Aputure LS C120t Overview

  • 1Description

The Light Storm LS C120t Tungsten LED Light from Aputure is a Chip on Board (COB) designed fixture with a 3000K color temperature that consumes a negligible amount of power while outputting 1032 fc of light at a distance of 1.6'. In addition to power efficiency this fixture also features accurate color rendering - 97 CRI and a 97 TLCI (Television Lighting Consistency Index) rating.

The LS C120t can be seen but not heard - ideal for sound sensitive environments. The intelligent cooling system employs temperature sensitive fans to regulate the heat. There's also an Auto/Force button that triggers maximum cooling. In any case, even at maximum power the fan noise doesn't exceed 18 dB - basically the sound of a person breathing.

The LS C120t's performance is backed up by its design. The all-aluminum construction goes through over a hundred fabrication steps. The reflector and accessory mount is the widely-used Bowens S-Type and the wired controller is also separated from the body of the light, making it lighter and reducing its size. There's also an included wireless remote that allows you to control on/off and dimming functions from as far away as 328'. The LS C120t is ready for worldwide use thanks to its 110-240 VAC power supply. You can also use its onboard V-mount battery plate for external battery power when mains power is unavailable. This LS C120t is delivered as a kit with a dedicated carrying bag to protect the light during travel and storage.

Accurate Color
The LS C120t features a CRI of 97 and a 3000K color temperature. Additionally, its TLCI also has been measured at up to 97. TLCI or Television Lighting Consistency Index, is the accurate measurement of color fidelity of a light source for broadcast use; a high rating shows that a light source will render colors well in a film or photography context. Therefore, the LS C120t will display natural color in both photo and video applications.
Auto/Force Model Powerful Temperature Control
The LS C120t has an intelligent temperature control system. The fan's rotation will be varied based on the correspondent ambient temperature. Furthermore, the fan will go to the maximum of rotation when you press the Auto/Force model. This complex fan system is convenient for both improving the dissipation efficiency and light lifespan in complex shooting environments.
Quiet Operation
Most lights utilizing a fan system are too loud and not suitable for film or video production, however, the LS C120t with its built-in electric fan produces only 18 dB noise like a person's normal breathing. That means fan noise is negligible, even if your LS C120t runs at maximum output.
Professional Bowens Mount
LS C120t uses an industry-popular Bowens S-Type front mount providing the option of using the wide range of accessories from the many manufacturers that use this mount.
Portable and Lightweight
Portable and lightweight are two characteristics many photographers and filmmakers can appreciate in equipment that's often used and the LS C120t weighs in at 3.5 lb.
Separated Light Control Operation
The LS C120t has a separated light control design. This allows users to control illumination on the controller box; you no longer have to operate from the back of the light, greatly increasing the balance and reducing the weight, as well as the time spent adjusting the fixture.
Intelligent Design
Featuring an aircraft grade aluminum body, the LS C120t is tough and durable. More than 100 fabrication procedures such as extrusion, cutting, trim, sandblasting, and laser engraving are employed.
Effective Battery Power Solution
The LS C120t is able to meet various shooting requirements with battery mount options; the V-mount battery plate is ideal for situations where mains power is unavailable.
328' Wireless Remote Control
Using 2.4 GHz FSK technologies, the LS C120t can power on or off or adjust brightness wirelessly, even at distances up to 328'.
The LS C120t has the convenience of an integrated handgrip for adjusting the light's direction and quick packing.

