Yamaha YDP-163 overview

  • 1Description

The dark rosewood Arius YDP-163R from Yamaha is an 88-key digital piano featuring a Graded Hammer-3 action keyboard with synthetic ivory keytops, designed to emulate the feel of an acoustic piano and includes a stand and bench. It has damper, sostenuto, and soft foot pedals with continuous control, and provides playback from two oval speakers and built-in dual 20-watt amplifiers, or two 1/4" headphone jacks with Stereophonic Optimizer technology.

The piano allows for selecting between a soft, medium, hard, or fixed touch response to correspond to the performer's individual playing style. The PureCF sound engine powers ten built-in voices that are based on samples taken from the company's CFIIIS concert grand piano. And 192-note polyphony allows many of the most complex piano compositions to be played without any dropped notes, and with sustained notes ringing through faithfully.

Two voices can be layered for creating new sounds. A built-in two-track MIDI recorder allows for capturing a performance and playing it back. Using the feature, right- and left-hand performances can be recorded separately at any tempo, and then either hand can be played back by the piano for additional practice. Fifty songs are built in, allowing for additional learning opportunities.

88-key digital piano with stand, three-pedal unit, and bench
Pure CF Sound Engine features the recorded sounds of the Yamaha CFIIIS 9' concert grand piano
Graded Hammer (GH3) weighted keyboard mimics the touch of an acoustic piano, from the heavy feel in the lower register to a lighter touch in the upper octaves
White keys feature synthetic ivory keytops with good moisture-absorption properties, meaning that fingers won't slip even when playing for extended periods of time
Half-damper pedal control creates more detailed nuance and subtlety when playing, similar to pedaling on a grand piano, allowing for continuously increasing lengths of sustained notes, from slight to full
Stereo Sustain samples provide mellow reverberations when the player depresses the damper pedal
Damper Resonance provides broad and deep resonance when the pedal is used
192-note polyphony
Ten presets
Fifty preset songs built in and also presented as a music book
Recording function allows players to record performances with a single touch (compatible software is required for playback of the recorded data on a computer)
Two-track song recorder
Record the right and left hands separately for hands-separate practicing at any tempo—practice one hand, while the piano plays the other
Combine two voices together, such as piano and strings
Intelligent Acoustic Control (IAC) feature allows for playing at a lower volume in a quiet home environment without treble and bass loss
Volume dial automatically makes fine adjustments to the overall sound of the speaker system (EQ) when played at a low volume
Acoustic Optimizer physically adjusts the sound flow, controlling resonances and enriching the overall sound
Transpose keyboard up or down half an octave
Dual 20W amplifiers
Two built-in speakers
Dual headphone outputs with Stereophonic Optimizer that allows the sound of the piano to be perceived as coming from the body of the instrument rather than from the headphones
When connected to external speakers, the built-in speakers can be muted
Digital Piano Controller app has an interface optimized for iOS touch screens, adding a new functionality to the instrument
A standard USB cable can be used to connect the instrument to a computer or mobile device for creativity, entertainment or education

    Yamaha YDP-163 reviews

Arius YDP-163R Digital Piano with Bench (Dark Rosewood) is rated 4.9 out of 5 by 10.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Piano I really like this piano. I think it's a great choice for beginners due the quality sound and construction. The synthetic ivory keys on the YDP-163 feel great and definitely feel nicer than the YDP-143 due to the 143 keys being plastic. If you are a beginner or even advanced and want a really affordable piano with a great sound and quality build this is a great choice. The only note I should make is that if you are looking to record often, this piano may not be your best choice as it does not have any outputs other that 2 headphones outs. It does record internally and saves the song as a MIDI file that you can then transfer to a computer via a USB port but your traditional recording options are very limited. I have not tried connecting to a DAW via the USB yet so I don't know how well if at all that will work. From what I understand it only saves MIDI. (which is fine if you are audio post savvy)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best console piano, period! Best is relative, of course, but if you want a console-style digital piano with no added frills (such as tons of voices, styles, etc.) the YDP-163 can't be beat, as the fundamentals (piano action and piano sound) are superlative -- and construction quality is excellent, of course, as with anything Yamaha builds. This GH3 piano action is significantly less noisy that the Casio piano action, by the way.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Action Most realistic action and sound from all the digital pianos that I tested (up to $2000). A joy to play. Easy to set up.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy installation, great feel, and plenty loud! I did a lot of research on electronic pianos, and I am extremely satisfied with my purchase of the YDP-163. It's one of the pricier options, but its heavy weight, cabinet feel, and ivory keys are about as close to the real deal as you can get. The unit also gets plenty loud and was fairly easy to install by myself. I haven't really tested a whole lot of other pianos in its class, but the Graded Hammer keys feel way better and more real than most of the other < $1000 pianos I did test. Also, props to B&H for the free expedited shipping!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic I am a total piano snob, my daily driver is a Steinway B. I purchased this to have a second piano to accompany my kids as they do concertos. I picked it for the GH3 action and I have to say the piano exceeded my expectations. It plays well, feels great, sounds much louder than, say the Digital Grand by Yamaha I was considering. Most important, the sounds and touch and feel are about as good as I've experienced on any digital piano, even fancier clavinovas. I realized after purchasing that it has all the fancy features of the higher end models, but this model lacks as many buttons, so you have to use a little legend card that maps different piano keys to enable fancy features like reverb changing, tone and pitch adjustment, different voices etc. There is also a sweet iPad app that lets you record and control the piano with a touch screen, which makes it even more awesome. Highly Recommend!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nice piano for playing Pretty decent digital piano for beginners or intermediate players/learners. Synthetic ivory keys with GH3 sensors, which deliver more realistic feels and touches, are well worth a $500 difference from the cheaper model (YDP-143). The design is too minimal to look like a traditional standup piano, but it's cute and saves space. The included bench is pretty small and isn't adjustable for height. Overall, the construction of its stand parts is cheap (made of particle boards), but this is a musical instrument, not furniture.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautiful, compact alternative to full size piano Our previous piano, actually our son's, was a Yamaha U3 and it was a beauty. Unfortunately, we had to sell it since we were moving a long distance into a very, very dry climate. I mourned that piano for quite a while. Recently I realized that NOT having a piano made that hole in my life feel even bigger, so I started researching digital alternatives because our house is small. I decided on a Yamaha YDP 163 and it is beautiful for my needs. The sound is amazing as is the key action. I could not be happier to have this addition to my life. I particularly love that I can plug in my noise-canceling headphones (Bose Quiet Comfort 25 - highly recommend) and practice without broadcasting how out of practice I am. After we assembled it and plugged it in, I listened to one of the 50 beautiful classical pieces loaded into the system. Then I got to play, but not until after I sobbed for about 5 minutes. Best investment I have made for myself. B&H is a top-notch company.
