Designed with an MTBF rating of 1 million hours for use in 24/7 always-on environments, the 8TB Deskstar 7200 rpm SATA III 3.5" Internal NAS Drive Kit from HGST features a 8TB storage capacity, a SATA III 6 Gb/s interface, a 128MB cache, a rotational speed of 7200 rpm, and a 3.5" form factor. While this drive is intended for use in NAS and business-critical environments, it is also suitable for general use at home and can store files such as music, movies, photos, documents, and more. Furthermore, Rotational Vibration Safeguard (RVS) helps anticipate drive disturbances and counteracts them, thus improving performance under strenuous conditions.

General Features

Rotational Vibration Safeguard
Rotational Vibration Safeguard has its own vibration sensors placed at the edges of the hard disk and on the edges of the drive's circuit board. If these sensors feel a vibration rippling through the drive, they can feed forward a signal to the actuator that controls the head's position. The actuator them compensates for the disturbance, counteracting it with an equal and opposite force. In this way, the head is able to "ride" the vibration and stay on track.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from No other brand of HDD comes close to HGST for reliability. I regard HGST drives as the highest in quality compared to all else. I am a repeat buyer over many years. HGST drives have never let me down. When I need additional capacity HGST is what I look for. My system is running with 1GB, 2GB, 2GB, 3GB, 4GB, 4GB, 4GB, 6GB and now 8GB added to that all from HGST. Thats over 7 years of long term, reliable usage. In that time, I've also used other brands of HDD's & SSD's, and had failures in each within 3 years. Yes -- my HGST HDD's have proven reliability beyond that of SSD's, which have failed, been bricked with no data rescue possible. For that reason I recommend HGST.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Heads up for pre 2013 Mac Pro users No complaints about the drive. However, I went to install the drive in my mid 2010 Mac Pro and unexpectedly found that the mounting points on the drive do not match with the Mac Pro drive sleds. I had to bridge the mount points with random sheet metal strips and additional screws. I guess with a 7 year old computer I should expect some standards to change, but it came as a surprise for sure.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fast, quiet and HUGE! So far, so good! I bought 4 of these for my Synology DS-415+. They are quiet, fast, and the price was decent for the size. They replaced 4TB HGST drives I had in the NAS that never hiccuped once. I have no doubts that these drives will hold up very well.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing drive amazing price Got a great deal on these and ended up buying 6 of them. Very fast and reliable drives. No issues thus far but I am not expecting issues based upon backblaze's yearly drive report.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Well I was asked so Way too early to review the product B&H, you should send these please review emails 5 years after purchase to be meaningful. The star rating is mostly for packaging and contents so please ignore basically, done as it's compulsory. Function is a long term item here and impossible to rate at this initial time. However I can say, installed and running without a hitch. Well packed in a retail box with 2 plastic shells on either side of the HD which is in the standard anti-static bag. What most impressed me were the 2 little packets of screws that were enclosed. A genuinely nice touch and, for me, very useful.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Slow speeds and poor support - buy another brand. HGST is a Western Digital company. If you have a support issue, you will be put through to the WD call centre in India. The people there did not even know that HGST was a WD brand and kept telling me it was not their product and so could not support it. This was done in broken, barely understandable English. The phone number for their support number is right on the HGST website, but if you call it, it gives you options for G-Tech support and WD drives, but not HGST. On top of all of this, these drives tested extremely poorly in terms of speed, when compared to Seagate drives and other brands. I had mine in a Drobo, and even Drobo were so confused that they went and purchased some of the same drives so they can run lab test. They confirmed: they are slower than any other drive they tested.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good drive in general I bought 7 of these drives to use in two NASs (Synology DS716+II & DS916+). These are fast drives with lots of spaces, but they are not very quite.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Big and Fast Using it in OWC Thunderbay with Mac Pro. Great cost per gigabyte. Using with 4K files with FCPX Camera Archives stored on the drive. It's note noisy either. The bay is on my desk about 2 feet from me. I trust these drives because of their reported reliability as well.
