Nikon 16031 Overview

With a powerful magnification and a relatively compact design, Nikon's 10x42 ProStaff 3S Binoculars give users the ability to discern details at distance without weighing them down.

These binoculars feature silver-alloy-coated roof prisms and anti-reflection multicoated optics that produce bright and clear high-contrast images with true color rendition across the spacious and wide field of view. The 42mm objectives boost their light-gathering ability to improve views in challenging light such as at dawn and dusk or in foggy and cloudy weather without the bulk and weight of larger-objective models. Their wide apparent angle of view helps to mitigate the appearance of visible hand shake that is often associated with holding powerful optics such as this and minimizes movement of the horizon line on rough or rolling seas to limit disorientation when using them on a boat. The combination of prisms, optical coatings, wide field of view, and comfortable eye relief allow users to enjoy a comfortable and immersive observational experience in most lighting conditions.

Complementing the optical performance are construction details that make these binoculars durable and comfortable to use. They have a lightweight and corrosion-resistant reinforced polycarbonate resin chassis and are protected by black rubberized armor that is accented with textured palm pads to give them a secure non-slip grip. The optical tubes are nitrogen filled and O-ring sealed to be waterproof and submersible, as well as resistant to internal fogging when moving through extreme temperature variations and environmental conditions. A tethered one-piece ocular rainguard covers the eyecups as the binoculars hang around the neck and prevents rain and spraying water from filling them, and the objective lens caps can clip onto the neck strap to keep them safe from blowing overboard or being lost on the forest floor.

Whether you're hunting or birding, boating or watching your favorite team, these ProStaff optics will quickly become indispensable for all your outdoor activities.

Optical Performance

  • High 10x magnification brings distant objects in close for detailed observations
  • 42mm objective lenses improve light-gathering ability without adding excessive bulk or weight
  • Roof prism light path ensures optical tubes remain thin for a compact form factor
  • Anti-reflection multicoated optics maximize light transmission across the entire visible spectrum for accurate color rendition and improved contrast and clarity
  • High-reflectivity silver-alloy prism coatings reduce internal diffraction to further improve light transmission and contrast
  • Wide 63° apparent angle of view helps to minimize the appearance of visible hand shake that is common when holding high-power optics such as this
  • 367' field of view at 1000 yards

Use and Handling

  • Closed-bridge configuration provides a solid and stable platform for the internal focusing mechanism
  • Large slip center focus wheel allows for precise focus control, even while wearing gloves
  • Right eye dioptric adjustment collar helps to compensate for individual eye prescription
  • Twist-up/click-stop rubber eyecups for use with or without eyewear
  • 15.7mm eye relief helps to reduce eyestrain and improves viewing comfort
  • Comfortable 4.2mm exit pupil will cover most pupils as they open and dilate in low light to keep the full scene in view

Construction Details

  • Environmentally friendly Eco-Glass is made without lead or arsenic
  • Lightweight and durable fiberglass-reinforced polycarbonate chassis
  • Chassis material is temperature resistant, preventing the expansion and contraction that is common with metal, which can cause the optical components to move out of alignment over time and prevent sharp focus
  • Textured protective rubber armoring provides a slip-resistant grip, especially in cold and wet weather
  • Textured, ergonomically placed palm pads improve grip stability and comfort
  • Nitrogen-filled and O-ring sealed to be waterproof and submersible to a depth of 3.3' (1m) for up to 10 minutes and resistant to internal fogging when moving through extreme temperature changes and environmental conditions
  • One-piece tethered ocular rainguard protects eyecups from water pooling in them from rain or spraying water when hanging from the neck
  • Objective lens caps can be clipped to neck strap to avoid losing them during observation sessions
  • Packed in an attractive box
  • Weight: 20 ounces

Nikon 16031 Reviews

Light weight, compact, clear view, great for bird watching

The weight does not fatigue your arms when viewing birds. I like the better magnification with a 10x42 vs 10x32 for easier identification. Easy to adjust to each eye piece to vision needs, fits good for small to large eye distance. I suspect the review about someone needing more distance for their eyes is an unusual occurrence. My husband has been buying all his photography items through B&H for 20 years. We even visit the store when we come out east so he can enjoy the in person experience. Glad they also sell binoculars and have good documentation on how to choose them. Also, they allow you to split payment methods so I could use a Visa gift card along with another form of payment, which Amazon does not allow (only can split payment using Amazon gift card and 1 other credit card).

I bought these for my wife and she loves them. The optics are really very good for the price -- a good, bright, and clear image. The performance is close to that of binoculars costing much more.

Better than expected (10x42)

I never tried these lower end Nikon binoculars thinking they wouldn't be good enough for me. I was surprised at the very good overall quality. If I want a somewhat better view I will reach for my Lecias. But they cost 9 times as much and are nearly a half pound heavier. Also when I seen the low sale price I thought something has to be not perfect. Wrong again, 100% great! B&H has the few times I dealt with them been 100% perfect service.

Hidden treasure

I bought these as an inexpensive addition to our house's binoculars, one we could use while looking at birds and other wildlife out the back door or window. I should have known that anything by Nikon would not really be cheap. These binocs are a quality product, certainly equivalent to a pair of other brand binocs I got at twice the price. Clear view, wonderful close focus. Highly recommended.

This is the 2nd set of these that I have purchased. At this price point it is easy to have a set of high quality binocs available for birding when visiting family away from home.

Great binoculars. B&H staff encouraged me to compare large offering based on a review criteria of brightness and fidelity without selling one over another. My wife and I each have a pair and are very pleased with the ease of use. Bought a third pair for a colleague with interest in birding.

What is the main difference between the Nikon 10 x42 ProStaff 3S and 7S binoculars?
Asked by: Cristina
The 3s has Silver-Coated Roof Prisms while the 7s has Phase-Corrected Compact Roof Prisms. The 7s has Highly Reflective Mirror Prism Coatings while the 3s does not. And the 3s has Multi-Coated Optics while the 7s has Fully Multi-Coated Optics Multi-coated means at least one of the major optical elements in a fully-coated binocular has multiple coatings of anti-reflective compounds on at least one surface. Fully multicoated means all glass surfaces have multiple coatings and it is the best kind, resulting in light transmission of 90-95% for bright, sharp and contrast images.

How well do these bins work with eyeglasses? I wear bifocals.
Asked by: Dawn
I wear regular glasses and they are good when there is not much peripheral light that can hit your eye when you are looking into the eyepieces. Eye relief is good enough. The apparent field of view is very large so it is a bit difficult to see the very edges when viewing with glasses.

I see plenty of chromatic aberrations on this (purple fringing). Is this expected?
Asked by: pavel
The Nikon 10x42 ProStaff 3S Binocular is considered a low end binoculars and will have a substantial amount of "purple fringing" The Monarch series will hane a minimal amount of fringing or none at all.

question

What is 8 x42 mean?
Asked by: Anonymous
8 is the magnification power & the 42 is the diameter of the objective lens (in MM), so the bigger that number the bigger the size of the lens (and bigger the FOV)
