Epson 12000XL Reviews

Bigger and better!

This scanner is huge, you can't tell from the photo. And so far, I just set it up. I am still learning how to use it. However, after scanning one image, I was blown away by the quality of the scanned images. I have spent 5 months researching the best scanner for artists and when this one was out of stock, I panicked. But BH emailed me when they got them back in stock, so I purchased it right away! No regrets!

We replaced a Microtek scanner with this Expression 12000XL. The quality of the scans we get is superior, and its great to have a 64-bit plug-in for Photoshop as well - something the Microtek didnt have unless you go backward to the WIA driver. The SiverFast software that comes with the scanner is far and away better!

The scanners (2) that we purchased are great. Software works well. Speed of the scans is good. Quality f the scans are excellent. I have zero complaints as of now. I would recommend the scanner highly. We have been in the color separation business for almost fifty years starting with camera and film separations.

I love this scanner- the quality is perfect and color matching really turns out beautiful. I use it to scan in illustrations and drawings and the detail is really good. It is large and heavy so if it's for home use you will need a spot for it- it is too big to sit on my desk with the computer. Highly recommend it.

Scans come out great, even compared to our high-end photo transparency, smaller format Epson scanner, needing little to no correction. Easy to use and pretty fast.

A work horse

I do a lot (1000s) of very large 1200 DPI scans of art. Using a letter size platen each work will take a minimum of 6 scans followed by stitching. The extra size saves hundreds of hours and is well worth the cost.

How many and what types of negative holds does the transparency unit come with?
Asked by: clifford
you get two 35mm slide holders. Each holder can hold 15 slide. you get two 35mm film strip holders. Each holder holds 4 strips of 6. you get two 4x5 film holders. Each one can hold 4 4x5 slides or negatives. you get two medium format film holders that hold three strips each with a max length of 17,2 cm. So per strip there may be 3 images of the format 4,5x6 cm or two images of the formats 6x6 cm, 6x7 cm or 6x8 cm

How fast is it compared to the V850 scanning 35mm ...

How fast is it compared to the V850 scanning 35mm color negative fillm at 2400 dpi?
Asked by: Erick
In terms of actual scan speed they are about equal. But the Epson Expression 12000XL is able to load 2 x 35mm Film Strip Film Holders at the same time, and each holder can hold up to 24 frames which allows it to scan up to 48 frames of 35mm negatives in a single batch. The V850 can only load a single 35mm Strip Film Holder, the holder it comes with only holds up to 18 frames. If batch scanning a lot of film, the Epson Expression 12000XL will be quite a bit faster in terms scan and setup time.

Can each 35mm slide have custom exposure ...

Can each 35mm slide have custom exposure adjustments in a batch scan or do all 30 slides get scanned at the same settings?
Asked by: James R.
I have not personally tried it because I have been scanning primarily old photographs. The slides I have done have been in batches using some basic settings with the Epson software. But you can do this if you use the Silverfast software. The drawback with the Silverfast software is you need to experiment and learn how to use it which takes awhile. I have not found the output through Silverfast to be noticeably better than the Epson software. When I scan either photographs or slides using the Epson scanner and software, it always provides superb images. The Epson software doesn't have all the bells and whistles as Silverfast but I don't consider that a drawback. The simplicity and speed may be a virtue actually. Once I have a digital image, I can do anything with it in LR, PS, or Luminar. And I am much faster on those platforms and can be as finicky was I want while editing. So in that respect, I am very pleased just using the Epson software for batch slide scanning. Here is the description for customizing individual slides from the Silverfast Knowledge page: SilverFast makes it possible to scan multiple images in one step. First, the photos are placed on the glass of the scanner and a prescan is performed. Then, on the tool dock under Frame, select the item Find frames - All frames. If you would prefer to adjust the frame yourself, simply hold the left mouse button down to drag a frame rectangle for each new frame. On the edges, corners, and center points of the edges you can change the size and tilt of the frame. Once SilverFast has found all the frames, the refined settings can be adjusted for each individual frame. To do this, select a frame and zoom into the image. Now the settings and tools can be adjusted in detail. If there are several photos on the platen glass, each frame can be given its own settings, filters, and tools. Once everything is configured for a frame, the scan and subsequent image processing can be started. While that's being done, you can work on other frames. SilverFast scans and processes scans in the background once they've been started. I hope this helps! Cheers! John
