion elements. The combination of aspherical and low dispersion elements helps to reduce spherical aberrations and color fringing throughout the zoom range for improved sharpness, clarity, and color accuracy.
POWER O.I.S. mechanism helps to control camera shake for sharper handheld shooting. This system is also compatible with the Dual I.S. function in select Lumix G cameras, which more effectively minimizes the appearance of camera shake by using both sensor-shift and lens-shift type stabilization methods.
A 240 fps AF motor offers fast, precise, and near-silent focusing performance to benefit both stills shooting and video recording applications.
Focus Limiter allows you to constrain the focusing range of the lens from its minimum focusing distance to infinity, or from 16.4' to infinity.
The minimum focusing distance is 4.3', which pairs with an equivalent maximum magnification of 0.5x to support working with close-up subjects.
A rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality when working with selective focus and shallow depth of field techniques.
Gapless construction renders the lens both dust- and moisture-resistant to support photographing in outdoor and harsh environments.
A quick-shift, two-part rotating tripod collar permits quick switching between horizontal and vertical shooting orientations, and keeps the lens controls in the same place once rotated for more intuitive handling.
An integrated hide-away lens hood can retract around the lens when not in use, or be deployed to guard against stray light from causing unwanted lens flare and ghosting.
A zoom ring lock prevents unwanted lens creep from occurring while carrying the lens.
Dedicated levers are available to select the Focus Limiter position, AF or MF focusing methods, or to deactivate the lens-based POWER O.I.S.

    Panasonic 100-400mm f/4.0-6.3 reviews

    Leica DG Vario-Elmar 100-400mm f/4-6.3 ASPH. POWER O.I.S. Lens is rated 4.3 out of 5 by 78.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great but? Optically this lens exceeds my expectations; which is why I give it 5 tars. However some of the design features I question. 1. The lock and unlock switch really doesn't work that well and it's confusing when your locked or unlocked. 2. Has anyone used this lens in winter? Try grasping the lens hood knob; tiny is not the word for it. 3. Others have talked about the space between tripod mount and lens; you have to adapt to turning the lens from the top. 4. Again know issue, of stiff barrel. Overall this is a great lens with some weak design features. I bought this for my EM1 instead of the Oly 300 F4 and am happy with the decision.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Outstanding Value This lens is the same size as the Nikon 24-70mm FX lens except that the field of view is 200-800mm. That is incredible. Because of the Image stabilization and lightness of the lens, it is easily hand held at 800mm. It's very sharp and it is only 1/3 of a stop slower than F5.6 at 800mm. You get all this for a cost that is much lower than an 800mm FX equivalent The zoom ring is stiff but for what you getting, what is there to complain about? If panasonic comes out with a 1.4 Teleconverter, that would give the lens an incredible reach of 1120mm. The enclosed photo was shot at 800mm and not cropped.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Panasonic 100-400, Update after several months The one item I've seen referred to in many reviews is the zoom stiffness. I can report that after several months of fairly steady use by my bird photographer spouse, the zoom action has loosened up noticeably. There's a bit more stiffness at the 300-400 part of the range than in 100-300, but it's now actually practical to use the zoom lock at times. Otherwise, the lens continues to impress with its stunning sharpness, stabilization, and ease of carrying and unobtrusive look. It's used with an Olympus OMD 5 Mark II with a Peak Design Slidelite strap, which distributes the weight nicely and is removable/adjustable, and it all fits nicely into a very compact Domke F-5XB bag, so there's no excuse not to bring this combo along.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from An exceptional long lens for m4:3 I have been very pleased with this lens. It is amazingly compact for it's range and reach, and very light as well. I like the cleverly designed tripod foot and controls. Optically it is quite good. It tested very well for me. The OIS is nothing short of amazing and it's possible to make hand held shots with this lens that I would normally never attempt. I've seen complaints about the stiffness of the zoom, but my sample is not unusually stiff. I note here that you must rotate the locking ring for the zoom to the OFF position until you get a click. If you don't get the click it will be stiff to zoom. The lens has very good close focus ability and it's easy to photograph large insects and small flowers. The lens is sharp even at 400mm.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from It's me not the lens. I think this is going to be a great addition to my lens lineup, but it will take some practice to get the kind of wildlife shots I've been hoping for. It's not all about the glass. On the plus side, the good shots are very good. As others have mentioned, the zoom is very stiff, especially for my small hands. That said, I bought this to shoot birds and wildlife from a distance, so I doubt zooming will be a big issue. The one other downside is the weight. It is by far the heaviest lens I own. If my object were anything other than wildlife it would not be worth it. Still hoping for great things.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect Its nice when you buy something that is expensive and after using it realize it was worth every penny. I had previously used the lumix 100-300 lens and returned it because it was so hard to get sharp shots at the longer end of the zoom range. Not so with the 100-400. Pictures across the zoom range are sharp - the image stabilization seems to work extremely well even at modest shutter speeds (1/100-1/200 sec). It works quite well even hand held which is quite an accomplishment.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great lens for wildlife and flowers I purchased this lens to replace an aging Panasonic 100-300. I was looking for better image quality and auto focus that could keep up with the 9 frames per second continuous auto focus on my Olympus E-M1. I got all I wanted, and more. Not only is this lens great for long range critters and birds, but it is fantastic for close work with flowers and bugs. Worth every penny.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best mirrorless wildlife lens, period This lens is so exceptional, that I actually adopted a second camera system just to use it. Let me explain. My daily driver, with which I am mightily pleased, is a Sony a7rII. Love everything about it except for the lack of native zoom power. Then, when my wife adopted the Olympus em10 mark II, and we were on vacation, my 70-300mm Sony Zoom failed. I really had no choice except to use her Olympus 42mm-150mm zoom (which yields the equivalent of 300mm). And the results turned my head. Instead of getting the Tamron 600mm for Sony A-system plus a converter, I bought this Panny-Leica, and put the forthcoming Olympus EM1 Mark II on my Christmas list. Well, when the new Olympus arrived and I put the Leica 100-400mm onto it MAGIC. Couldn't believe the IQ and speed of this system. It's really the ultimate wildlife setup. I'm only just learning how to use it, But a already blown away.
