    Aputure FRESNEL reviews

Fresnel Lens Mount for Light Storm LS120 COB is rated 3.7 out of 5 by 15.
Rated 2 out of 5 by from Doesn't work well on RSP 100 I've got a couple of RSP 100's which are similar to the Aputure fresnel light with their Bowens mount and wanted a way to better control their light output. The build quality of this fresnel lens mount is good, and I can live with a few light leaks. There is no heat problem with my 100 watt units. BUT, these fresnel lens mounts don't really work to focus the light much. Comparing the light with and without the unit, I get about two stops difference. Focusing the unit in and out doesn't change the intensity much at all but does narrow the beam a bit - but not near the amount claimed. Using a simple Bowens reflector along with some black wrap, will give you equal power and more control. If you are used to using professional fresnels (Mole, Arri etc) you will be disappointed.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not As Useful as I Had Hoped This unit is well made out of some plastic compound material that is extremely strong. It accepts 7 grids and barn doors. It can be focused from 40 to 12 degrees. Thus saving a little time switching out grids. However, this unit has one basic design flaw, the vent holes all over the unit let light spill in places you where you don't want it ! Some have suggested using Black Wrap which may do the trick. I tried to solve the problem by inserting some easy to bend and cut sheet material on the inside thinking this would be a more elegant solution. The net outcome was I was never able to cover all the holes internally when the unit was extended to the 12-degree setting, making it pretty much useless for me. Nice idea, not ready for prime time. Although my trial period is long over I'm going to ask B & H for a store credit ...

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Disappointing - Doesn't do what a fresnel lens should do Bought this for use on my 300D, don't own/haven't tried it on the LS 120. I have 20 years in the industry and was a union Hollywood lighting tech for 10 years (I.A.T.S.E. Hollywood Local #728) so am pretty familiar with why we chose fresnel instruments and what they should do - provide an even field (without significant hot spots) across the width of the beam thrown by the light when the instrument is set to "full flood." Fresnels at full flood also tend to have fairly sharp shadow quality (although not as sharp as a more point source instrument such as an open faced tungsten unit at full flood). The instrument does neither. Major hot spot in middle of beam even at full flood and shadow quality is actually sharper with the 300D's detactable reflector (that comes with the unit) than with this fresnel at full flood. I did decide to keep this however as the build quality looks/feels solid and the ability to flood/spot does provide some on-light control of the beam, which could potentially save me some time dragging out and setting up multiple flags and scrims on c-stands. Believe a simple redesign with adding a second lens to the back of the unit that disperses the light more evenly across the fresnel would solve this problem. Hope Aputure will consider implementing this at some point. Am extremely happy with their 300D Light Storm unit.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love how this changes the light! Love the flexibility this modifier adds to the light. I also plan to use it with my photography monolights. I only wish it came with barn doors and grids. From what I understand, any that are designed to fit a 7 reflector will work with it too.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from spills light everywhere! an absolute joke! insulting to for a piece of gear that is priced for professionals! spills light everywhere! Should of at least been built with barn doors designed onto the front instead of another attachment. Honestly if you need a fresnel light this combination does not work

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Performs reasonably well. Easy to attach via Bowens mount. Spot/flood adjustment easy to use. Too many vents causes spill that needs to be managed with blackwrap. Spot/flood quality seems okay.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good, but flawed. Great price but, the silver part surrounding the Fresnel lens causes reflections that messes up sharpness of the light beam, with light reflection spill. I wish they would have that made whole part black, to stop light reflections. Also the vents leak light around the outside, so you have to cover it up with Blackwrap to stop other light spill.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works well, inexpensive solution I use this on the 300D, it fits perfectly without any adapters, contrary to what others say. It's very quick and easy to mount and unmount. The fresnel itself is plastic, so I'm wondering about heat although I've not yet had any issues. For the price I'm very happy with it.
