Olympus FD-1 overview

  • 1Description

Create soft, beautiful lighting for close-up and macro photography by attaching the Olympus FD-1 Flash Diffuser to your Stylus TOUGH TG-1, TG-2, TG-3, TG-4, or TG-5 digital camera. It mounts to the front of your camera where it channels and diffuses light from the built-in flash. The light is projected in a ring around the lens, a common trick for close-up imaging, at distances from 0.8 to 11.8". There is also a light intensity adjustment lever with high or low output settings, with a 1.4-stop difference between them, in order to work with a range of subject matter. Additionally, when using a TG-4 with firmware version 2.0, users will have access to additional settings and features.

    Olympus FD-1 reviews

FD-1 Flash Diffuser is rated 3.8 out of 5 by 6.
Rated 2 out of 5 by from Good addition for macro This diffuser improves flash light dispersal for macro photography. It is not a ring light, it simply has a reflector that redirects the light to a patch to the upper left of the lens. The rest of the ring is just a white reflective surface. When very close to the subject, there is still flash glare to the upper left and shadow to the lower right. For the money, this should have had some sort of means to direct light all the way around the ring. Lost a star for that. The instructions say the LED won't function with this on, but actually the light receiver accepts light from the LED as well. The light guides are somewhat opaque (to diffuse the light), which cuts down on LED intensity, but it can still be used for focusing. The upgraded firmware (to 2.0) has a setting for the FD-1, which adjusts some of the camera settings automatically to optimize flash macro. With the setting off, the camera defaults to a large F-stop (small aperture), probably to maximize depth of field. With it on, it uses a small F-stop (wide open), probably to maximize image quality. Unfortunately, that also creates a very narrow depth of field. Also, for some reason when the FD-1 setting is selected, you can no longer use the LED for taking images, nor can you use automatic focus stacking or the ladybug setting (automatic focus-stack compilation). They have done this because the FD-1 setting forces the flash to stay on, which is a problem.... you should be able to turn the flash off and use the focus-stack settings. As it is, you have to leave FD-1 mode to focus-stack or use the LED for photographing. And setting or leaving FD-1 mode is very clumsy, requiring a minimum of 10 menu clicks to accomplish. Lost another star for that. This item is just cheap plastic, probably cost $2 to make at a toy factory, but it is quite pricey to buy. Considering its limitations, I think it is marginally worth the purchase price. Lose another star for that.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Decent diffuser, unique dedicated accessory This is for TG4 (full functions) but I use it with my TG3 (with some features not available). It does diffuse to soften face shots. But I think it is overpriced. I really like LG-1, LED light guide, since the camera can take very close up photos, this device is almost necessary if you want to use close up capability of TG3 and TG4 cameras.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Great Accessory for the Olympus TG4 The Olympus FD-1 flag diffuser is a handy and inexpensive accessory for your Olympus TG4 camera that allows for the softening of the flash strobe for close up photography. it's easy to install onto the TG4 camera by removing the camera's integral accessory ring and then mounting the FD-1 diffuser to the camera similar to any bayonet mount type camera lens. The light diffuser feature of this accessory is perfect for preventing image hot spots due the flash source being too close to the object being photographed. The FD-1, for its size and price, is a Great Accessory for the TG4 sturdy travel camera.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from OK but not great I thought the light from the diffuser would be more uniform but the flash comes through a window in the diffuser and creates a hot spot. Just have to be aware of it and adjust accordingly.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Distributes Light Nicely Great for macro work
    Date published: 2016-05-24
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good for close work only OK this works well as intended, but is limited to close up work up to a foot away. The directions are a simple diagram. If you've used interchangeable lenses before, this is a piece of cake to install. If not, then take you're time to learn just how the interlocking mechanism works. This unit is high quality plastic and diffuses the flash softly and evenly.
