Blackmagic Design HYPERD/AVIDAS74K overview

  • 1Description

Add professional monitoring and high-quality recording to virtually any camera with the Blackmagic Video Assist 4K. It features a 7" 1920 x 1200 display to help you frame and focus your shots, and provides 6G-SDI and HDMI inputs for recording the video output from professional and consumer cameras. The Video Assist records 10-bit 4:2:2 video up to UHD 4K at 30p to high-speed UHS-II SDHC/XC memory cards using industry-standard Apple ProRes and Avid DNx codecs. A touchscreen interface allows you to adjust settings and access monitoring features such as histogram, zebra, focus peaking, audio meters, timecode display, and more. To power the monitor, a 110-240V AC power adapter is included. It also has dual battery slots on the rear that power the monitor using Canon LP-E6 type batteries.

Supports 4K UHD (3840 x 2160) Video.
7" Full HD Display
The front of the monitor features a bright 7" 1920 x 1200 display for evaluating your shots. On-screen controls allow you to vary the brightness and contrast depending on the shooting situation, and the wide 135° viewing angle makes it easy for multiple crew members to watch at the same time. It even auto rotates so no matter which way you mount it, the picture is always displayed correctly.
Touchscreen Interface
The 7" display provides intuitive capacitive touchscreen controls. Swipe gestures make it simple and quick to show or hide settings, such as capture resolution and format, as well as screen brightness and contrast. Swipe in another direction and you'll have access to additional controls, recording status, histogram, audio level, timecode, battery status, and more. The controls have a semi-transparent overlay, so you can still be able to keep an eye on every part of your shots.
6G-SDI and HDMI Connections
Video and audio are captured using 6G-SDI and HDMI 2.0 inputs, allowing you to record from professional cameras and camcorders, as well as popular DSLRs and mirrorless cameras. The 6G-SDI input even allows you to monitor Ultra HD footage. Loop-through outputs are provided so you can simultaneously display the live video or recorded clips on larger screens like HD broadcast monitors or HDMI projectors while you monitor and record on the Video Assist. Audio is embedded in the output and can also be monitored on headphones using the 3.5mm stereo jack.
10-Bit 4:2:2 ProRes Recording
The Blackmagic Video Assist records your video at the 10-bit 4:2:2 quality. Files are recorded on to high-speed UHS-I or UHS-II SDHC/XC cards using ProRes (HQ, 422, LT, Proxy) codecs. These are industry-standard formats, so you can start editing immediately without having to convert the files. Recording can be automatically triggered on your Blackmagic Video Assist from the start/stop button on compatible cameras, so you can remain focused on getting the shot without having to worry about operating additional gear.

Note: High-speed UHS-II SD cards are required for Ultra HD recording. High-speed UHS-II or UHS-I cards are required for HD recording.
Compatible SD Cards
The following cards have been tested and approved by Blackmagic for use with the Video Assist 4K:

Ultra HD
Transcend 64GB UHS-II SDXC
Lexar 64GB 2000x UHS-II SDXC

All UHS-I and UHS-II cards should be fast enough to record compressed HD video up to 60 fps, but it is recommended that you use Blackmagic's Disk Speed Test software to test and make sure. The software is downloaded from Blackmagic's website.
A universal 110V to 240V AC power supply so you can use the Video Assist anywhere. Plug the AC adapter into the 12V DC input you get continuous power, or run off of dual Canon compatible LP-E6 type batteries. When connected to AC power, the batteries can be charged in parallel while the Video Assist is still being used.

    Blackmagic Design HYPERD/AVIDAS74K reviews

Video Assist 4K 7" HDMI/6G-SDI Recording Monitor is rated 3.6 out of 5 by 38.
Rated 2 out of 5 by from Does what its designed to do, BUT... Unit is well built and has a nice bright display, but unfortunately the screen blacks out every few seconds with varying intervals when used with my Sony A6300 via HDMI. The blackouts however do not effect recording. Blackmagic support said this is a known issue and they do not have a fix available right now, but they do not rule out one in a future firmware upgrade. The blackouts don't happen with my Canon 5D III via HDMI or my Blackmagic Production 4K camera via SDI. This problem may apply to other Sony cameras but I don't own any other model. There are no recording issues onto the unit when using the recommended SD cards. I would give it 4 stars if it were not for this compatibility issue.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from unit is crashing in continuous recording I did a post recently rating this unit 4 star but with further testing I found out that I can not record more then 60 minutes without the unit to go crazy the screen freezes and then get progressively white with weird lines and artefacts!!! I did the test 3 times with same result when I get to the end of the third 64gb card in 4k 30p prores LT the unit go crazy! it seams fine if I interrupt the recording before the 60 min mark but if you are looking forward to get this unit for hotswap continuous recording DO NOT BUY!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Yes I would but another one of these if i needed two. Works really well.. Very robust Nice sharp bright screen, and records what I need in the formats I need. It does have some limitations as to the SD Cards it can use, and I bought two 128GB versions of the 64GB cards they recommend and while they do Record in this unit, they won't Format in this unit. Weird. I have to format them on my computer. I know they are updating the firmware all the time so maybe there will be an update to fix this. Now I wonder why anyone would pay $700 for just a 7 inch Video Monitor when a few dollars more would get you an entire recorder.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Getting better... This product essentially works, but only after upgrades, RMAs and twiddling. I expect that it will get better over time. But this is a Blackmagic product after all. Or to paraphrase Winston Churchill, Blackmagic will eventually ship a good product, but only after exhausting all the alternatives. For the price and given the level of video I do, this product is good. So I give it four stars. However if you are a meticulous pro, you will probably find the current version of the product disappointing.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from very good codec to pair with gh4 works grate wonderful screen perfect build quality only thing is not mutch assis (falscolor, waveform) and be careful to get good sd cards, the one suggested by b&h in accessory are no match as for now only the lexar 2000x and trecend 180mbs are good (the trescend drop frame in proress HQ at 4K 30p after about 5min of recording but proress 422 can go on for ever I did a 128Gb continuous recording test with it ) AND IT IS NOT SUPPORTING ANY OF MY SDHC CARS ONLY SDXC) I give it 4 stars but futur firmware update should make it a 5 star product. And now sd card choice are limited but this will change soon I belive.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Working well - but did have an issue Bought this item to work in many areas; on video camera, for playback, and recording of events. Out of the box, I was highly upset. I read reviews about greenish tints and such. I figured they fixed this with a firmware update. I took a chance and boy was this screen green. I contacted BlackMagic and after a while we actually realized that this monitor came from the factory with some type of peaking type setting on. We went into the menus and turned it off. In my opinion the screen is very good. Forgive my video ignorance - audio guy. Anyway, I love this thing so far.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Recorder Actually, I did not buy this for the 4K feature. I bought it for use as a master recorder in a portable multi cam live switched environment. The two big selling points for me were dual SD card slots that allow relay recording and the direct, balanced audio inputs. And the price, can't forget the price. One of the pleasant surprises was a nice robust headphone amp. Clean audio that you can hear in a live environment. The Prores recording on SD cards is hard to beat for quality and budget!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not ready The product is ok, it's just not ready. There seems to be a problem when monitoring uhd signals (3840x2160) because the screen flickers in and out intermittently, but it doesn't happen when monitoring hd signals. Also there are only two codecs that can be used. I think at least two more codecs should be included. In addition I believe a way to add LUTs should be added. Maybe with some solid firmware updates this will be a contender but as of right now it is a lacking piece of gear.
