Sekonic L-308S-U reviews

L-308S-U Flashmate Light Meter is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 94.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from More useful than I originally thought! I use this to set my aperture after fixing SS and ISO in my small studio environment. I had one years ago and had decided that the camera light meter was enough to get adequately exposed pictures. As I moved more toward High Key photographs having the camera choose the aperture became less and less accurate even using the smallest area target to set the exposure. Use of this light meter has cleaned all that up and I now get perfectly exposed photos the first time. It's understandable, easy to use and flexible. I now find myself using it in many types of photos and the results, to my eye, are improved.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Excellent, as long as it's working. I was trying to write a review for the previous model: L-308S but it won't let me. However my comment still applies here. Sekonic light meters work amazingly, as long as they're working. However, if you ever have to deal with Sekonic directly, good luck getting in touch with them. For the past week, I've tried calling them. I've left them messages. I've emailed them, and I'm yet to get anyone over there to call me back or answer my emails... Looks like at this rate, I'm going to have to get another one. You better believe that it will not be Sekonic, or anything that its parent company MacGroup sells.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I should have bought one a long time ago I know I could get a much more sophisticated flash/light meter, but this one is more than good enough for me. I have always got by on the trial and error method of looking at the back of the camera. That does work, but this gives me a much better exposure much quicker. And I actually think I would be at a disadvantage if it was any more complicated. I like that it is a simple, entry level meter. I have enough to think about at a shoot, and I was a little worried that this would be more work than it is worth. But it is easy to use and seems to be very accurate so far.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Light Meter This meter is exactly what I was looking for. I needed to meter that would work for both ambient light and flash photography. This meter perfectly fits the bill without breaking the bank. The functions are simple and very easy to use. I would definitely recommend this to anyone in need of a light meter. As always B & H provided a superior product at an excellent price.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Accurate, easy-to-use meter This meter is used in studio and on location for portraits, headshots, and product photography. It functions well for this purpose, and has proven to be reliable and accurate. Accurate meter readings make me far more productive in the studio, with far less experimentation and fewer wasted shots. The construction is lightweight plastic, and it has yet to prove that it can hold up to ongoing professional use and handling.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Reliable & Portable This lightmeter is accurate & simple to use. I was up & running right away without having to deal with complicated instructions or settings. You simply enter your desired shutter speed & ISO values in the meter, & then it gives you the aperture value required for a proper exposure. You can take readings of the ambient light, wired studio flash, & wireless flashes including speedlights. You can even specify if you want values calculated at either 1/2 stop or 1/3 stop increments. However, while it allows you to set your preferred shutter speed & ISO values, it does not allow you to specify your preferred aperture value. This isn't an issue if you understand how to play with shutter speed & ISO to get to your desired aperture, but it's worth noting if that feature is important to you. The unit is smaller than a portable hard drive & fits easily in a pocket. It does come with a lanyard in case you prefer to wear it around your neck. It's powered by one AA battery. It's very light & can stay worn around your neck for hours without bothering you. Consider this lightmeter if you're on a budget & want something capable but simple to use.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from more about light meter This is a great small meter. I bought the early model and sold it off. Later I bought the new model the Sekonic with an S. that is L-308S. most pictures taken on my Sony camera with this incident light meter are great. but take note reading incident light at out door is tricky. sometime you may see shadow on the lumi disc. It depend what camera you carry. If it is a Nikon. it is always date on. sometimes it defer by 1/3 a stop.because Nikon is using 3D color matrix metering. which take color in to account for exposure. where else incident meter read light only. All this handheld meter are great for indoor flash photography. Take note each light meter manufacturer have their own K factor added to the meter. for today meters it is not using the 18% gray any more. so it depend whose K factor you like Sekonic,Minolta,Gossen, Interfit etc.
