ORCA OR-28 Overview

The Orca OR-28 is a carry bag intended for Zoom F8 field recorders, as well as the Zaxcom Max mixer, the Tascam DR70, and other compatible devices. It features an internal honeycomb frame which can securely hold your recorder/mixer, as well as other gear such as wireless transmitters.

The bag gives you a transparent TPU top for easy viewing; this top can be placed however you'd like to facilitate readability on the job. Additionally, the bag is accessible from six different angles, allowing you to access and arrange gear however you choose. Two pockets are on hand for ancillary gear, such as headsets, cables, and batteries. The OR-27 sports two handles, as well as an included shoulder strap.

Mixer Positioning
The inside of the OR-28 provides options for positioning your mixer in one of two ways; you can make use of a sponge or two lifts. The two features help you adjust your recorder/mixer to the positioning you need.
Sliding Secure Buckle System
The OR-28's sliding buckle system secures your mixer/recorder in place.

Less than ideal for Zoom F8N PRO

While the build quality and overall design are very good, the fit is off for the Zoom F8N PRO. When the recorder is placed so that the buttons can be reached reasonably well from the top, two of the XLR mic inputs are blocked by the bag frame and not usable. When I place the recorder so that all XLR inputs can be used (deeper down), the buttons are too far down in the bag for comfortable use. The bottom line, as I see it, is that the bag is not suitable for Zoom F8N PRO. I suspect I would have been better off with OR-30 but found out too late to save me from a poor product choice this time around.

I just received my OR-28 a couple of days back. I'm also using it with a Zoom F6, together with a set of wireless transmitters (Saramonics) for my grab-and-go, all-in-one audio rig for most of the video work that I do. The F6 and transmitters fit in with room to spare, like someone else mentioned. I still have space in there for my lav mics and other adaptors, tape, chest straps, stationary etc. I'm looking forward to doing some modifications to make full use of the extra space. Depending on your needs I'd say the extra space can be a blessing or curse because things tend to jiggle around abit if you got nothing to hold them in place.

Could you fit a Zoom H6 in this bag? Was planning on upgrading to a better recording unit down the road but was really curious.

The Zoom H6 will fit into this bag, but because it has XLR mic connections on the two sides of the unit, you may have difficulty making it work when sources are connected. Access to these connections would also be limited. Perhaps, a reasonably-priced case such as the Zoom PCH-6 Protective Case for Zoom H6 Handy Recorder, BH #ZOZPCH6 could be used until you upgrade to a larger mixer.

No, the ORCA OR-28 Mini Audio Bag is a bit too small for the Sound Devices 833, but the ORCA OR-30 Audio Mixer Bag (B&H # OROR30) and the ORCA OR-330 Sound Bag (B&H # OR330) are both designed for use with the 833. Other compatible options include the Arco AS-A10G Small Bag for Audio Field Recorder (B&H # ARASA10G), the Sachtler Lightweight Audio Bag - Small (B&H # SALWABS), and the PortaBrace MXC-833 Custom-Fit Carrying Case (B&H # POMXC833).You can find more compatible options for cases and bags listed under the "Accessories" tab on the item page for the Sound Devices 833 8-Channel / 12-Track Multitrack Field Recorder (B&H # SO833).

Per Tascam the dimensions on the DR680MKII is - 8.5" × 2.2" × 7.4" / 216.4 × 56 × 188.4 mm The OR-28 internal measurements are - 8.46” x 4.52” x 6.49” making it too small for the OR-28. The OR-280 would be a better fit with internal of 9.44” x 4.52” x 7.87”

The interior of the ORCA OR-28 Mini Audio Bag is 8.5 x 6.5 x 4.5" (215 x 165 x 115 mm) and the dimensions of the Tascam DR-60DmkII Field Recorder are 5.2 x 3.7 x 3.1" (133 x 93.2 x 78 mm) so the DR-60DmkII Recorder will fit inside of the OR-28 Bag.
