Zoom Q2n overview

  • 1Description

As a musician, having a camera like the Zoom Q2n Handy Video Recorder lets you easily record yourself, whether for the intent of practicing or building a fan base. Video clips are recorded as high-quality MOV files in 1080p or 720p resolutions at either 24 or 30 fps onto convenient microSD cards. The fixed-focus wide-angle lens with a 160° FOV can capture you and your instrument from only a few feet away, ensuring that the microphones can pick up sound clearly. A wide f/2.0 aperture on the lens can produce clear images in dimly lit situations and is augmented by ten selectable scene modes that correspond to popular performance situations. These modes include 'Concert Light'—which automatically adjusts for changing lighting conditions—to 'Concert Lo-Lit' for dimly lit rooms. An automatic setting, which chooses the optimal scene mode based on ambient light, is also available.

The Q2n houses its stereo condenser mics arranged in an X/Y pattern for clear stereo imaging without phase cancellation issues. Since the mics can handle sound pressure levels up to 120 dB, the Q2n won't shy away from loud rock stages. Audio can be recorded separately from video and saved directly to high-quality WAV files at up to 24-bit/96 kHz.

Plugging the Q2n into your computer or iOS device via USB (may require separately available hardware) unlocks even more functionality. Open up your DAW and you can record directly to new or existing projects. Alternatively, the Q2n can be used as a high-quality webcam for streaming over the web using YouTube Live or other popular streaming platforms.

For power, the Q2n conveniently uses two AA batteries (included) which offer up to two hours of recording time in 1080p, or three hours at 720p. A 1/4"-20 tripod thread lets you secure the Q2n to any standard tripod or mounting accessory for versatile placement options. Whether on the road recording impromptu sound ideas, or reaching out to your fan base over the web, the Q2n can be a valuable tool to any musician.

Sound Quality
High-resolution 24-bit/96 kHz audio recording and SPL handling up to 120 dB ensures clean recordings from nearly any source that will hold up through post-production and publishing.
Wide-Angle Lens
The Q2n features a 160-degree wide-angle lens, and it records in 720p or 1080p HD resolution using 24 or 30 fps frame rates. An f/2.0 aperture makes the Q2n perfect for musicians who perform in a wide variety of lighting environments. Plus, a color LCD screen makes it easy to create the perfect shot or review your videos.
Audio-Only Mode
The Q2n is also capable of recording audio only. Simply use the 'Camera Off' setting to capture demos or live performances in stereo sound using the built-in X/Y mics.
External Connections
The Q2n features a 3.5mm (1/8") stereo input jack that lets you connect external mics and other audio devices. And the 3.5mm (1/8") stereo output jack makes it simple to listen to audio with headphones, on your home audio system, or even in your car.

To view your video recording in high definition, you can connect to an HDMI TV using the micro-HDMI type D output. A USB port allows for connection to a computer or iOS device (requires separately available adapter) so you can use the Q2n as a web camera for live streaming, as a USB microphone for podcasts, or as a card reader to transfer recordings (computer connection only).

    Zoom Q2n reviews

Q2n Handy Video Recorder is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 52.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good but needs some tweaking yet. Zoom has a winner with the q2n however this 1st generation is a little buggy and battery life is terrible. Both myself and my piano player use the q2n to record our jazz fusion quartet. Pros- Good sound quality and video. Small easy set up and a cool design. Cons- Horrible battery life. Expect about 1 hour of battery life while recording before you have to change out for new, or just get the A/C adaptor. -Its a little buggy yet. Sometimes it will fragment files. Both my piano player and I have had the same issues with messed up files. All in all this is a awesome little video/audio recorder for the aspiring musician.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I love the simplicity and great sound quality This little recorder is dead simple to operate, the video quality is acceptable for what it is, and the sound quality is outstanding. The Auto-Level feature works well, and I like that you can play back a sample of your recording directly from the onboard speaker (instant gratification). I keep lithium batteries installed for a backup, but use a Juice Pack for live recording... it will go all night with my external battery. Pros: Great sound quality Small footprint Easy operation Cons: Battery life is going to be short. Get an external battery. This should come with a lens cap, instead of that being an extra option ($$).

