Canon PRO-4000 overview

  • 1Description

Create stunning photographic prints with the imagePROGRAF PRO-4000 44" Professional Photographic Inkjet Printer from Canon. Able to handle media up to 44" wide and with a maximum resolution of 2400 x 1200 dpi, users will be able to create high-quality documents and graphics with sharp text at exceptional sizes. In order to deliver prints with speed and consistency the PRO-4000 has a few tricks up its sleeve, including Canon's FINE technology with a 1.28"-wide 12-channel print head, a twelve-color LUCIA PRO pigmented ink set with Chroma Optimizer, a high-precision mechanical platform, and the L-COA PRO high-speed image processing engine. This design also means that there is no switching required when working with matte black or photo black inks. Additionally, this model offers a built-in color densitometer that uses a three-color LED and condenser lens to ensure peak performance.

The PRO-4000 utilizes a Sub-Ink Tank system to squeeze every last drop out of your cartridges along with providing smooth swaps even in the midst of a print job. An integrated 320GB hard drive furthers the unit's capabilities by allowing it to work with large documents easily. For operating the device, a large 3.5" color LCD touchscreen is available and a directly available USB port permits printing from a thumb drive. Additionally, this printer has wired and wireless networking thanks to both Ethernet and Wi-Fi connectivity and it has USB 2.0 for a simple connection to a computer.

12-Color LUCIA PRO Ink Set
Using a twelve-color system of pigment-based inks as well as a Chroma Optimizer, this set will deliver vivid images with clear details along with enhanced gloss uniformity, improved scratch resistance, better reproduction of dark areas, and reduced graininess.
PF-10 Print Head
A PF-10 1.28"-wide print head with 18,432 nozzles and anti-clogging FINE technology allows for fast, precise printing that is checked by 27 individual sensors. For improved performance, this system uses twelve channels with twelve colors, resulting in fast print speeds and no ink switching required when working with both matte and glossy media. The print head is also wider than earlier models, allowing for the printer to only need one and achieve a more compact design.
L-COA PRO High-Speed Image Processing Engine
Utilizing three processing chips, the PRO-4000 can precisely manage large image files and control ink layout for optimal performance and high-resolution prints.
Color Calibration
Featuring an integrated color densitometer with a three-color LED and a condenser lens, users will be able to recalibrate the PRO-4000 at nearly any time to ensure consistently colored prints. The Device Management Console software furthers your abilities by enabling calibrations and checking of print statuses of up to 50 units from a remote location.
Optional Multifunction Roll System
This optional system enables a second roll of media to be loaded or to set up a bi-directional media take-up unit. The dual-roll feeding mechanism allows media of different types or sizes to be loaded at once for fast swapping or simply having two of the same rolls for high-volume jobs. A bi-directional rewinding method allows users to set up the second roll as a take-up unit and users can choose whether the printed surface is on the inside or outside of the roll.
USB Direct Printing
An accessible USB port permits the use of a thumb drive for direct printing of PDF and JPG files without the use of a computer.
Sub-Ink Tank System and Large-Capacity Cartridges
The Sub-Ink Tank System lets users squeeze every last drop of ink in the tank before needing to replace it, also enabling cartridge swaps in the middle of job without any issues. The PRO-4000 also accepts large-capacity cartridges from the PFI-1100, PFI-1300, and PFI-1700 series with capacities of 160mL, 330mL, and 700mL, respectively.
Multipositional Basket
The basket can be freely adjusted as a catch basket, for flatbed stacking, and as a slope for print display.
320GB Hard Drive
Holds job data in protected storage to alleviate the workload on the PC or Mac and allows for easy access from remote workstations.
Print Studio Pro Software
Produce large-format photographic prints with ease with Print Studio Pro software which helps streamline your workflow. This 16-bit software is compatible with Digital Photo Professional, Adobe Photoshop, and Adobe Lightroom and features roll paper preview mode, contrast reproduction, batch edits, Favorites settings, and the ability to print multiple images on one page.