    Aputure LS C120t Reviews

Light Storm LS C120t Tungsten LED Light Kit with V-Mount Battery Plate is rated 4.0 out of 5 by 33.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good light. Failed on me,willing to give it a 2nd chance I just gave this a four star, because I had very high expectations, which for the most part, It has met. I bought a pair of these lights, and the LS Panels in September, 2016. After 3 months, one COBt stopped working. Tweeted them, no one replied for 3 days. Finally sent an email and now we have started the RMA process. And this is the main reason the light is getting 4. I do not do reviews for atleast 3 months. And B&H should not send a review request after a week or two of someone using any gear. The opinion is not mature enough to share with others. If i reviewed this item when I got the email to do so, I would give it glowing recommendations for it to fail 3 months into using it. As for performance, It is very very good. Great light quality, nice power output (Not 1.5K tungsten as they advertise. NOPE. Not even 1K. (With the default reflector) ) But bright enough to give some very good results. Done music videos, cooperate videos and they are good. I will add a comment based on how they treat this return /warranty replacement.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Very Unreliable There is so much to love about these lights - their compact size, reasonably light weight, sturdy-looking construction, Bowens mount, and fairly strong (for an LED) light output. They can make an excellent tool for video interviews, in particular, and paired with the large soft-box, can produce a beautiful quality of light. When they work, they work wonderfully. BUT. I've had TWO of these lights fail on me already. In the first case, black smoke started coming out of the light during a shoot. Fortunately my assistant noticed it quickly and turned the light off. B&H sent me another one, which worked for a while...until it, too, stopped working. In that case, I was seconds away from doing a video interview for a major client, and when I pressed the 'on' button, nothing happened. I tried several more times, but the light was totally unresponsive. According to the Aputure guy I sent it back to, an IC in the controller box had burned out. This was a little strange, since I hadn't used the light very much. I would recommend STAYING AWAY from these lights. Hopefully Aputure will clean up its act, and in another few years these lights will be more reliable. But at the moment, they're just not suitable for professional work.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Had to return it. I loved it.? The light was amazing.? Along with the soft box, produces beautiful soft light for interviews.? But on my first professional shoot, it died about 10mins before rolling.? I had to scramble and come up with a different lighting solution on the fly.? Later, I tried the fan trick people have talked about online.? Didn't fix my issue.? Turns out there was something wrong with the light.? Sounds like others are having the same problem now with the 120d dying.? Had to return it vs. exchanging.? Didn't want to have to constantly worry if a new 120d was gonna die as well on a professional shoot.? Hopefully Aputure makes an updated, more reliable version.? Would love to use it.? I use other Aputure lights like the Amarans and Tri-8s and they work great.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from 4 connections to go light to AC outlet This light should be seen as an over price light that will not last in the gear kit for more than two years. It takes four connections to go from the light to an AC outlet - absolutely a PIA! to use on location. Maybe as a battery powered unit it will be acceptable. I'm finding the light to be very blue when used in conjunction with normal window light and it does NOT put out enough light to be used in as a powerful key in portrait settings where there are windows in the background (just window light not direct sun) The location of the umbrella hole does not move if the light is tilted so your umbrella is always going to be 90 degrees to the stand. I see that this light was designed on paper but not refined by actual users who work on location. It doesn't even come with a cap to protect the led chip (bulb)!!! Who want to carry all their lights in individual bags with the reflector attached!?! Only reason for the 3 stars is hopefully with a battery it becomes a quick fill light when not needing a lot and it's not another panel light

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Worth the purchase The 120D by Aputure is excellent and here's why. 1. It's small can fit into your carr y on roller bags if you leave room for it. 2. Battery operated 3. Tough 4. Color accurate 5. Extremely bright 6. Has a Bowens S mount so it can take any modifiers made for that mount. If you want soft light I strongly recommend the Light dome softbox that Aputure makes (for $150) or the new mini softbox that they should be releasing soon for $99. Overall I wanted a light that was portable, cool, light, battery operated and just well designed. The Aputure 120D suites my needs quite well.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from High Performance LED lighting but... I like these lights alot. They are lightweight, portable and can be powered by v-mounts. Plus, they are bowens compatible and provide excellent color accuracy, what more can you ask for! But..., the light output just isn't there or should I say they are not as efficient as what a 120 watts of power can provide you, which is a bit disappointing. Because I was really hoping to replace my current lighting setup (the Pixapro 100D's) since they can't be powered by battery. Comparing them to the Pixapro's which is rated at a 100 watts of power consumption, the apertures are only about half as bright. For those who are considering, I would rate the 120D's as a solid 50-60w light, closer to a 60w light.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Stopped working... This was the best light I ever owned... it was giving me incredible results, but on the 6th time that it was turned on after 3 minutes it stopped working. ?This was a HUGE disappointment. ?Aputure really needs to figure out what is going on with their quality control. ?Paying clients don't want to hear that your light stopped working. ?Smh...

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Light does not last I am looking at all the glowing reviews and quite frankly I am puzzled. I bought three of these lights less than a year ago. Two of them have already failed. I cannot tell you how disappointing this is. The manufacturer sent me two new control units, however the second one they sent me was defective from the moment I plugged it in. There are so many other manufacturers out there. Please look elsewhere. These lights will not stand the test of time.

What speeding do I need to fit my Chimera small video softball to the 120d?
    Asked by: Vincent L.
As the Aputure Light Storm LS C120d LED Light uses the Bowens S-mount for connecting light modifiers to the LED light fixture, if you need a speedring to connect the Chimera Video Pro Plus Small Softbox 24 x 32 to the Aputure Light Storm LS C120d LED Light, I would recommend either the Chimera Quick Release Speed Ring for Bowens Original Series, B&H # CHSRQRBO, or the Impact Speed Ring for Impact, Bowens S, Westcott & Aputure, B&H # IMSRIMPV2, for your usage needs.

Can I power the 120d with Sony NPF batteries with an NPF to V mount adapter? Does anyone have any experience with this and was it problematic?
    Asked by: Chuck N.
The Genaray SpectroLED Essential Sony NP Battery Adapter for V-Mount Devices, B&H # GESPENPBA, may work for your planned usage needs. Do note that the adapter requires a minimum of 14V to operate properly and requires both batteries to be installed to power the unit.