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Q2n video recorder A very nice device with great sounding mics. Check out the video. It tells the story. There are some small bad things. The lens cap and lens shade don't fit well, fall off with ease and can get lost. You need the lens shade installed when recording or you get rainbow prism effect in your videos so lose it and cry trying to replace it. The zipper handles on the case break off right away with lite use. The view finder is so small I have trouble pointing the recorder properly but you adjust and figure it out by general pointing. All in all a great tool with minor issues that can be overcome. I LOVE IT!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Revommended I've used this on and off for about a week whilst mounted on top of a tripod. Pros: - small and mobile - extremely easy and intuitive interface - good quality picture - good quality sound capture just need to make sure you do adjust the volume input before you start - can be powered from USB Cons - battery life is around 2 hours, and make sure yr settings are set to auto power off so you don't drain the batteries - windows 10 on PC doesn't recognise and play the audio when playing the resulting movie file. The mac plays it just fine. Not sure if this is a codec issue or something else specific to my PC only. - the lenses could be potentially scratched in transport if thrown in a bag. Really need to get a foam cover for it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great product Works as described, a video camera to live capture your band, and nothing more. No stabilizer so hand held is a big maybe. The zoom is digital so it looses resolution on higher zoom levels. Battery is good for 2 hours max on HD capture, so I run a USB battery pack, mount it on a tripod or clamp arm and leave it on for the entire gig, the closer to the band the better. It automatically creates a new file every 18:37 minutes, with very little loss in between. 128G card=about 10 hours in HD 24. It's way better than your friend in the crowd with their iPhone picking up ambient crowd noise. All and all it's a great product for the price, just keep in mind it's a set up and leave type device so you can review how the gig went later and have something decent to post on line, way better than a cell phone video. If you want to do more than get a hand held video cam. I'm very impressed with the features vs price :)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Way better than my go pros! I picked up two of these guys to use at shows. I have been using go pros for every thing but the audio is always blown out. These Q2n's sound great and the video is not 4 k but still looks great at 1080. I do how ever use the AC adapters along with the batteries so I do not have the battery issue. So glad I found out about them and will be ordering more. The menu structure is also very easy to use. Not a lot of options to mess up if you are not familiar with ISO and shutter speeds. Very user friendly!!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Loving it Certainly for the price it's totally incredible. Extremely small and light! Easy to use and intuitive controls. Yes the AA battery life isn't great but so far I've had success powering it via an external battery. Very happy with this unit.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Q2n a musician's dream! This could very well be the best camera I've used yet to capture live music performances. I've tried the Kodak Z-8i, the Sony Webbie and various other cell phone based cameras and one of the factors has always been the less than adequate audio quality, particularly in venues where the sound pressure levels are very high. The Zoom Q2n is designed with the performing musician in mind. Granted, some of the testing I've done isn't in the true design usage parameters, but the results of my testing show me that when I DO use the camera as it's designed to be used I will be completely satisfied with the outcome. You can search my YouTube channel and see some of the videos I've posted where I've tested the camera in various situations and you can see for yourself whether it will serve your intended purposes. Is there a downside to the camera? Yes, admittedly there is... but it's not the camera's fault. It's the manufacturer's fault in not providing all of the ancillary items that are really necessary to allow a musician to effectively use the camera out of the box... as a matter of fact, it's what's not in the box that is the problem. There's not a cable or a memory card. The only thing that comes with the camera is a set of batteries and the instruction manual. There's not an AC adapter either, which would be very useful if you have to record for longer periods of time. A set of alkaline batteries (2) will only barely record for 2 hours, if that. What I have done to power the unit for longer recording times is use my rechargeable power bank that I use to charge my cell phone battery on the go (I think it's 10,000 mAh) and that seems to be a very serviceable solution. Otherwise, you'll definitely have to buy stock in Eveready or Duracell. In spite of the limitations with regard to battery life, I am totally satisfied with the performance of the Zoom Q2n. One of the things that has made my experience with the camera is the exemplary service from B & H Photo.