    Canon PRO-4000 reviews

imagePROGRAF PRO-4000 44" Professional Photographic Large-Format Inkjet Printer is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 8.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Extremely pleased I purchased this printer because I was frustrated with $1500 heads plus installation for my epson. I'm not dissing the quality of my Epson, but there is an issue with their heads plugging up and installation is not a user function. I quality of the Canon has been excellent and the set up was a breeze. It's also great that you can use it wirelessly. The only issue I had was the shear weight of the unit, you'll need at least 4 guys in good shape to lift this printer unto it's stand. I had a minor bump in setting up the wireless connection, but Canon's helpline cleared up the issue quickly and stayed on the line until everything was a working. I believe Canon's inks are slightly more expensive than Epson's. Overall I'm very pleased.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Very good initial impressions I can only speak to the setup and first impressions after a week of use. Other than being extremely heavy, it was very easy to assemble and set up the printer. A strong friend and I lifted each end to place it on the stand. Priming and wireless setup was a breeze, print head calibration used 1 included sheet, and my first print (24x36 on Canon Pro Luster roll) was color accurate and looked great. The machine is silent in sleep mode, moderately loud while running. I'll post again after a longer period of use.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great images, easy set up! I bought this to replace an older 8400 model that was broken during transit. At the sale price offered and the rebates available it was a no brainer. I am small print shop and needed to make sure I had a quality printer that I could handle in my small space. I love the prints that come out of it and have no regret. My only issue was missing ICC Profiles for some of the papers I had from the previous printer. I will be contacting customer service for a fix as I hear in the forums that isn't a big deal.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great looking large format prints Great large format printer for the price. Easy to setup and start printing. Colors look great on canvas and photo paper. Prints quickly after spooling (spooling takes a while if connecting via wifi; may want to have a cord connection). Printer is large and heavy, so be prepared with helpers to move it to your work area and have ample space for it. Canon help desk was very helpful when I needed help adding a canvas profile that was missing from the initial setup options.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great fine art printer I have now been working with this printer for about 3 weeks. The set up was fast and easy. You will need help to move and install. The printer took myself about a week to tune the output to what I am use to seeing from the older style Epson which this replaced. The blacks on this printer are deeper than I am use to and took a little time to tweak so the the shadow areas did not block up. This is the first printer I am really happy eight the contrast and blacks on matte paper. I have generally printed my fine art images on Baryta paper. The colors are very vibrant and the depth and detail on the prints are amazing. I have also been able to run test prints at 13x19 sheet with no problems. The loading system is very fast and easy. loading both roll and sheet works smooth and fast. I have not used Canon's printer plug-in so cannot comment on the program. I print direct from Lightroom or photoshop. I bought a full set of inks with he printer and have not had to use them as the original inks are still running strong. I have run about 3 full rolls of 24" paper plus some sheet papers in17" and 13" and do not have any low inks. The black and white prints took a little longer to dial in than the color. The printer generally went a little sepia which is not bad, however took a little work to print neutral black and white. I am use to the chrome optimizer and how it affects prints. I have a pro-10 as a proof printer. The little pro-10 is what led me to move by larger printer to Canon also. I will wrap up by saying at this point this is one of the best printer's I have worked with. Color, blacks and the depth are truly amazing.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from One of the two best printer I own I am so impressed with the quality prints of my prograf 1000, I wanted much bigger of this goodness that I recently added the prograf 4000 to accompany the little brother the prograf 1000 and it's just as impressive at 44" as it is at 8". Unboxing and setting up this printer is very easy but make sure you have 4 good friends that had their breakfast to set this big boy (300lbs) on his pedestal. This is one solid fast, quality printer that once you make a print on this, you will be totally addicted. Everything about it says workhorse. The only complaints is that I have to up my photography game because this big guy will show your faults on a massive scale and you don't want to have a bad photo printed at these ink price.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from First print was right on. I'm not a professional; I'm a very particular high end non-professional. I'm using it for prints and graphic arts for my self, spouse and friends. Given the huge costs of outsourcing large prints, and in particular the all too frequent need to re-print images, I anticipate a break even in less than a year. It's a beast to unload, un-crate and install. Once assembled, start up was effortless. With Canon paper and software, my first print after setup, calibration and configuration was right on. Custom paper took a bit to get calibration and setting right, but really no complaint. Canon software gets an 'OK'. I don't have real operating costs yet, since I have not yet needed to replace a full set of ink. I also own the ImagePROGRAPH-100 and initial media and ink costs appear far lower for the -4000, - so much lower that I am sheet feeding the -4000 everything from 8" and larger rather than use the -1000. Image quality is exactly as expected. Speed is great, considering I connect via Wi-Fi. I haven't had a paper mis-feed or ink issue of any sort. The only complaint is confusing and massive documentation. The online manual is 961 pages! Even at this size, some information I would appreciate is missing - such as an explanation of when various self cleaning an print heat checks occur and related ink usage and user options....
